Grinding Gear Games dropped one of the bigger surprises at Gamescom Opening Night Live today: Path of Exile 2 has a firm 1.0 release date, and it lands on December 11.
That date matters for more than just the version number. The moment 1.0 hits, the game goes fully free-to-play, removing the Founder's Pack requirement that has been the only way into early access since launch. Anyone who has been waiting on the sidelines can jump straight in without spending a cent.
The Duelist fills a gap that's been there since day one
The headline addition for 1.0 is the Duelist, a melee-focused class and, strangely enough, the first sword-wielding character in the entire game. The Duelist can pair a sword with a shield and is built around aggressive, forward-pressure combat. It is a notable gap to fill this late, but the class design sounds like it fits the game's demanding combat rhythm well.
Two remaining campaign Acts will also ship with 1.0, completing the story that early access players have been sitting with for nearly two years. The full release arrives almost exactly two years after the initial early access launch, which itself drew queue times stretching into the millions on day one.
A date that kept moving, now locked in
Here's the thing: this date has been a moving target for a while. Grinding Gear Games previously said there was roughly a 65 percent chance of a 1.0 launch this year, and earlier in 2026 the studio indicated it was aiming for a window after November's ExileCon. December 11 lands squarely in that range, suggesting the team hit the schedule they were quietly building toward.
The studio is also running a free registration campaign on the official Path of Exile 2 website between now and launch. The more players that register, the more community-wide rewards unlock, including a pet. It is a straightforward way to build momentum heading into what will effectively be the game's public debut for a large chunk of potential players.
What this means for the ARPG space
Path of Exile 2 going free-to-play on December 11 puts it in direct competition with every other ARPG heading into the holiday window. The early access period demonstrated the demand was real, and completing the campaign removes one of the main reasons cautious players held off.
For anyone planning to hit the ground running, it is worth getting familiar with the systems now. The Path of Exile 2 Kalguuran Gems skills guide breaks down every Kalguuran Gem skill, how to obtain them, and which builds benefit most. Endgame players pushing Atlas content will also want to look at the Atlas Masters passives breakdown covering the best picks across Jado, Doryani, and Hilda for maximizing loot.
December 11 is the date to circle. Between the Duelist, the completed campaign, and the removal of the paywall, this is the version of Path of Exile 2 that Grinding Gear has been building toward since the early access door opened.
