Mortal Shell II Review
8.5/10
Mortal Shell II is the kind of sequel that makes you appreciate how much a developer can grow. Cold Symmetry took real criticism on board and built something meaningfully better. The shell system, the Tarstones, the weapon variety, and an open world that actually rewards curiosity all combine into one of the more satisfying soulslikes I've played. It stumbles in the back half, where enemy recycling and a frustrating final boss drag things down, and the map could do with a serious rework. But those problems never undo the hours of fun that came before them. If you bounced off the first game, this one is worth another look. If you already loved it, this is the sequel you were hoping for.
8.5
Pros
Eight distinct shells offer genuinely different playstyles
Tarstone and weapon systems create deep, rewarding build variety
Open world is packed with secrets and surprising personality
Combat feels sharp and responsive from the first fight
Cold Symmetry patched major progression issues within a week of launch
Cons
Enemy variety thins out badly in the second half
Navigation is confusing, with areas that look too similar
Final boss has a genuinely awful mechanic that undercuts the ending
Some bugs and rough edges persist even after post-launch patches
