How Vampire Crawlers Keeps the Soul of ...

Dying early in Vampire Crawlers is almost a rite of passage. The game throws you into first-person dungeon crawling without making it obvious how to recover HP between fights, and a few bad encounters can end a run before it ever gets interesting. There are four distinct ways to restore health, and knowing all of them, plus when to prioritize each one, makes a real difference in how far your runs go.

How do you heal in Vampire Crawlers?

According to IGN's wiki guide (updated April 22, 2026), there are exactly four healing methods available in Vampire Crawlers:

  • Picking up floor chickens from broken torches
  • Unlocking and upgrading the Recovery power up in the Village
  • Using Pummarola cards after battles
  • Equipping Bloody Tear, the evolved form of the Whip

Each method works differently and becomes available at different points in your progression. Here's a breakdown of all of them.

Floor chickens: the earliest healing option

Floor chickens are the first healing source most players encounter, and they require zero unlocks or coins. As you move through a dungeon floor, look for torches along the sides of the path. Running into a torch breaks it, giving you some gold and occasionally dropping a floor chicken. Picking one up restores 10 HP.

The catch is that floor chickens are random drops. You might clear an entire floor without seeing one, so you cannot plan around them. What you can do is leave one on the ground if you find it early and still have decent health, then come back to grab it when you actually need the recovery.

How does the Recovery power up work?

The Recovery power up is a permanent unlock available in the Village Power Ups Shop, which opens once you have collected 250 coins total. Unlike floor chickens, Recovery heals you automatically after every single battle, making it a passive safety net across an entire run.

It upgrades three times, each level requiring more coins:

The IGN guide specifically recommends unlocking Recovery first, before other power ups, because the consistent post-battle healing extends dungeon runs significantly. Even 1 HP per fight adds up fast across a multi-floor dungeon.

What are Pummarola cards and how do you unlock them?

Pummarola is a card type that heals you after each battle, with the amount scaling based on the card's level. Getting access to it requires a specific progression path:

  1. Defeat the Mantichana in the Mad Forest.
  2. Buy Gennaro Belpaese from the Inn for 500 coins.
  3. Reach Level 10 with Gennaro Belpaese to unlock Pummarola.

Once you start using Pummarola cards regularly, there is a bonus milestone to chase: use Pummarola cards 10 times total and you unlock the Restore Health Gem. This gem heals you after a battle whenever it is slotted into a card, adding another layer of passive recovery to your deck.

How do you unlock Bloody Tear?

Bloody Tear is the most powerful healing option in the game, but it takes real setup to reach. It is an evolved card that requires both the Whip and Hollow Heart cards in your deck simultaneously. When you find an Evolution statue during a run while carrying both cards, you can evolve them into Bloody Tear.

Bloody Tear does two things at once: it hits multiple enemies in a single attack, and it heals you each time you land a critical hit with it. That combination means a well-built deck that triggers frequent critical hits can sustain HP through aggressive play rather than passive recovery.

For more detail on how evolutions work across the full card roster, the evolution and union mechanics are worth studying before you commit to a build.

Which healing method should you prioritize?

The honest answer depends on where you are in your progression. Early on, before you have unlocked anything, floor chickens are your only option, so learn the torch locations and pay attention to where you leave uneaten chickens.

The moment you hit 250 coins and unlock the Power Ups Shop, buy Recovery at Level 1 immediately. The 500-coin cost is worth it before almost anything else in the shop. From there, work toward Gennaro Belpaese and Pummarola for stacking post-battle heals, and keep an eye on Evolution statues once your deck contains both Whip and Hollow Heart.

Vampire Crawlers launched on April 21, 2026 across Xbox Series X/S, PC, Nintendo Switch, and PS5, and is available on Game Pass. The healing systems are part of a broader roguelite progression loop that Poncle built around the card-ascending combo mechanic, where playing cards in order of increasing mana cost multiplies their effects. Sustaining HP long enough to build those chains is what separates short runs from the ones where everything clicks.
