What is the Inlaid Library in Vampire Survivors?
The Inlaid Library is the second stage in Vampire Survivors, a long horizontal corridor packed with escalating enemy waves, hidden items, and two major boss encounters. Described in-game as the domain of "the Futile Scribe" cursed to know all and understand nothing, it plays very differently from Mad Forest. Enemies funnel in from the left and right sides of the screen in dense vertical crowds, which changes how you position yourself and which weapons actually pull their weight. There are passive items to hunt down, a relic to collect, a coffin to unlock, and a hyper mode to earn by defeating the Hag at the 25-minute mark.

How do you unlock the Inlaid Library?
The standard unlock requires reaching level 20 in Mad Forest. That's the only prerequisite for most players. If you want to skip ahead, the Forbidden Scrolls of Morbane offer an alternative: cast the spell everywhere and the stage unlocks immediately without completing Mad Forest first.
If you're grinding Mad Forest for the level 20 unlock anyway, use that run to pick up strong weapon evolutions. You'll want them ready for the Library's tougher mid-game waves.
Where are all the items on this stage?
The Inlaid Library has a fixed set of items that spawn at the start of every run. Knowing their locations before you drop in saves a lot of aimless wandering.
Passive items
Two passive items always appear at run start, per the Vampire Survivors wiki:
- Empty Tome: spawns west of the starting area. There's a 40% chance of one additional copy, a 30% chance of a second extra, and a 20% chance of a third extra, all depending on your starting Luck stat.
- Stone Mask: spawns east of the starting area. Always exactly one copy.
If you have the Yellow Sign relic, four hidden items also appear:
- Gold Ring and Metaglio Right: east of the starting area
- Silver Ring and Metaglio Left: west of the starting area
Relic and coffin
- Grim Grimoire (relic): located west of the starting area
- Giovanna Grana (coffin): also found in Inlaid Library, unlocking her as a playable character

What enemies appear in each wave?
The Inlaid Library runs for 30 minutes before The Reaper arrives. The enemy roster escalates steadily, with new unit types introduced roughly every few minutes. Here's a breakdown of the major phases, based on the Vampire Survivors wiki's wave data:
Minutes 0 to 5: early pressure
Dust Elementals dominate the opening. At 0:00, a Shade Bomb map event fires immediately, sending Sig.ra Rossi (a fast-moving shade with a high-damage self-destruct attack) directly at you. By minute 2, Musc Musc join the mix alongside a Medusa Wall event that lines up Sneaky Heads from the sides. Minute 3 brings the first Giant Mummy boss and a treasure chest. The minimum enemy count climbs from 50 at the start to 110 by minute 4.
Minutes 6 to 10: density ramps up
Dullahans appear at minute 6, with Shade Bomb events becoming more frequent. By minute 7, Big Musc Musc join in and Shade Bombs have an 80% chance to repeat up to 8 times. Minute 8 introduces Ghosts and the Colossal Musc Musc boss. Minute 9 is one of the nastiest early waves: 200 minimum enemies at a 0.5-second spawn interval. Minute 10 brings the Colossal Lionhead boss and the first evolution-eligible treasure chest.
Minutes 11 to 20: boss parade
This stretch introduces Big Sneaky Heads, Lionheads, Apprentice Witches, Elite Dullahans, and multiple colossal boss variants. The Colossal Sneaky Head arrives at minute 11 alongside an Arcana-holding Glowing Bat (only if Arcanas are enabled). Minute 15 is a standout danger point: Aggressive Big Sneaky Heads with a 100-unit minimum, Queen Medusa as the boss, and a Medusa Swarm event that can repeat up to 25 times at 90% chance every 2 seconds.
Minute 18 drops the Master Witch boss. Minute 20 is the first major milestone: Nesuferit spawns, the treasure chest can evolve up to 3 weapons simultaneously (if you get a higher-tier chest), and a Skull Swarm event escalates from 1 to 32 Skullones over the course of the minute.
Minutes 21 to 25: endgame push
Undead Sassy Witches appear at minute 22, paired with Lionheads and recurring Shade Bomb events. Minute 23 brings the Colossal Lionhead again alongside Elite Dullahans and Undead Sassy Witches at a brutal 0.1-second spawn interval. Minute 24 throws 300 Undead Sassy Witches at you. Minute 25 is the final boss encounter: the Hag spawns, accompanied by a Bat Swarm of 50 bats and an escalating Skull Swarm sequence that mirrors the minute 20 event. Defeating the Hag unlocks hyper mode for this stage.
Minutes 26 to 29: post-Hag chaos
After the Hag, Giant Medusas and Queen Medusas take over. Minute 27 hits 300 minimum enemies at 0.1-second intervals with Fast Big Sneaky Heads in Medusa Wall formations. Minute 28 adds Colossal Sneaky Heads to the regular enemy pool. Minute 29 is the final gauntlet: Colossal Dust Elemental, Colossal Musc Musc, Colossal Lionhead, and Colossal Sneaky Head all spawn simultaneously, with Shade Bombs repeating up to 50 times at 60% chance every second.
Minute 30 and beyond
At 30:00, all enemies on screen are cleared and The Reaper arrives. Every additional minute past 30 spawns another Reaper. There is no surviving this indefinitely.
How do you unlock hyper mode?
Beat the Hag at the 25-minute mark in normal mode. Once unlocked, hyper mode for Inlaid Library gives +50% Gold and +10% Luck bonuses. The Luck bonus is particularly useful here because it increases the chances of additional Empty Tome copies spawning, which compounds your cooldown reduction significantly.
What's the best strategy for surviving Inlaid Library?
The corridor layout is the defining factor. Enemies always approach from the left and right, so weapons with strong horizontal or wide-area coverage outperform those with directional or narrow hitboxes.
- Prioritize area-of-effect weapons early. The Shade Bomb events at minutes 0, 6, 7, and 10 send fast suicide-attackers directly at you, and a weapon that covers all directions handles them better than a targeted one.
- Grab the Empty Tome west of spawn as soon as possible. Cooldown reduction applies to every weapon you carry, making it one of the highest-value passive items on any stage.
- The Stone Mask east of spawn boosts Gold income, which feeds into shop purchases and overall progression. Pick it up on your first eastward sweep.
- Plan your evolutions around the minute 10 chest. That's the first chest in the run that can award an evolution, so having a weapon at max level with its passive item ready means you can evolve immediately instead of waiting.
- At minute 15, stay mobile. The Queen Medusa boss combined with a near-continuous Medusa Swarm event makes standing still fatal. Keep moving along the corridor.
The Grim Grimoire relic (west of start) unlocks Arcanas in future runs. Collecting it on your first Inlaid Library run means subsequent attempts can benefit from Arcana cards, including ones that dramatically change how weapons scale.

Trivia worth knowing
The Inlaid Library's name is a reference to the Long Library from Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, according to the Vampire Survivors wiki. The original pre-1.0 description was far less ominous: it described the stage as a quiet place to rest, meditate, and "forage for roast chicken." There's also a quirk in the stage geometry: clipping through the top or bottom walls and walking far enough puts you in a duplicate hallway that spawns no enemies at all.
