A lot is dropping for Final Fantasy XIV Online players this week. Square Enix dropped a new Switch 2 trailer during the latest Nintendo Direct, locked in the Berlin Fan Festival dates, opened up official merch sales, and kicked off a free seasonal event with otter minions on the line. Here's the lowdown on all of it.
Switch 2 launch date is official: August 26
The Nintendo Direct trailer gave fans their clearest look yet at Final Fantasy XIV running on Switch 2, highlighting iconic characters and bosses from across the game's history. More importantly, it confirmed the release date: August 26, 2026.
The Switch 2 version brings the full Final Fantasy XIV experience to Nintendo hardware for the first time, which is a genuinely big deal for players who have been waiting on a portable option that isn't a Steam Deck workaround. The game is currently available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
Berlin Fan Festival: July 25 and 26 at Messe Berlin
The next Fan Festival is heading to Hub27 at Messe Berlin on July 25 and 26. Producer and Director Naoki Yoshida will deliver a keynote covering what's ahead for the game, which is the headline draw for anyone tracking the next major content announcements.
Beyond the keynote, the event includes development panels, a cosplay event called Glamoured to Life, and two live music performances: a piano concert on Saturday evening and a full band set on Sunday night.
For players who can't make the trip to Germany, Square Enix will livestream the entire event on the official Final Fantasy XIV YouTube and Twitch channels. Given that Fan Fests typically come with major expansion or patch reveals, the keynote stream alone is worth blocking time for.
Official Fan Fest merch is now on sale
Square Enix has opened the first wave of Fan Festival merchandise through the official APAC online store. The current lineup includes a trembling Yan plushie, a Mate Cookie faux leather charm, and role icon jet tag keychains, among other items.
Stock on event merchandise tends to move fast around Fan Fests, so if any of those items are on your radar, sooner is better than later.
Make it Rain Campaign: grab your free otter minion before it's gone
The 2026 Make it Rain Campaign is live right now, and this year's theme is An Otterly Irresistible Collaboration. The event is free for all players and hands out the Senor Otter minion, the Senor Otter Pack, and three housing furnishings just for completing the You Otter Be There quest.
The catch: the quest deadline was June 25 at 12:59 AM AEST. If you haven't completed it yet, check the official event page to confirm whether any window remains in your timezone.
Free housing furnishings and a minion for completing a single quest is a solid return on a few minutes of playtime. What most players miss with seasonal events like this is the housing rewards, which can be surprisingly hard to find on the market board after the event ends.
What this means for the next few months
Between the Switch 2 launch in August and whatever Yoshida announces at Berlin in July, the second half of 2026 is shaping up to be one of the busier periods for Final Fantasy XIV in recent memory. The Switch 2 release alone opens the game to an entirely new player base, and a Fan Fest keynote typically signals a content roadmap that carries the community through the next major update cycle.
If you're catching up on current content before Berlin, the FFXIV Patch 7.4 Into the Mist content guide breaks down everything added in the most recent major update, from new raids to the glamour overhaul. The Fan Fest keynote will likely build directly on where Patch 7.4 left things.
