Where is the Excalibur altar in Notre-Dame?

Excalibur is sitting in a stone altar in Notre-Dame's Chapel, and every player who walks past it gets the same frustrating result: the sword does not move. The game gives you a clue, you leave, and then you forget about it for three hours. Here's the short answer — you need Fist of Talos equipped as your Arcana spell before the altar does anything useful. Once you have it, the whole sequence takes about five minutes.

Where is the Excalibur altar in Notre-Dame?

The sword sits on the central stone altar inside the Chapel, surrounded by stained-glass windows. You enter the Chapel from the East Gallery on the left side of Notre-Dame. The altar is marked on the in-game map once you are inside the room.

On your first visit, pressing INTERACT (R1 on PlayStation, E on PC) at the sword adds a new entry to your Tarot menu: a Feat of Strength clue titled NEW CLUE ABOUT THE BRITTLE KING. The blade stays put. The clue's references to a titan and a colossus point directly toward Talos, which is the game nudging you toward The Builder Arcana.

For context on when this fits into the broader story, the Sage Seal located in Notre-Dame's East Gallery (Seal 3) is in the same area, and the Brittle King Arcana is obtained here as part of the same sequence. If you are following the path to the true ending after beating Dracula, this is one of the stops you need to make. You can find the full sequence of Sage Seal locations and other collectibles covered in the Castlevania: Belmont's Curse strategy guides collection.

How do you get Fist of Talos?

Fist of Talos is the spell granted by The Builder Arcana, which you earn by defeating Talos in the Clock Tower. After the boss fight, a chest in the Builder's Bureau contains the Fists of Talos weapon, and The Builder Arcana card unlocks the spell.

The steps in order:

  1. Defeat Talos in the Clock Tower to receive The Builder Arcana.
  2. Open the Builder's Bureau chest for the Fists of Talos weapon.
  3. Equip Fist of Talos as your active Arcana spell.
  4. Travel to Notre-Dame's Chapel.

The mistake most players make is assuming any Arcana equipped will work. Only Fist of Talos triggers the resonance at the altar. Swapping to a different spell after equipping it and before interacting with the altar will break the sequence.

How to draw Excalibur and trigger the Arthur fight

With Fist of Talos equipped, stand at the sword altar and press INTERACT (R1, E on PC). The first attempt fails with a flare of light around the blade. Keep pressing INTERACT. On a subsequent attempt, a cutscene begins.

The Brittle King appears and says: "Strength is not enough to draw Excalibur. One must also be strong of heart and mind." He then turns hostile and the fight starts. The boss health bar reads Arthur, while the cutscene introduction names him The Brittle King — both names refer to the same enemy.

How to beat Arthur (The Brittle King)

Arthur rises from glass fragments as a giant stained-glass knight carrying a crested shield. He has 11,000 health and seven distinct attack types. Two of them shape the entire fight.

Ground wave

Watch for Arthur crouching with his sword and shield held low. That posture signals a shard wave rolling across the floor. Move back to create distance, then jump over the wave as it travels toward you. Trying to slide through it does not work — crystal shards cannot be crossed with a slide.

Light beams

When Arthur rises off the ground and hoists his shield overhead, he is charging his light beam attack. A vertical pillar of light surrounds him, with beams radiating outward at fixed angles as his sword comes down. Stay grounded directly beneath him and strike his lower body from the gaps between beams. When a beam sweeps toward your position, dash into an open gap rather than away from him entirely.

In some phases, Arthur holds this beam posture without breaking it. Staying under him between the beams lets you deal consistent damage, and your Arcana spells connect from this position as well.

Arthur's full attack list and damage values

AttackDamage (approx. 85 DEF)
High sword strike55
Low sword strike55
Jumping slam (airborne)44
Jumping slam (landing)55
Light rays55
Crystal shards28
Shield drumVariable

Light rays begin at 80% health, then add new levels at 55% and 30%. The shield drum and constant ray phase both start at 50% health. Arthur has 500 XP on offer and is immune to freeze, petrify, bleed, burn, and the slow from Chronomantic Dive. Chains of Justice works on him.

Defense matters here more than many players expect. Rose gains 1 DEF per level and per DEF UP book read. At 20 DEF below the 85 benchmark, incoming damage is roughly 1.7 times higher. Going 20 DEF above it only reduces damage by about 10%, so stacking extra DEF past a reasonable threshold has diminishing returns.

What do you get for beating Arthur?

After the fight ends, Arthur pledges to serve you. Both rewards arrive together in the same cutscene.

Charge attackHold and release Square (PC: left mouse button) — Blade Dive
Arcana cardThe Brittle King (spell: Stained-Glass Shield)

Excalibur's in-game description reads: "The sword of the true king. Shoots projectiles of pure light when used to attack." Its flavour text adds: "The fabled sword of legend, only the most worthy may wield its power and might." Use the HOLD TO EQUIP prompt to add it to Rose's loadout.

The unlock is confirmed when the Arthur boss bar empties, the reward cutscene plays, and both Excalibur and The Brittle King Arcana card appear in your inventory. Defeating Arthur also pops the trophy "I am Arthur, King of the Britons".

Where does the Brittle King fight fit in the true ending path?

Beating Dracula gives you the normal ending. The true ending requires additional steps, and the Brittle King is one of the Arcana you need to complete. The four Sage Seals must also be destroyed to free the Sage from the mirror, with Seal 3 located in Notre-Dame's East Gallery — the same area where the Arthur fight takes place.

The sequence in brief:

  • Sage Seal 1: Clock Tower (Mechanic's Ascent)
  • Sage Seal 2: Main Hall
  • Sage Seal 3: Notre-Dame (East Gallery) — same visit as the Brittle King fight
  • Sage Seal 4: Paris Streets (Prison Tower)

The Judge Arcana is collected in Paris Streets before heading to Notre-Dame, and it does not require your Heart Fragments to be maxed out to obtain. After all four seals are destroyed, return to the Main Hall to free the Sage.

If you are working through Notre-Dame specifically, the Notre-Dame Piano Puzzle solution guide covers the Zodiac Organ puzzle in the same location, which rewards the legendary War & Famine dual swords.

Common mistakes

  • Wrong spell equipped: Fist of Talos must be your active Arcana spell. Having The Builder Arcana unlocked is not enough.
  • Visiting too early: The altar gives a clue on the first visit but cannot be activated until Fist of Talos is in your loadout. Many players try to force it before completing the Clock Tower.
  • Sliding into beams: Both light rays and crystal shards block slides. Players who rely on slide-dodging will take full damage.
  • Ignoring DEF: Arthur's damage output scales hard against low DEF. At 20 below the 85 benchmark, you are taking 1.7 times the listed damage values.

FAQ

Can I get Excalibur before beating Dracula? Yes. The only requirement is having Fist of Talos equipped, which comes from defeating Talos in the Clock Tower. This can happen before the Dracula fight.

Does Fist of Talos need to be the equipped weapon, or just the spell? Just the spell. Equip it as your active Arcana spell. The weapon itself does not need to be in your hand.

What happens if I interact with the altar without Fist of Talos? On your first visit you receive the Feat of Strength clue. On subsequent visits without the correct spell equipped, the sword stays in place with no additional interaction.

Is Excalibur worth using after you get it? ATK 100 is strong, and the light projectiles it fires on every attack add meaningful range to Rose's offense. For players who prefer a greatsword style, it holds up well. Check the Castlevania: Belmont's Curse all weapon locations guide to compare it against the rest of the legendary tier.
