The Black Forest is where Valheim stops being a relaxed crafting sandbox and starts demanding real preparation. Dense pine canopies block the light, Trolls patrol the ridgelines, and the copper and tin buried in those rocky outcrops are the only path to bronze gear. Every player hits this biome eventually, and how well you understand it determines how quickly you progress past it.
What makes the Black Forest different from the Meadows?
The Meadows ease you in. The Black Forest does not. Enemies here attack in groups, hit harder, and can find you before you find them. Greydwarfs swarm in packs and throw rocks from range. Trolls can one-shot an unprepared Viking. Skeletons lurk inside burial chambers waiting to punish anyone who charges in swinging.
The biome's terrain compounds the danger. Uneven ground, steep inclines, and dense undergrowth make it easy to lose your bearings and stumble into a fight you are not ready for. Visibility drops fast under the canopy, especially at night.
What keeps players coming back despite all of that is the reward. Copper and tin ore are locked almost exclusively to this biome, and without them you cannot craft bronze, which gates a significant chunk of the game's early weapon and tool progression.

How to prepare before entering the Black Forest
Showing up with flint gear and no food is a fast way to lose your items. Before crossing into the Black Forest, sort out the following:
- Weapons: Bring a bow with a solid arrow supply. Many Black Forest threats are best thinned at range before they close the gap. Keep a melee weapon for follow-up attacks.
- Armor: Leather armor crafted from Meadows resources gives decent early protection. Troll hide armor, if you have already farmed it, is even better.
- Food: Stack three food items that boost both health and stamina. Cooked meat, mushrooms, and berries cover the basics.
- Tools: A pickaxe is non-negotiable for mining copper and tin. Bring an axe for wood.
- Light: Torches or fire arrows help in low-visibility situations, particularly inside burial chambers.
Setting up a small outpost near the biome's edge before going deep is worth the time. Having a bed and a chest nearby means a death does not cost you a full run back.
Where to find copper and tin ore
Copper deposits appear as large, greenish-tinted boulders embedded in the ground across the Black Forest. They are hard to miss once you know the color. Each deposit yields a significant amount of Copper Ore and takes multiple pickaxe swings to fully clear, so plan for a mining session rather than a quick grab.
Tin Ore comes from smaller gray deposits, usually found along riverbanks and near water sources within the biome. They are faster to mine than copper but also less obvious at a glance.
Both ores are heavy. Bring a cart or plan multiple trips if you are mining a large deposit. Copper especially stacks up fast and will slow you to a crawl if you try to carry too much at once.

How to smelt ore into usable metal
Raw ore does nothing in your inventory until you process it. That requires a Smelter, which you can build using 20 Stones and 5 Surtling Cores, with a Workbench nearby. Surtling Cores drop from Surtlings in Burial Chambers and can also be found in chests scattered through the biome.
Once you have a Smelter running, feed it ore and coal to produce refined metal. Copper smelts into Copper, and Tin smelts into Tin, which you then combine at a forge in a 2:1 ratio to produce Bronze.

Who are the enemies in the Black Forest?
Greydwarfs are the most common threat. They come in three variants: standard Greydwarfs, Greydwarf Brutes, and Greydwarf Shamans. Shamans throw a slowing poison and should be prioritized. Standard Greydwarfs are manageable one-on-one but dangerous in the groups they favor. Bows work well here.
Trolls are the biome's biggest physical threat. They hit for massive damage and can destroy structures if they wander near your base. Hit-and-run tactics work best: bait a swing, step back, fire a few arrows, repeat. Fighting a Troll in melee without good armor is a gamble.
Skeletons appear inside Burial Chambers. They are resistant to slash and pierce damage but take extra damage from blunt weapons. Bring a mace or club specifically for dungeon runs.

How to build a base in the Black Forest
A permanent base in the Black Forest pays off quickly if you are doing serious mining. A few principles that make the difference:
- Pick high ground near ore deposits. Elevation gives you a sightline advantage and cuts travel time to your main mining targets.
- Stone walls over wood walls. Wood structures survive most Greydwarf attacks but Trolls will demolish them. Upgrade to stone as soon as you have the materials.
- Build a Forge inside your base perimeter. Processing ore on-site means you are not hauling refined metal back to a distant main base.
- Fences and stake walls slow enemies down. They will not stop a Troll, but they buy time against Greydwarf raids.
Organize your chests by material type from the start. Once you have multiple ore types, copper ingots, tin ingots, and bronze piling up alongside wood and stone, a disorganized storage setup turns every crafting session into a scavenger hunt.

What is in the Black Forest's Burial Chambers?
Burial Chambers are underground dungeons scattered through the biome. They contain Skeletons, Surtling Cores in chests, and occasionally other crafting materials. The Surtling Cores are the main reason to clear them early, since you need five to build a Smelter.
The layout is linear with branching side rooms. Clear rooms systematically and check every chest. Skeletons respawn if you leave and return, so do not expect a cleared dungeon to stay clear.
Scrap Iron: the other Black Forest metal you need
While copper and tin define the early Black Forest grind, Scrap Iron is the next step. It does not come from the Black Forest itself but from Muddy Scrap Piles inside Sunken Crypts, which are locked dungeons found in the Swamp biome. You need the Swamp Key dropped by the Black Forest boss, The Elder, to access them.
Scrap Iron smelts into Iron using the same Smelter you built for copper and tin. Iron gear represents a significant power jump over bronze, so clearing Swamp Crypts efficiently becomes the next major resource goal after mastering the Black Forest.

Spawn codes and console commands for ore
If you are testing builds, running a private server, or just want to skip the grind on a specific run, every ore in the game has a spawn code. Copper Ore spawns with CopperOre, Tin Ore with TinOre, Scrap Iron with IronScrap, Flametal Ore with FlametalOre, and Black Metal Scrap with BlackMetalScrap. Note that IronOre technically exists as a code but the item itself does not appear in normal gameplay.

The Black Forest is the first real test Valheim throws at you, and getting comfortable here makes every subsequent biome easier to approach.
