Embark Studios has been talking up Frozen Trail as the biggest update ARC Raiders has seen since launch. New enemies, a massive map, fresh core mechanics. Good stuff. But buried in the full reveal today is something that will land differently depending on how you feel about live-service monetization: a paid battle pass is coming to the game.
From Raider Deck to Reward Pass
Since launch, ARC Raiders has run on a system called the Raider Deck. The idea was simple: each season brought a new deck, players grinded through tiers by completing in-game tasks, and everything was free. No wallet required.
That changes on October 8.
Embark is replacing the Raider Deck with something called the Reward Pass, framing it as an "evolution" of the old system. In the team's own words from a recent blog post: "These passes are an evolution of the Raider Decks, allowing you to try out all of the exciting new items and content from the update."
Call it what you want. An evolution, a reimagining, a new direction. The practical result is a paid battle pass.
How the Reward Pass breaks down
The new system splits into three distinct tracks:
- Free Pass , Available to all players with no cost. Still offers rewards for playing, same as before.
- Premium Pass , The paid tier. More rewards, exclusive cosmetics, and premium versions of items that exist in the free track.
- Legacy Pass , A separate option for players who want to keep unlocking content from previous Raider Decks. Essentially a catch-up mechanism so older rewards don't disappear behind the new system.
The exact price of the Premium Pass has not been announced yet.
What this means for the player base
Here's the thing: the Raider Deck being completely free was one of the things that made ARC Raiders feel different from the wave of extraction shooters that charge you at every turn. Removing it isn't a small change.
The Legacy Pass is a smart move to soften the transition, and keeping a free tier is the bare minimum players should expect. But the shift toward a premium cosmetic tier is a clear signal that Embark is tightening up its monetization model. Whether the free rewards stay genuinely worthwhile or gradually get hollowed out to push players toward paying is the real question, and that only gets answered over time.
Frozen Trail itself still looks like a substantial update regardless of how you feel about the Reward Pass. New ARC enemy types, a larger map, and core mechanic changes are all part of the same October 8 drop.
If you want to squeeze every bit of value out of the free side of things before the new system lands, the ARC Raiders strategies for maximum Raider Coins guide is worth a look. There are also free cosmetics still available through other channels, including Twitch Drops running through the current period if you haven't claimed those yet.
For everything else dropping with the update, the full ARC Raiders guides collection has you covered as Frozen Trail gets closer.
