Star Wars that's about to hit Fortnite ...

Star Wars Droid Tycoon has turned into one of the most-played modes inside Fortnite, and the upgrade system is where a huge chunk of the progression lives. Waiting on the Sandcrawler conveyor to spit out the exact Droid you need gets old fast. The good news: there are two dedicated upgrade methods that let you target specific Droids directly, and one of them costs nothing.

Where is the Droid Upgrade Station in Droid Tycoon?

The Upgrade Station sits in a building directly behind the Cantina. To reach it without wandering around, head inside the Cantina first, then exit from the right-hand side of the bar. Follow the edge of the building and you will find a Droid waiting to interact with.

Once you speak to that Droid, it shows you the next available upgrade tier for whichever companion Droid you currently have equipped, along with the exact number of Upgrade Chips required. No guesswork involved.

How to get free Droid upgrades

There is a second upgrade method inside the Cantina itself, and it costs zero Upgrade Chips. On the left side of the bar, interact with the Pit Droid. This gives you a percentage-based chance to land the next upgrade tier for your Droid without spending anything.

The catch: this interaction resets once per day. Log in daily, check the odds, and take the free roll. Even a low percentage chance adds up over time, especially on expensive Legendary and Mythic Droids where Upgrade Chips are a serious resource.

How much does it cost to upgrade Droids in Droid Tycoon?

Upgrade Chip costs scale hard with rarity. A Common Droid needs just 40 total chips to go from base level all the way through to Rainbow, which makes Common upgrades almost throwaway. Push that to Legendary and the Rainbow tier alone costs 4,000 chips. That is not a typo.

According to data compiled by Insider Gaming, here is the full breakdown of Upgrade Chip costs per rarity tier across the three upgrade levels:

The math here makes the upgrade priority obvious. Spending 400 chips on a Legendary Gold upgrade is already a significant investment, but the Diamond-to-Rainbow jump from 1,200 to 4,000 chips is where most players will stall. Save your Upgrade Chips for Legendary and Mythic Droids. For everything below Epic rarity, just wait for natural Sandcrawler spawns or pick them up through Astromech Missions and Daily Mission rewards.

What is the best strategy for spending Upgrade Chips?

The rarity gap tells you exactly where to focus. Common, Rare, and even Epic Droids are cheap enough to upgrade through normal play and Sandcrawler RNG. Legendary Droids are where the chip economy actually matters.

Here is a practical priority order based on the cost table:

  • Spend chips on Legendary Droids first, starting with the Gold tier at 400 chips before committing to the Diamond tier at 1,200.
  • Avoid burning chips on Epic or lower unless you have a surplus, since those Droids appear regularly on the Sandcrawler conveyor.
  • Use the Pit Droid daily roll on your highest-rarity Droid to reduce chip expenditure over time.
  • Do not upgrade a Droid you plan to sell.

If you are working toward Rebirth and need to understand which Droids count toward those thresholds, the complete Rebirth requirements guide breaks down every credit and Droid requirement across all 15 levels.

Does upgrading Droids affect Rebirth?

Upgrading Droids increases their value and performance, which feeds directly into your broader Rebirth progression. Higher-tier Droids contribute more to your overall setup, so upgrading your Legendary companions before attempting a Rebirth is worth the chip investment. The Rebirth Station guide covers exactly when to pull the trigger on your first reset.
