Can you get Rush for free?
No. Rush has no free unlock path in the current season.
The Override Series: Mega Man Cup did offer free Mega Man-related rewards through competitive play, including a route to the Mega Man Outfit for players who hit the required regional placement. The Mega Buster objective could also award the Override Buster Blast Spray. Rush was not part of the Cup rewards at all, so winning tournament matches won't get you the dog.
This is worth clarifying because the Cup rewards and the Item Shop cosmetics share the same Mega Man branding, which causes confusion. Earning the Mega Man Outfit through competitive play does not automatically unlock Rush.

Does Rush give you a gameplay advantage?
No. Rush is a companion cosmetic, meaning he follows your character through supported Fortnite experiences but provides zero combat benefit. He won't detect enemies, flag nearby loot, or deal damage. Opponents with Rush equipped have no mechanical edge over players without him.
Rush works across Battle Royale, Zero Build, LEGO Fortnite, Save the World, Fortnite Festival, and supported UEFN islands, though how visible he is can vary depending on the mode. In Battle Royale, your teammates can see each other's Sidekicks.
Why can't you customize Rush's appearance the normal way?
