Building in Valheim goes far deeper than slapping four walls and a roof together. With over 200 structures across crafting, defense, furniture, and raw construction, the building system rewards players who understand what each piece actually does and why stability matters before the first plank hits the ground.
Every placeable object in Valheim falls under the structures umbrella. That covers everything from a basic Campfire to a Drakkar warship, from a Workbench to a Galdr Table for crafting magic gear. The game organizes them into four broad categories: Misc, Crafting, Building, and Furniture. Each category serves a distinct purpose, and understanding the split helps you prioritize what to build first.

Hammer build menu categories
Equip a Hammer, then right-click to open the build menu. Structures are sorted by category. Select the one you want, and a preview snaps to your crosshair. Rotate it with the scroll wheel, cancel with right-click, or place it with left-click. Holding Left Shift disables snapping if you need freeform placement.
Stability is the mechanic that trips up most new builders. Every piece needs a connection path back to a "Grounded" piece, meaning something physically touching the earth. The further a piece is from a grounded anchor, the more unstable it becomes. You will see pieces shift from green to yellow to red as you extend outward. Red pieces break on placement.
Wood poles and stone pillars are your best tools for extending stability. A Wood Pole 2m or Wood Iron Pole can be stacked to create pillars or driven into water for dock construction. Flametal Pillars and Grausten equivalents serve the same purpose at higher tiers with more structural range.
Repairs cost nothing. Equip the Hammer, right-click to open the build menu, select the repair option, then left-click any highlighted structure to restore it to full durability. You need to be within range of the relevant crafting station for some repairs, so keep your Workbench or Forge accessible.
Crafting structures form the backbone of your progression. Each tier of gear requires a different station, and most stations can be upgraded by placing specific companion pieces nearby.
| Station | Primary Function | Key Upgrade Pieces |
|---|---|---|
| Workbench | Non-metal items, enables building zone | Chopping Block, Tanning Rack, Adze, Tool Shelf |
| Forge | Metal items from bars | Bellows, Anvils, Grinding Wheel, Smith's Anvil, Forge Cooler, Toolrack |
| Black Forge | Advanced metal gear | Vice, Black Forge Cooler, Metal Cutter, Gem Cutter, Smith's Aprons |
| Galdr Table | Magic-based gear | Feathery Wreath, Unfading Candles, Rune Table, Standing Loom |
| Artisan Table | Unlocks Spinning Wheel, Blast Furnace, Windmill | Artisan Press |
| Cauldron | Potions and mead bases | Spice Rack, Butcher's Table, Pots and Pans, Mortar and Pestle, Rolling Pins, Smoker |
The Stonecutter is worth placing early. It sits near your Workbench and unlocks stone construction, which is a significant durability upgrade over wood for permanent base walls.
For processing raw materials, the Smelter handles standard ores with coal as fuel, the Blast Furnace takes over for Black Metal, and the Charcoal Kiln converts wood into coal. The Windmill processes barley into barley flour when wind conditions are right, and the Spinning Wheel converts flax into linen. Late-game additions include the Eitr Refinery for Refined Eitr from Soft Tissue and Sap, and the Frigid Kiln for processing Ice into Liquid Frost.

Valheim's building pieces scale with the biomes you progress through. Wood comes first, then stone, then increasingly exotic materials like Darkwood, Ashwood, Grausten, Black Marble, and Scalewood. Each material tier brings new wall shapes, roof angles, and structural pieces.
Roofs come in three main angles: 26°, 45°, and 67°. The angle affects how steep the pitch is and which wall pieces you need to fill gaps. A 26° roof is shallower and needs Wood Wall 26° pieces to close the triangular gaps at each end. A 45° roof is steeper and needs matching Wood Wall 45° fillers. The 67° option added later creates the most dramatic pitch. Each material tier (Thatch, Shingle, Ashwood, Grausten) has its own matching set of ridge pieces, inner corners, and outer corners for L-shaped or complex builds.
For base protection, the options expand significantly across tiers:
The Ward deserves special mention for multiplayer. It locks doors and chests and prevents other players from building or destroying within its radius, making it the primary griefing deterrent on shared servers.
Beyond standard chests, Valheim has dedicated material storage piles that each hold 50 units of a specific resource. Deconstructing one drops the full stack, making them useful for organized base storage:

Perimeter defense structures
Comfort is a stat that determines how long the Rested buff lasts after sleeping. Higher comfort means more time with the health and stamina regeneration bonus active. Every furniture piece placed in or near your sleeping area contributes to the total.
| Furniture | Comfort Bonus |
|---|---|
| Bed | +1 |
| Dragon Bed / Ashwood Bed | +2 |
| Stool / Bench / Table | +1 |
| Chair / Darkwood Chair / Wood Chair | +2 |
| Raven Throne / Bone Throne / Black Marble Throne / Stone Throne / Antler Throne | +3 |
| Lox Rug / Wolf Rug / Deer Rug / Bearskin Rug / most rugs | +1 |
| Long Heavy Table / Round Table | +2 |
| Hot Tub | +1 |
| Armour Stand | +1 |
| Maypole (found, not crafted) | +1 |
Thrones are the highest single-piece comfort items at +3. Any of the four throne variants works, so build whichever matches your base aesthetic. The Maypole cannot be crafted but spawns in the world. Building around a discovered one is worth the effort for the free comfort point.
Chest capacity scales with materials:
The Personal Chest is the multiplayer-specific option. Only the player who places it can open it, which matters on shared servers.
This category holds everything that does not fit neatly elsewhere. The three vessels form a clear progression: Raft first, then Karve with storage slots, then Longship with more speed and capacity, and finally the Drakkar as the top-tier ship.
Portals deserve early investment. The standard wood Portal links to any other portal sharing the same tag. The Portal - Stone is the upgraded version. Both let you skip long overland travel, and linking one to your main base from each new biome saves enormous time.
The Cartography Table records discovered regions and lets players share map data, which is particularly useful in multiplayer. The Wisp Fountain catches wisps that spawn at night, a requirement for navigating the Mistlands. The Sap Extractor attaches to Mysterious Branches to collect sap passively.
For decoration, the Wolf Adornment and Raven Adornment mount on roofs or walls, and the Archery Target and T.W.I.G. serve as practice dummies for testing damage output before a boss fight.

Building is only one part of Valheim's progression. Once your base is sorted, check the Valheim boss locations and summon requirements guide to plan your next fight, or work through the full achievements list to see what milestones you are missing. If you want to test build configurations without grinding materials, the Valheim console commands guide covers every spawn and god mode command on PC, Xbox, and Mac.
