Metro 2039

Introduction

Moscow's tunnels have a single ruler. That does not make them safe. Metro 2039 places 4A Games' post-apocalyptic FPS series under the shadow of Hunter's Novoreich regime. As the Stranger, you return from exile to a city tied to a past that refuses to stay buried. A single-player story brings survival and stealth into a struggle shaped by oppression and violent waking nightmares.

Overview

Metro 2039 is a single-player first-person shooter developed by 4A Games and published by Deep Silver. Set in the ruins and underground tunnels of Moscow, it follows a protagonist known as the Stranger as his past draws him out of exile. His destination is the Metro, somewhere he has sworn never to return.

The year is 2039. A quarter century of conflict among nuclear-war survivors ends with the underground united under Hunter, a fanatical Spartan. Unity offers little comfort here. His Novoreich regime controls the population through fear and propaganda, giving the familiar struggle to survive beneath Moscow an explicitly political threat.

What kind of game is Metro 2039?

Metro 2039 is a story-driven, single-player FPS that combines exploration, survival, combat, and stealth within a post-apocalyptic adventure. Its core gameplay pillars are:

Metro 2039
  • Exploration
  • Survival
  • First-person combat
  • Stealth

Shooting shares the focus with navigating a hostile setting. Metro 2039 connects exploration to the Stranger's return, giving the journey a personal purpose beyond moving through another ruined city. Survival fits a Moscow still poisoned by nuclear war, while stealth provides another element of its approach to danger. The single-player structure keeps that combination centered on the Stranger's story.

Moscow under the Novoreich

Hunter's control changes the shape of conflict beneath Moscow. The survivors no longer live among competing factions locked in bitter fighting; they live under one regime that demands obedience. Novoreich maintains its authority through propaganda and fear, turning the Metro's apparent unification into another form of captivity. The tunnels offer shelter from the poisoned city without offering freedom.

The regime organizes its rule around a new war for the surface against a terrifying enemy. That campaign gives Hunter's oppression a stated purpose, connecting life underground to a conflict beyond it. Metro 2039 places human authority alongside environmental danger: surviving nuclear devastation does not protect the population from the people claiming to lead it.

The Stranger's return and Metro's literary roots

The Stranger lives in the wilderness beyond Moscow, isolated and troubled by violent waking nightmares. His past forces him back toward the city and into the underground he has rejected. That makes the return more than a change of location. Metro 2039 builds its central journey around someone with an existing, painful connection to the place he must enter.

Metro 2039

Metro 2039 draws inspiration from Dmitry Glukhovsky's Metro book trilogy, retaining a literary foundation for its character-led story. The Stranger's private distress sits against Hunter's public machinery of control, linking an individual reckoning with a struggle over the underground's future. That contrast gives the survival FPS its identity: exploration, combat, and stealth take place in a Moscow where both personal history and political power make the return dangerous.
