Use the Lunatic Warlock leveling build in Diablo IV to reach level 70 with Command Fallen explosions, Bombardment, and Legion Shard. Your demons supply damage and protection while you build toward the Mega Lunatic upgrade at level 14.

Lunatic ranks below the strongest fresh-start options in Season 15: Hell's Legacy, but it offers straightforward combat and steady power growth. Its main limitations are mobility, area coverage, and setup time. The priorities below cover skill milestones, resource management, equipment, and the move into Torment 1.

Which Warlock leveling build should you choose?

Dread Claws is the highest-ranked Warlock leveling option in Season 15, followed by Apocalypse and Minion within A tier. Lunatic sits in B tier. These rankings judge a fresh seasonal character reaching level 70 without previously unlocked aspects, tempers, or stored resources.

BuildLeveling tierMain appealMain trade-off
Dread ClawsADread Claws handles groups, while Hellion Sting supplies single-target damagePositioning matters, with middling defenses and mobility
ApocalypseAA higher-ranked alternative for a fresh seasonal startRequires its own skill progression and equipment plan
MinionAStrong survivability and damage supplied by summoned demonsRequires setup, two-resource management, and repeated casting for maximum damage
LunaticBCommand Fallen explosions, simple combat, and steady scalingMiddling mobility and area coverage, with better results after setup

Choose Dread Claws if your priority is the strongest leveling recommendation. Choose Lunatic if you want an explosive demon-summoning build with clear upgrades to work toward. B tier still gets you to level 70; it simply gives up some efficiency against the leading options.

Returning players comparing their previous class choices can use the Diablo IV Season 14 class and build tier list for that season's context. This Lunatic progression targets Season 15.

How do Wrath, Dominance, and Legion Shard work?

Warlock uses two resource pools. Wrath, shown in pink, pays for most spells, including Core skills. Dominance, shown in purple, primarily pays for Greater Demon skills and regenerates slowly by default. If you're new to action RPG games, watching both halves of the resource bubble is the first habit to build.

Command Fallen generates Wrath. Its level 9 Dominance upgrade also helps replenish your second resource, while Lesser Demon Wrath at level 12 lets Lesser Demon skills generate resources, including your Bombardment casts. Those upgrades keep the build moving instead of leaving you waiting on regeneration.

Which Soul Shard and Fragment should you choose?

Unlock Legion Shard at level 15 to gain Summon Ae'grom. Ae'grom brings a small demon army that protects you and supports the build's summon-focused damage loop. Cast it whenever its cooldown finishes.

Fragments become available at level 30. Sacrificial Fragment provides Unstoppable while you have active Lesser Demons, sacrificing one when you would become Crowd Controlled. Keep that condition in mind: the protection depends on having demons available.

Which skills should you prioritize while leveling?

Lunatic's biggest early breakpoint is Command Fallen Mega Lunatic at level 14. Before that, Bombardment does much of your group-clearing work. Follow these milestones as the relevant branches and variants become available.

Early progression through level 14

LevelSkill or upgradeWhat you gain
StartCommand FallenWrath generation and the foundation of your later damage
3BombardmentYour early Core skill for attacking groups
4Nether StepTeleportation for faster movement
8RampageA strong area attack that spends Dominance
9Command Fallen's Dominance upgradeMore fuel for Dominance-spending skills
12Lesser Demon WrathResource generation through Lesser Demon skills, including Bombardment
13Sigil of SummonsMore demons, stronger Lesser Demons, and longer demon durations
14Command Fallen Mega LunaticThe explosive variant that defines the build

Use Nether Step regularly while traveling between fights. Its base version is sufficient for this setup, so you can leave its variant unselected later.

Progression through level 38

LevelPriorityHow it changes your combat
15Legion Shard and Summon Ae'gromAdds a protective demon army
17Rampage Elite EviscerateApplies Eviscerate to elites in the area on the first hit
22Terror SwarmProvides temporary help against elites and bosses
25Metamorphosis Destruction DemonReplaces Terror Swarm, adding damage, life, and resource cost reduction
30Sacrificial FragmentGives Unstoppable while Lesser Demons remain active
38Summon HellwyrmMimics Command Fallen and Bombardment casts

Metamorphosis Destruction Demon avoids the self-burn penalty in this build. Around the level 38 setup, add Tortured Wretch Punching Bag for a shield in difficult fights and switch Rampage to Demonic Smash for better movement.

What should you do after level 38?

Once Summon Hellwyrm joins the setup, most of the build's defining interactions are available. Its copied Command Fallen and Bombardment casts add damage and help build kill counts faster. Spend subsequent points filling ranks in your primary damage abilities, then invest remaining points in utility.

What's the Lunatic combat rotation?

Lunatic works best when its summons are established before you rely on repeated Command Fallen and Bombardment casts. Use this priority rather than treating every fight as a rigid sequence:

  • Engage groups with Rampage. Elite Eviscerate applies its effect to nearby elites on the first hit once that upgrade is available.
  • Cast Sigil of Summons and Summon Ae'grom. Keep your demon support active, using Ae'grom whenever its cooldown finishes.
  • Attack with Command Fallen and Bombardment. Command Fallen builds resources and supplies Mega Lunatic damage; Bombardment helps secure kills that feed summon interactions.
  • Use Metamorphosis for tougher fights. Its damage, extra life, and reduced resource costs help against elites and bosses.
  • Use Nether Step to move, and Tortured Wretch when you need a shield. Demonic Smash adds another movement option later.

If you're struggling with the pace before level 14, lean on Bombardment for groups. Mega Lunatic and the level 15 Legion unlock arrive close together, so the opening stretch does not represent the finished build.

Which gear, aspects, and Uniques should you keep?

Other build-defining finds include Spine of Tathamet for Hell Fracture, Anathema of the Primes for Tyrant's Grasp, and Hands of the Worldbreaker for Apocalypse.

Upgrade weapon damage first

Your weapon's damage forms the base for later damage calculations, making weapon upgrades the first equipment priority. Press Shift to compare items. Willpower is Warlock's primary attribute and scales its damage.

Temper useful bonuses onto leveling equipment rather than waiting for perfect manuals:

  • Damage bonuses: Damage, Damage to Close, or Vulnerable Damage, provided you meet their conditions.
  • Defensive bonuses: Life, Armor, or Resistances to address survivability gaps.

Put your strongest offensive aspect on an amulet when practical. You generally replace it less frequently than your weapon, helping the imprint last longer.

Which Legendary Aspects are useful?

Watch for Moonrise, Hellbent Commander, Aggressive, Edgemaster's, Crushing, Fortress, Malevolence, Accursed Touch, and Impetus. Salvaging items with Legendary powers adds those powers to the Codex of Power, letting you imprint them onto Rare or Legendary equipment at the Occultist.

When gambling for equipment, choose slots that match the type of power you need:

Power categoryEquipment to gamble
OffensiveGloves
DefensiveChest armor or pants
Utility or mobilityBoots
ResourceRings

Which Unique drops matter?

Useful Lunatic Uniques include Cage of Madness, Paingorger's Gauntlets, Dirge of Odium, and Seed of Horazon. Treat these as welcome upgrades rather than prerequisites for beginning the build.

Some drops open a different direction. Litany of Sable enables a Dread Claws endgame setup, covered in the Diablo IV Season 13 Dread Claws Warlock build guide.

Which Splinters, runes, and mercenaries should you use?

Season 15 Splinters

Splinters are seasonal jewelry socketables with a benefit and a drawback. Higher rarity improves the benefit while leaving the drawback unchanged.

SplinterBenefitCostLeveling recommendation
Splinter of HellfireGuaranteed damage increasePrevents Critical StrikesUseful if you stop prioritizing Critical Strike affixes
Splinter of the Black SoulstoneDamage scaling while killing monstersSlightly increases damage takenA useful option while clearing groups
Splinter of PainAdditional damage reductionReduces movement speedAvoid while prioritizing leveling speed

Check each Splinter's drawback

You can equip up to two Runewords, each combining one Ritual Rune with one Invocation Rune. Prefer armor sockets because weapon gems provide powerful multiplicative damage bonuses.

  • Cir + Ceh: Summons wolves that damage and freeze enemies.
  • Cem + Qua: Gives a movement speed buff when you evade.

For your mercenaries, hire Varyana during solo play for healing through Taste of Flesh and Attack Speed through Hysteria. Use Aldkin as reinforcement for Field of Languish, which improves survivability and slows enemies. Mercenaries unlock during the Vessel of Hatred campaign.

What's the fastest leveling route to 70?

The original campaign is the slowest leveling route, while Vessel of Hatred offers a faster story progression.

Complete Lord of Hatred if you haven't already

The Lord of Hatred campaign unlocks War Plans and the full campaign skip for later characters. Stay on Normal for a faster campaign run.

For a seasonal character with campaign access handled, start the Seasonal Questline when available. It advances Season Rank and its associated rewards while you level.

Prioritize activity progress and fast clears

Treat Hard as your starting point for seasonal leveling. Raise the difficulty after meaningful upgrades, such as Mega Lunatic, Legion Shard, or a strong Legendary drop, but keep enemies dying quickly.

Use War Plans activities throughout levels 1 to 70, focusing on Helltides, the Pit, and Kurast Undercity objectives as available. Infernal Hordes and Nightmare Dungeons are additional options. In Helltides, complete overlapping Whisper objectives to collect experience and equipment alongside other rewards.

Clear Strongholds around level 60 for their significant experience rewards. Spend gold and materials on useful tempers and imprints during leveling, particularly on an alt with those options already unlocked.

How do you move into Torment 1?

As you approach level 70, higher item power equipment creates another opportunity to improve damage and defenses. Replace outdated pieces, then refresh their tempers and imprints before pushing harder content.

At level 70, Paragon progression unlocks. Complete Pit Tier 10 to enter Torment 1, then develop the endgame version of Lunatic or move into another build supported by your drops.

For the Lunatic starter setup, level Glyphs in this order:

  1. Demonologist
  2. Vanguard
  3. Death Aura
  4. Eldritch Sight
  5. Eliminator

Rank Glyphs through the Pit. Their radius starts at 3 and expands to 5 at Glyph level 50, so check board order and rotation as you progress. Season 15 balance can change with later updates; for this leveling plan, the immediate goal remains level 70, refreshed equipment, and a Pit Tier 10 clear.
