EA Sports FC 27 Clubs gives your Virtual Pro a proper progression system built around four interlocking pieces: Archetypes, Archetype XP (AXP), Masteries, and Amps. The mistake most players make is treating them as one system when they're actually four separate layers with different rules, different durations, and very different consequences for getting them wrong. Here's the short answer: AXP and Masteries are permanent, Amps are temporary, and you can rebuild your attribute points for free at any time.

What are Archetypes and how do you choose one?

All 13 Archetypes are unlocked from the moment you start. There's no paywall, no grind to unlock roles. Finisher suits a striker, Spark works for a winger, Creator fits an attacking midfielder, Recycler covers a defensive midfielder, Boss handles a centre-back, Marauder works for a full-back, and Shot Stopper covers the goalkeeper position. Sweeper Keeper, Progressor, Disruptor, Maestro, Magician, and Target round out the full roster.

These aren't fixed best-in-slot choices. A striker who wins aerial duels needs different attribute priorities than one who runs channels. A centre-back who starts attacks from the back might find Progressor more useful than stacking physical stats. The freely adjustable attribute points exist precisely so you can shift priorities as your Club's lineup evolves.

How do you switch Archetypes without spending coins?

You can switch roles and redistribute individual Attribute Points at no cost. No Grounds Coins, no reset consumable. The key is knowing where to do it depending on your current lobby.

  • League match lobby: return to the bench before editing, then navigate to Player Management > Archetypes
  • Rush or Drop-In lobby: open the Archetypes tab directly

Change one attribute at a time rather than rebuilding everything at once. That way you can track what's actually affecting your performance.

How does AXP work?

Archetype XP (AXP) is earned through matches and Objectives in The Grounds. Some consumables grant Instant AXP or apply a multiplier. The amount varies by activity, so there's no single guaranteed number per match.

Instant AXP always goes to your currently active Archetype when you use the item. Each AXP consumable also carries its own level cap, which is separate from your Archetype's overall progression ceiling. An item might cap at level 25 without that meaning your Archetype stops growing at 25.

What are Masteries and why should you level a second Archetype?

Masteries are permanent milestone bonuses that apply across every build once unlocked. Reaching level 10 in Finisher, for example, grants +1 Finishing and +1 Composure to every single Archetype you play. That means leveling a second role you rarely use can still improve your main build over time.

Here's the full Mastery table so you can plan which secondary Archetype is worth the investment:

ArchetypeMastery attributes
Shot StopperGK Positioning, GK Reflexes
Sweeper KeeperGK Handling, GK Diving
ProgressorLong Passing, Standing Tackle
BossAggression, Strength
MarauderSliding Tackle, Sprint Speed
DisruptorStamina, Interceptions
RecyclerDefensive Awareness, Short Passing
MaestroReactions, Ball Control
CreatorFree Kick Accuracy, Vision
SparkCrossing, Dribbling
MagicianCurve, Acceleration
FinisherComposure, Finishing
TargetBalance, Jumping

If your main role is Spark and you want more stamina for extended pressing, grinding Disruptor to its Mastery milestone gives you that bonus permanently. The Mastery system rewards patience.

How do Amps work and how do you avoid wasting them?

Amps are temporary boosts that last for a set number of eligible matches. You can equip up to three at once: two Standard slots and one Signature slot.

  • Standard Tier 1 and Tier 2: attribute boosts for a limited number of matches
  • Signature Tier 3 and Tier 4: can combine attribute boosts with PlayStyles, perks, and Archetype Affinity bonuses

What is Archetype Affinity and does it matter?

Some Amps carry an Archetype Affinity tag, meaning they're tied to a specific role. Equipping an Affinity Amp on its matching Archetype gives you a bonus on top of the standard boost. The Magician Affinity example from EA's notes adds Sprint Speed as that extra. On a different Archetype, the Amp still applies its base benefits but the Affinity bonus disappears.

One more thing to check before equipping: the attribute cap warning. An Amp can't push a stat past its maximum, and a partially wasted boost can still consume a match use. Read the item card before committing.

How do you equip an Amp?

  1. Open the Archetypes menu
  2. Select the Amps tab
  3. Choose an empty Standard or Signature slot
  4. Pick an Amp from your inventory
  5. Check remaining uses and any cap warnings
  6. Confirm the equip

How do you save Amp uses?

The mistake most players make here is closing a match early thinking they'll save a charge. An intentional disconnect still consumes one use. If your opponent disconnects, your Amp is preserved.

To bank remaining uses, go to Archetypes > Amps > Amp Slot > Unequip. The item returns to your inventory with its leftover uses intact. Kickabouts are the other safe option: Amps are disabled in Kickabouts and no uses are spent, so they're not the place to test whether your boost is working.

Where do Amps come from?

EA lists four sources: the Store (purchasable with Coins or FC Points), Objectives, live game modes, and Featured Bundles. Prices, availability, and purchase limits change during the season, so check the current offer before committing. Items in The Grounds can't be sold or traded after purchase.

Check your inventory before buying. Objectives and gameplay rewards can also drop Amps and consumables, so you may already have what you need.

Club Objectives and competition structure

Your individual progression runs alongside shared Club goals. The three objective types are:

  • Club Milestones: long-term Bronze, Silver, and Gold targets that build club reputation and earn fans
  • Club Weeklies and Seasonals: time-limited shared goals rewarding Amps, consumables, and Coins
  • Elite Objectives: additional goals unlocked for clubs in Elite Division

League wins and draws earn promotion points; losses push toward demotion. The season feeds into Playoffs, which carry the bigger reward pools. Club Tournaments add separate events with their own entry requirements, House Rules (King of the Hill, Survival, Long Range, No Rules), and match formats.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Spending AXP consumables without checking your active Archetype first
  • Equipping a new Party AXP Multiplier over an active one and losing the remaining boosts
  • Disconnecting from a match to save an Amp use (it still counts)
  • Ignoring Masteries on secondary Archetypes when those permanent bonuses carry over to your main build
  • Buying an Amp without checking the attribute cap warning on a maxed stat

FAQ

Can you reset your Virtual Pro build for free? Yes. You can reduce individual Attribute Points and reallocate them without spending Grounds Coins or a reset item.

Do Kickabouts use up Amp charges? No. Amps are disabled in Kickabouts and their match uses are preserved.

Does voluntarily leaving a match waste an Amp use? Yes. An intentional disconnect counts as a completed eligible match for Amp duration purposes.

Do Masteries carry over when you switch Archetypes? Yes. Mastery bonuses apply to every Archetype permanently once unlocked.

Are PlayStyle+ Amps available? Not at launch. EA's September launch update confirms PlayStyle+ is not available through Amps in the current version.
