Mortal Shell 2 Guide: Best Build for Tiel

Tiel is the go-to shell for players who want to hit hard, hit fast, and hit invisibly. Mortal Shell II gives you a lot of ways to build damage, but the Critical Strike approach on Tiel stands out because it turns Shadow Strike into a guaranteed critical hit engine. Every piece of this build feeds into that loop, from your weapon choice to your Shell Point allocation.

What weapons should Tiel use?

The Axe and Dagger is the clear primary weapon for this build. Its attack speed makes it ideal for building Bloodcursed procs quickly and recovering Resolve between engagements. Fast light combos mean more opportunities to apply status effects and keep your critical hit window open.

For the sidearm, the Salvaged Trebuchaxe does the heavy lifting when you need burst damage from range. After setting up a Shadow Strike, the Trebuchaxe delivers a charged critical hit that can delete chunks of a boss's health bar in a single shot. These two weapons complement each other directly: the Axe and Dagger builds stacks and Resolve, the Trebuchaxe cashes them in.

tip
Always have Resolve available before triggering Shadow Strike. The critical hit guarantee only pays off when you can follow it with a charged Trebuchaxe shot.

Which Tarstones work best for this build?

Tarstones are split across your primary weapon, sidearm, and support slots, and each category has a specific job here.

Primary weapon Tarstones

For the Axe and Dagger, equip Unyielding Stone in the combat slot to gain stagger immunity during light combos. This keeps your attack strings uninterrupted against aggressive enemies. In the infusion slot, Arbiter's Prize applies Bloodcurse directly to your weapon, which feeds the build's core damage condition. The ability slot goes to Acolyte's Stone, which enables charged light attacks for additional damage output.

Sidearm Tarstones

The Corroded Stone stacks damage-over-time effects on top of the Salvaged Trebuchaxe's already high burst damage, making it even more punishing against single targets. The Tarred Fragment in the ability slot helps clear groups of enemies faster when you're surrounded.

Support Tarstones

Early in the game, the support slots should prioritize resource generation. Deadeye Stone increases ranged critical damage, which directly amplifies the Trebuchaxe's charged shots. Retribution Stone boosts Riposte Damage for moments when you land a perfect counter. The remaining slots work best with Gloombound Stone and Justiciar's Stone to keep your Gloom and Coin income steady during the early-to-mid game.

How to allocate Shell Points for Tiel?

With 13 Shell Points available for this early-to-mid game build, the priority is clear: max out Critical Role first. At level 3, it costs 6 Shell Points and delivers both high critical damage and the guaranteed Critical Strike trigger after a Shadow Strike. That single ability defines the entire build.

From there, Seal Affinity at level 2 (3 Shell Points) serves as a safety net, granting Shadow stacks whenever you fail a Guard or Parry. Since invisibility and Shadow Strike access depend on those stacks, this keeps the build functional even when your timing slips.

The remaining 4 points go to single-level investments: Escalation, Lasting Legacy, Deathmark, and Nightstride. Of these, Nightstride is the most impactful for survivability. It widens the activation window for Shadow Dash, making well-timed dodges more forgiving and allowing Shadow Dash to deal Stagger Damage. Lasting Legacy extends invisibility duration by prolonging Shadow stacks, which gives you more time to set up the perfect charged shot.

This Shell Point spread is designed for levels 18-20. If you're still in the early areas, prioritize Critical Role and Seal Affinity before spending on the single-level abilities.

What seal and items should you equip?

The Untarnished Seal is the right choice for this build. Its effect lets you block incoming attacks with your weapon, and a well-timed block triggers a Perfect Guard that deals Break Damage. Against aggressive bosses that don't give you clean windows to dodge, this gives you a reliable way to punish their attacks without abandoning the critical hit setup.

For items, Common Moonshine handles Resolve recovery as your active slot. Resolve fuels Shadow Strike, so keeping it topped up is non-negotiable. The Sheephead Totem fills the passive slot and reduces enemy max health, which shortens boss fights and makes the Trebuchaxe's burst damage feel even more decisive.

How to play the Critical Tiel build

The combat loop is straightforward once you understand what each step is doing:

  1. Trigger Shadow Strike to enter invisibility and guarantee Critical Strikes on your next attacks.
  2. Use Charged Light Attacks with the Axe and Dagger to build Perforation Stacks via Wounding Stone.
  3. Follow up with a Charged Critical hit from the Salvaged Trebuchaxe for maximum burst damage.

The Axe and Dagger's speed means you can build stacks quickly without overcommitting. Shadow Dash, enhanced by Nightstride, is your primary defensive tool. The wider activation window makes dodging more consistent, and the added Stagger Damage on successful Shadow Dashes can interrupt enemy attacks before they land.

Seal Affinity exists for moments when the rotation breaks down. If you miss a Guard or Parry, it automatically feeds you Shadow stacks, keeping the invisibility and critical hit cycle going without requiring a perfect execution streak.

Getting the most out of Tiel

This build covers the early-to-mid game up through levels 18-20. The core philosophy, chaining Shadow Strike into guaranteed critical hits, scales well as you upgrade your Tarstones and unlock more Shell Points.
