Group C at VALORANT Champions Shanghai opened with two decisive results: Paper Rex beat Team Liquid 2-1 in a scrappy best-of-three, and G2 Esports comfortably dispatched TYLOO to put the Chinese squad in immediate danger of elimination. Both matches played out at the Jing'an Sports Center in Shanghai, and the results set up what should be a genuinely compelling winners' match on September 29.

How PRX got the job done (and almost got in trouble doing it)
The series between Paper Rex and Team Liquid had a bit of everything. PRX opened on Ascent and made it look easy, winning 13-4 after building an 8-4 halftime lead and closing out the back half without dropping a round. TL hit back hard on Haven, though. PRX struggled to break through on attack, went into halftime down 5-7, and never recovered, losing the map 7-13 to level the series.
Lotus was where PRX showed what they're capable of. They went out to a 9-3 halftime lead, survived a TL comeback run in the second half that briefly made things uncomfortable, and closed it out 13-10. The clinching moment came from an Ace by Khalish "d4v41" Rusyaidee, which was about as clean a way to seal a Champions opener as you could ask for.
The star of the series was Ilia "something" Petrov, who posted 58 kills against just 33 deaths on Yoru across the BO3. He was the engine behind PRX's aggressive tempo, and he leaned into that role fully, perhaps a bit too fully. During the first map, something shot dead bodies at opponents, a practice Riot Games had explicitly flagged as prohibited before the tournament started. He received a warning for it.
His take on it afterward was unapologetic: "I did everything I could to build momentum by shooting bodies and having fun, and then I got a warning for it." Asked if it was worth it, he said everyone was laughing, so yes.
For TL, rookie Ognjen "GSR" Bondžić made his VCT debut and was the only player on either team to finish the series with a rating above 1.00 (1.06). He looked shaky early, by his own admission, but settled in as the series progressed. The bigger story for TL is what they do next: they now face TYLOO in an elimination match with one loss already on the books.

The second match of the day was less dramatic but arguably more telling. G2 Esports beat TYLOO 2-0, with the second map, Sunset, ending at a brutal 13-3. For a TYLOO side that won VCT China Stage 2 and came in as the region's top seed, that scoreline is a gut punch.
Here's the thing: TYLOO's lack of international experience showed up almost immediately. After holding their own in the early stages of the first map, they started making compounding errors in the second half that G2 punished without mercy. Playing in front of a home crowd that was clearly expecting more from them made it worse.
What made G2's performance notable was the context around it. With Andrej "babybay" Francisty and Jacob "valyn" Batio confirmed to be leaving the team after this tournament, questions about G2's motivation were legitimate going in. Instead, they played with what valyn himself described as the most fun he's had on a stage. That kind of loose, pressure-free mentality translated directly into their performance.
What the Group C bracket looks like now
The standings after day one set up two very different trajectories for the four teams involved.
PRX and G2 meeting in the winners' match is a genuinely good draw. PRX are one of the tournament favorites despite a difficult Stage 2, and G2 just showed they can perform even with roster uncertainty hanging over them. The losers' match between TL and TYLOO, meanwhile, is a straight elimination game with no safety net.
Group D gets underway tomorrow, with Masters Santiago winners Nongshim RedForce facing defending champions NRG, and Xi Lai Gaming making their Champions debut against Karmine Corp, the top seed out of VCT EMEA.
