Overview
Hello Neighbor is a stealth horror game from developer Dynamic Pixels and publisher tinyBuild. Its central mystery sits behind a basement door in Theodore Peterson's house. Reaching that door means trespassing through his home, searching for useful items, and avoiding an owner determined to catch the intruder.
The setting turns an ordinary residential space into hostile territory. Rooms and entrances become parts of a puzzle, with Peterson's presence interrupting the search for answers. The game is available on Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Android, and iOS.
What happens if the Neighbor catches the player?
The Neighbor chases the player when he spots them. If he catches them, they return to their own house and must attempt another break-in. Escape keeps an intrusion going; capture forces a fresh approach to entering the property.

Progress centers on gathering the items needed to unlock the basement. Searching takes time, which creates a practical conflict between investigating the house and remaining unnoticed. An unexplored room offers another place to look, but reaching it means risking an encounter.
The core activities include:
- Sneaking through the house
- Collecting useful items
- Solving basement access puzzles
- Escaping the Neighbor

The chase-and-retry structure makes navigation part of the challenge. An entrance is also a potential exit, and learning how spaces connect supports both exploration and escape.
Adaptive AI changes familiar routes
The Neighbor's AI responds to the player's behavior, making repeated tactics less dependable. A route that works during one intrusion can attract a countermeasure during another. The challenge includes recognizing when a familiar approach needs to change.
Repeated use of a backyard window can prompt a bear trap at that entrance. Frequent trips through the front door can lead to cameras covering the approach. These defenses target habits, so choosing an entry point involves more than finding an accessible opening.

Peterson can also take shortcuts during a pursuit. Simply retracing an entry route does not guarantee a clean escape. His responses put pressure on rigid plans: successful stealth depends on observing the current obstacles and adjusting movement around them.
Sandbox puzzles and environmental interaction
Hello Neighbor combines its pursuit system with sandbox-style interaction and physics. Objects are part of the playable environment, giving exploration a hands-on role beyond identifying doors and corridors. Investigating the house involves testing possibilities as well as searching for required items.
The basement objective provides direction without removing the need to experiment. Players must work out how the objects and spaces around them contribute to access, while the threat of discovery limits how comfortably they can investigate.

The tension comes from performing puzzle-solving tasks inside an occupied home. A promising idea still needs to survive the Neighbor's interference. Hello Neighbor connects environmental puzzles with stealth horror by making both the house and its owner obstacles to the same goal.
