Buried loot is scattered across every corner of the Caribbean in Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced, and tracking it all down without a guide is a genuine time sink. There are 22 standard Treasure Maps split between the northern and southern halves of the world map, plus 5 additional maps you can only unlock by restoring torn fragments through a brand-new shop mechanic. Miss the setup for that last part and you'll sail right past some of the best gear in the game.
How treasure maps work in Black Flag Resynced
Every Treasure Map points to a Buried Chest somewhere in the Caribbean. The map itself shows a rough sketch of the surrounding landmarks, and each entry comes with grid coordinates so you know exactly where to dig. The key here is that you can only interact with a dig site after the corresponding map is in your codex. No map, no chest, no matter how long you stand on the spot.
Maps come from two places. Most are found on corpses, inside warehouses after you steal the key, or tucked into environmental nooks across the islands. The second type requires you to collect scattered fragments and pay to restore them at the Treasure Dealer in Great Inagua.

The Treasure Dealer and restored map pieces
This is where things get more involved. Five fragment-based maps are available through the Treasure Dealer, and the rewards are significantly better than most standard chest drops.
The Preserved Map fragments drop from warehouse plundering across settlements including Havana, Cat Island, and Matanzas. Tattered fragments come from Pirate Hunter frigates and men-of-war that Spanish and British factions send when your Wanted Level spikes high enough. Board them and choose "Open Captain's Lockbox" to claim the pieces.
Digested fragments require hunting white jaguars. There's a reliable spawn point in Great Inagua at coordinates 825,439, past the wild pigs toward the swamps. Leave the area and let a full in-game day pass for the jaguar to respawn. Weathered fragments are locked inside the large chests in smuggler dens at Petite Caverne, Jiguey, San Juan, Ambergris Key, and Anotto Bay.
The Yellowed Map is the grind. You need 10 fragments, and they appear as potential rewards from Kenway's Fleet trade missions, specifically schooner-based runs in high-risk regions. The drop is not guaranteed, so expect to run dozens of missions before completing the set.
What this means for completionists is that the Treasure Dealer maps, particularly the Preserved one with its legendary outfit and trinket that makes pistol quickshots instantly kill brutes, are worth prioritizing early. The sooner you build the shop, the sooner you can start stockpiling fragments.
For a full breakdown of what else changed in this remaster, the all Black Flag Resynced changes guide covers every meaningful difference from the 2013 original. And if you're chasing 100% completion, you'll want to cross-reference the full trophy and achievement list to make sure these buried chests are counting toward the right objectives.
