The Possum Trait in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 DMZ does something no other Trait pulls off: it lets your Operator claw back from a full death. Not a down, not a near-miss. A kill. That one mechanic changes how you approach PvP encounters on both sides of the fight, whether you're the one hitting the floor or the one standing over a body wondering why it hasn't despawned yet.

How to unlock Possum in MW4 DMZ

Postsum sits in the Warfighter Trait category and becomes available as your ninth Trait overall. You unlock it by progressing your Operator's Dog Tags through normal DMZ play. There's no shortcut here: earn Trait progression by running deployments, completing objectives, and surviving long enough to bank XP.

Once the ninth slot opens, equip Possum as your active Warfighter Trait before you deploy. The Trait does nothing if it isn't slotted before the match begins.

How does the Possum Trait work?

Possum activates after your Operator has been fully killed, not just downed. The moment you die, you have the option to hold Square on PlayStation or X on Xbox to trigger a self-revive back into Last Stand.

From Last Stand, you either use a tourniquet to get back up or wait for a teammate to assist. The key detail: Possum can still fire even if you've already burned through all your tourniquets. The Trait puts you back in Last Stand regardless, so a teammate revive remains possible.

The catch is that Possum is a once-per-match ability. Use it, and it's gone for the rest of that deployment.

What you lose when you die

The Trait brings you back, but it doesn't restore your loadout. Any enemy standing near your body when you died can loot your Armor Vest, weapons, and valuables before you have a chance to revive. By the time you're back in Last Stand, you could be looking at an empty kit.

Timing matters. Activating Possum while enemies are still looting your body is almost always a bad idea.

How to use Possum effectively

The Trait rewards patience more than reflex. Here's how to get real value from it:

  • Wait for the area to clear. Let enemies loot and move on before activating. A few extra seconds dramatically improves your odds of surviving the revive.
  • Coordinate with your squad. If teammates are alive and nearby, communicate before you activate so they can cover you during the Last Stand window.
  • Accept the gear loss. Your weapons and armor are probably gone. Focus on surviving the revive first, then reequip from the environment.
  • Use it to preserve your Dog Tags. The biggest benefit isn't winning the fight you just lost. It's staying in the deployment and keeping your Operator's progression intact.

How to counter Possum players in MW4 DMZ

Killing an enemy Operator is no longer a guaranteed end to the encounter. If they're running Possum, the fight isn't over until you've confirmed the kill or waited out the window.

Counter MethodWhat It DoesReliability
Loot their weapons and armorStrips them of combat capability before reviveHigh
Place a mine near the bodyKills them when they enter Last StandHigh
Wait in ambush nearbyCatches them during the vulnerable revive animationMedium
Ping the bodyChecks whether the game still registers them as aliveMedium
Watch for circling birdsAbsence of birds can signal a fakeout deathLow

Step-by-step: confirming a Possum kill

  1. Down and finish the enemy Operator.
  2. Immediately loot their weapons and armor vest to reduce their post-revive threat.
  3. Drop a mine directly on or next to the body.
  4. Move out of their line of sight but stay within 50 meters.
  5. Wait approximately two minutes. If they activate Possum, the mine handles it. If they don't, they were never running the Trait.
  6. Ping the body if you're unsure. A body the game still considers alive will respond differently to a ping than a confirmed dead Operator.

Is Possum worth equipping?

For players who regularly push PvP, Possum offers genuine value. One extra life per deployment can be the difference between extracting with your Dog Tags and losing your Operator's progression entirely.

The limitations are real, though. You won't recover your gear automatically, enemies who know the Trait exists will mine your body on instinct, and the once-per-match restriction means you can't build a playstyle around it. Possum works best as a safety net for aggressive players who know they're going to take fights and want one opportunity to correct a bad outcome.

If you're still building toward the ninth Trait slot, the full DMZ Operator Traits breakdown covers every option across all three categories so you can plan the most efficient path to Possum and beyond.

What else to know before deploying

Possum is one piece of a larger DMZ system. Knowing the Trait is only useful if you understand the broader match structure around it. Bosses on the map can kill you before Possum even becomes relevant, and knowing every Commander and Lieutenant spawn location lets you avoid or plan for those encounters rather than burning your one Possum activation on an AI fight.
