Marathon Guide: How to Earn Silk

Silk is one of Marathon's most important currencies, yet during the Server Slam it left most players scratching their heads. There's no tooltip, no tutorial pop-up, just a number sitting in your lobby menu with a red exclamation point once it fills up. Once you understand what it does and how to stack it efficiently, though, the grind becomes a lot more satisfying. Here's everything you need to know about earning and spending Silk in Marathon.

What Is Silk in Marathon?

Silk is the dedicated currency for Marathon's Rewards Pass system. Think of it as the equivalent of COD Points or Valorant Points, except Bungie has built this one with some notably player-friendly rules attached. Rewards Passes in Marathon do not expire, and you can purchase previous passes you missed. None of the pass content is pay-to-win either, meaning your Silk goes toward cosmetics and weapon schemas you can buy from the armory rather than stat-boosting gear.

During the Server Slam, the Rewards Pass itself wasn't live yet, which is why Silk felt mysterious. Players who picked up the Deluxe Edition could see the currency referenced directly as a "Silk Rewards Pass Token," which confirmed its purpose before the full launch on March 5, 2026.

How Do You Earn Silk in Marathon?

The core mechanic is straightforward: you earn 10 Silk for every Season Level you gain past level 1. Reach level 3 and you'll have 20 Silk. Hit level 8 and you're sitting at 70 Silk. The math is consistent and predictable, which makes planning your spending easier.

What actually moves your Season Level forward is XP earned during runs, and there are several ways to accelerate that.

Completing Faction Contracts

Faction Contracts are the single fastest path to XP in Marathon. Each of the game's factions offers its own set of contracts, essentially targeted objectives you complete during runs. Priority contracts are the most XP-dense, but every contract you finish pushes your Season Level forward and, by extension, puts more Silk in your pocket.

One underrated tip: if you're running with a squad, helping your teammates complete their own contracts also grants you XP. Playing cooperatively is genuinely one of the most efficient ways to level up.

Solo Runs and the 20% Bonus

Solo runs carry a built-in incentive. Each successful solo run rewards an additional 20% faction points, all of which feed directly into your seasonal progression. If you're comfortable playing without a squad and can extract consistently, solo runs offer a meaningful XP bonus that stacks up over a full session.

Prioritizing Extractions and Material Loot

Successfully extracting at the end of a run provides a solid XP push regardless of how the run went overall. What matters most during the run itself is scavenging material loot, not chasing kills. Taking down UESC machines is generally a lower priority compared to collecting high-value materials, since those materials contribute more directly to your seasonal level progression.

What Is the Silk Cap in Marathon?

Your Silk balance has a hard cap of 140. You can technically over-stash up to an extra 60 beyond the standard limit, but once you hit the absolute ceiling, any further level-ups stop generating Silk entirely. Those gains are gone permanently.

With a maximum Season Level of 100, the theoretical ceiling for Silk earned through leveling alone sits around 990 Silk before the cap becomes a recurring issue. For active players who level quickly, though, the 140 cap will become relevant well before that.

The smart move is to spend your Silk once you're approaching 120 in your inventory. That gives you a buffer while ensuring you don't waste any earned currency.

How Do You Spend Silk in Marathon?

To spend your Silk, navigate to the Rewards Pass menu from the lobby and select the item you want to unlock. The pass includes both free and premium reward tracks, so even players who haven't purchased the pass can spend Silk on free-tier items.

Premium items include cosmetics and weapon schemas, the latter being particularly useful since they let you purchase specific weapons directly from the armory rather than relying on finding them in-world.
