Cyberpunk 2 multiplayer isn’t confirmed, but a CD Projekt Red job listing for the sequel asks for someone who understands multiplayer networking for quests, and I really hope it’s real. I would love to play Cyberpunk with other people. I’ve got 36 hours in Cyberpunk 2077 on Steam, and I’d definitely have played more of it with friends.
Key takeaways
- Cyberpunk 2 multiplayer isn’t confirmed. A CD Projekt Red listing for a Lead Quest Programmer on Cyberpunk 2 names multiplayer networking for quests as a nice-to-have skill.
- Cyberpunk 2077 was meant to get multiplayer, first after launch and then as its own game, and CD Projekt dropped the plan after the rough 2020 launch.
- Cyberpunk 2 went into pre-production in May 2025, and CD Projekt says pre-production to release takes four to five years on average.
Is Cyberpunk 2 going to have multiplayer?
Maybe. The Lead Quest Programmer listing is filed under “Project: Cyberpunk 2”, and the job is leading the engineering team for the game’s story technology at CD Projekt Red’s North American team, centered in Boston. Right at the bottom, under “Nice to Have”, it asks for an “understanding of multiplayer network architecture and client-server synchronization for game state/quests.”
That’s a skill they’d like, not one you need to apply, so it isn’t a promise. Cheat Happens spotted it, and Eurogamer’s write-up is clear it’s no confirmation. It does line up with what joint CEO Adam Badowski told Reuters in January 2024, when he said the studio was “considering” multiplayer for the sequel.
What would Cyberpunk 2 co-op look like?
For me it would be like Payday, or GTA, when you’re starting off doing the jobs and getting together with your crew and your boys. Cyberpunk is already built around jobs: in 2077, fixers hand V gigs all over Night City. Doing those with friends instead of on my own is the version I’d want to play.
I know there will be people who want it kept single-player, because you do lose some of the immersion and the story side when other people are running around in your game. I don’t think it has to be one or the other. The story can stay separate, with parts, or abilities, that are co-op. I think there’s a way to make this work, and CD Projekt Red is a developer that could actually make it happen.
Why didn’t Cyberpunk 2077 get multiplayer?
Cyberpunk 2077 was always supposed to get multiplayer. Adam Badowski, then studio head, told Eurogamer back in 2013 that it would have “multiplayer features”. By early 2020, CD Projekt said the multiplayer had grown into its own triple-A project that wouldn’t arrive until after 2021, according to Wikipedia.
Then the launch went badly and the plan changed. Philipp Weber, senior quest designer on 2077, told Eurogamer in 2022 that after launch they “really needed to look at what were the priorities”. Fixing the single-player game came first, and multiplayer is what got dropped.
Adam Kiciński, then joint CEO, told investors the studio had “reconsidered” a standalone multiplayer Cyberpunk and was now “focusing on bringing online into all of our franchises one day.” He was just as clear that the studio “makes single-player, story-driven, triple-A RPGs” and that “that is not changing.” So any online part in Cyberpunk 2 would most likely sit alongside the story.
Are single-player games on the way out?
I do play a lot of these games solo anyway. But when I stream them, a lot of what I get from chat is “can we play together?” People want to play a lot more games together than they used to.
I think single-player is going to end up being for things like the FromSoft games, and for games like Phantom Blade Zero, which just came out. Even then, Elden Ring isn’t fully single-player, and neither is Dark Souls. You can bring people in to help you with the bosses. Maybe that’s the way it pans out for Cyberpunk 2 as well.
When is Cyberpunk 2 coming out?
Cyberpunk 2 doesn’t have a release date. CD Projekt announced the sequel in October 2022 under the codename Project Orion, it went into pre-production in May 2025, and the studio has called it Cyberpunk 2 since then. It’s being built in Unreal Engine 5 by CD Projekt’s North American teams, including a Boston studio set up in 2023 to drive it.
CD Projekt has said “our journey from pre-production to final release takes four to five years on average”, which would put it around 2029 or 2030, and it hasn’t ruled out late 2030 or early 2031, according to Wikipedia. Until then it’s still feeding 2077. Update 2.5 landed with Edgerunners Season 2 and added dual-wielding and cyberware customization, and the game passed 40 million copies sold in July 2026.
