The locked doors inside the Gates of Morkhalla are one of the sharpest walls Valheim throws at you in the Deep North. You need an Intricate Key to open them, and you will actually need three of them to clear the biome properly. The good news is the crafting chain, while long, follows a clear sequence once you know where to look.
What do you need before you start?
The Intricate Key sits at the end of a multi-step crafting chain that pulls materials from several different Deep North systems. Before you start chasing anything, make sure you have access to all of the following.
How to find the Mould: Intricate Key in the Winding Tunnels
The mould only drops inside the Winding Tunnels, the maze-like dungeon hidden beneath the longhouses of abandoned Deep North villages. Look for the largest multi-story building in any snow-covered settlement, go inside, and drop through the large hole in the floor.

Once underground, you have two ways to get the mould:
- Smash rubble piles. Every pile of wooden debris has a chance to drop a Mould: Intricate Key. Destroy everything you pass.
- Kill Eyeless Ones and Elakings. These are the main enemy types in the tunnels, and both drop the mould at a higher rate than rubble. Clearing them out is faster than hunting through debris alone.
While you are down there, also collect Frostcores, the glowing blue ice formations typically found overhead. Touching your first Frostcore teaches you the Frost Foundry recipe, which you will need later. The Frost Foundry costs 10 Frostcore, 15 iron, and 20 stone to build.

How to get Bloodgold Ingots from Gammeltrolls
Each Intricate Key requires 5 Bloodgold Ingots, and Bloodgold only comes from one source: the Gammeltroll. These are the enormous rock-covered trolls that roam the Deep North surface. You cannot miss them.
Here is the exact sequence:
- Find and kill a Gammeltroll. When it dies, it petrifies into a solid stone statue that cannot be mined with a pickaxe.
- Craft Ember Charges at your base using embers from the Ember Monument (the drop from Ashlands boss Fader) and seal pelts from seals found in the Deep North.
- Throw Ember Charges at the petrified Gammeltroll body to break off chunks. Each broken piece yields Petrified Tissue.
- Smelt the Petrified Tissue in your Blast Furnace with coal to produce Bloodgold Ingots.
For three keys you need 15 Bloodgold Ingots total, so plan to take down multiple Gammeltrolls across your Deep North sessions.
How to build the Frost Foundry and Frigid Kiln
Before you can pour the key, you need two crafting stations set up at your base.
Frost Foundry (10 Frostcore, 15 iron, 20 stone): This is the finishing station where the Cast: Intricate Key gets poured into the finished key. You learn the recipe from your first Frostcore pickup in the Winding Tunnels.
Frigid Kiln (10 Frostcore, 20 stone, 5 ice): This produces the Liquid Frost that fuels the Frost Foundry. To get ice, use a black metal pickaxe on the ice patches in the Deep North. You will know you are standing on ice because your character slides. Picking up your first unit of ice unlocks the Frigid Kiln recipe automatically.
How to craft the Intricate Key
With all materials in hand, the final crafting steps are straightforward.
- Go to your Level 4 Black Forge and combine 1 Mould: Intricate Key with 5 Bloodgold Ingots to produce the Cast: Intricate Key.
- Approach your Frost Foundry and place the Cast: Intricate Key into it.
- Load your Frigid Kiln with ice to generate Liquid Frost, then add the Liquid Frost to the Frost Foundry.
- Wait roughly a minute for the foundry to finish. The Intricate Key will rise from the station and you can collect it by pressing your interaction key.

How to open the Gates of Morkhalla
Morkhalla towers are tall, dark, dilapidated structures that stand above the surrounding pines, easy to spot against the snow. Their entrances are deliberately elevated with no ground-level access.
To get inside:
- Travel to a Morkhalla tower and use your Grappling Hook to reach the raised entry point. A makeshift bridge can get you to the entrance, but you will still need the hook to navigate the dungeon interior.
- Head down the stairs inside to the chained door at the base.
- Interact with the door and select the prompt to use the Intricate Key. The door opens and the Gates of Morkhalla are unlocked.
The key is consumed on use, so each Morkhalla tower costs one key. There is no way around this, which is why collecting three moulds in a single Winding Tunnels run matters so much.
Why does getting inside Morkhalla matter?
The rewards justify every step of the crafting chain. Inside Morkhalla you will encounter Krigen and Hexen, both of which drop loot used for the new armor sets. Krigen also drop Memorial Coal, a material needed for further crafting progression.
More importantly, at the bottom of each Morkhalla tower you will find a Malicious Ice structure. Destroying it triggers a Jotun invasion on the map, and repelling that invasion rewards Malicious Blood. You need three Malicious Blood to open the Aesir Passage and summon Kall Fimbulbringer, the final boss of Valheim 1.0. That is the direct line from crafting your first Intricate Key to finishing the game.
For everything else the Deep North demands, the Valheim biome progression guide covers what to prepare before entering each zone and what to tackle first.
