The Handyman achievement sounds like a joke at first: defeat the final boss with your bare hands. No weapons, no gadgets, just fists. What the description leaves out is that there's a smart trick buried in the rules that makes this far more manageable than it sounds. In How to Fish, reaching this point takes real progression, so knowing exactly what to do before you get there saves a lot of wasted effort.
What do you need to do before fighting the Mutated Bowhead Whale?
The Handyman achievement is locked behind Volcano, the fifth and final island in the game. You can't skip ahead, so you'll need to clear the earlier islands first.
Once you land on Volcano, find the scientist NPC wearing the yellow outfit. He asks you to catch a whale, but there's a prerequisite: bring him five fish first. Catch any five fish and hand them over. In return, he gives you a Fish Bucket, which you use as bait to catch the Bowhead Whale, the first boss on Volcano island.
Use any powerful weapon to take down the Bowhead Whale. Once it's dead, pick up its body and carry it to the mouth of the volcano at the top of the mountain. Drop the body into the volcano opening, and the Mutated Bowhead Whale spawns. That's the boss you need to finish with your fists.

How does the bare-hands rule actually work?
Here's the part most players misread: you don't have to punch the Mutated Bowhead Whale from full health to zero. The achievement only requires that the final hit lands with your bare fists. Every other hit during the fight can come from any weapon you want.
That changes the entire approach. Use your strongest weapon for the bulk of the fight, then switch to fists when the boss is nearly dead.
After testing different options, the Assault Rifle is the most effective weapon for the damage phase. Equipping attachments like the Compensator and Red Dot Sight makes it even more reliable at range. The goal is to shred the boss's health quickly so the bare-hands window is as short as possible.
How to fight the Mutated Whale
Here's how the Mutated Bowhead Whale fight plays out in practice:
Phase 1: Opening the fight
- After the boss spawns at the volcano, run back down the hill fast. The Mutated Bowhead Whale will chase you.
- Keep your distance and open fire with the Assault Rifle.
- The boss releases lava, so stay mobile and dodge sideways rather than backing up in a straight line.
Normal attacks are manageable at range. Keep shooting and avoid standing still.

Phase 2: Mid-fight pattern shift
- Around the halfway point of its health bar, the boss changes behavior.
- When the Mutated Bowhead Whale jumps into the air, stop shooting immediately and start running. Getting caught under it deals serious damage.
- After the jump, it bounces three times before landing. Wait out all three bounces before repositioning.
Resume shooting after the third bounce. Repeat this pattern until the boss is low.

Phase 3: Finishing with your fists
- Switch to your bare fists before the boss reaches critical health. Don't wait until it's at 5% HP, or you risk accidentally finishing it with a gun shot.
- After each of the boss's three-bounce sequences, close the gap, land a few punches, then back off before it can retaliate.
- Repeat until the final hit lands.
