NHL 27 Update 2 drops today, September 29, at 1 p.m. ET / 10 a.m. PT, and it covers a lot of ground. There is no single headline feature here, but that is actually the point. EA has swept through gameplay, Connected Franchise, Hockey Ultimate Team, World of Chel, presentation, audio, and art to address a wide range of community-reported problems that have been building since launch. If you have run into crashes, weird penalty calls, or broken HUT filters, this patch is for you.

What changed in NHL 27 Update 2 gameplay?

The on-ice changes in Update 2 are targeted rather than sweeping, but a couple of them will be immediately noticeable.

Boarding and Charging penalty tuning is the biggest gameplay adjustment. The calls were inconsistent before this patch, and EA has rebalanced how the game reads physical contact in those situations. Whether the tuning lands where it should is something you will feel within your first few games.

Beyond penalties, the update addresses:

  • A desync that could occur in World of Chel online play following a penalty sequence
  • A rare HUT Wildcard desync after a missed penalty shot
  • An arm or hand twitch animation that appeared after releasing a pass while glide skating
  • Broken AFK mode logic in Ones gameplay

None of these are earth-shattering, but the glide-skating animation glitch was genuinely distracting, and the Wildcard desync was annoying enough to derail competitive matches.

What did Update 2 fix in Connected Franchise?

Connected Franchise gets some of its most annoying bugs addressed here, with EA targeting crashes, roster logic errors, and Commissioner Tool problems.

Three separate crash scenarios are fixed: one when swapping the manager's team on the League Advancing screen, one on the Game Setup screen, and one when using Quick Swap after changing the playbook with the Scratched filter active on the Edit Lines screen. If you have had CFM sessions end abruptly, any one of these could have been the culprit.

On the roster side, two fixes stand out:

  • Goalie Goals Against stats were not tracking correctly in player stats and are now fixed
  • The Fill Lines feature was incorrectly placing defensemen at forward positions and forwards on defense, which is the kind of error that quietly ruins your lineup if you do not catch it

The Commissioner Tools also received attention. League invites to players on the same platform were broken when Cross-Play was disabled, and several error message issues have been cleaned up. OT and SO game results now display correctly in Box Scores when using Game Override.

How much did HUT change in Update 2?

Hockey Ultimate Team receives the longest list of fixes in this update by a significant margin. EA targeted crashes, the Auction House, Sets, Objectives, chemistry, strategies, and the Store.

Stability fixes

Several crashes that could occur when entering HUT, editing lines, accessing the Sets tab, or starting a Cup Chase match have been resolved. A soft lock when rapidly adding players to a Player Exchange Set is also gone.

Auction House and Sets

The missing Icons filter has been added back to both My Collection and Auction House searches. This was a notable omission that made finding specific cards unnecessarily difficult. The Auction House also received behavioral fixes to prevent items in an active lineup from appearing in trade offers incorrectly.

Lines, chemistry, and strategies

  • Custom Playbook strategy changes were resetting after the daily rollover and are now fixed
  • The Ability Points indicator on the Edit Lineup screen was missing and has been restored
  • Captain Chemistry activation animation was misaligned and is corrected
  • Quick Swap was appearing incorrectly on only one player in Wildcard 5v5 Lines
  • Wildcard Objectives were not updating after online matches, which is now resolved

Store and packs

Store notification badges were not appearing or clearing correctly when offers rolled over. The Item Inbox was displaying a count of zero after opening a pack. Navigation was also sending players back to the beginning of the Store after buying the final available instance of a limited pack, which is now corrected.

What else does Update 2 cover?

World of Chel

Two crash fixes land for World of Chel: one during the second match of EASHL Clubs 6v6 and 3v3, and one when entering Club Practice after repeatedly playing rollover games. Neither is a gameplay change, but both were causing sessions to end without warning.

Presentation and audio

EA addressed a wide range of visual and audio problems. Commentary will no longer repeat the line "it's his first of the game" during goal calls. Arena intro sound effects now play correctly for custom teams.

On the visual side:

  • Tampa Bay Lightning Tesla coils now display correctly during goal celebration cinematics
  • Jersey flickering on the player holding the Stanley Cup during the celebration is fixed
  • Retro goalie masks were clipping into the sides of players' heads
  • Dustin Wolf's ear was clipping through his goalie mask
  • Crowd members' jerseys and shoulders were clipping when raising their arms
  • Hair clipping through players' ears in the Creation Zone is resolved

New center-ice designs and uniforms

Update 2 adds updated center-ice designs for 17 NHL teams, plus teams across the AHL, ECHL, OHL, QMJHL, and WHL. The NHL teams receiving updated center ice include the Anaheim Ducks, Buffalo Sabres, Carolina Hurricanes, Chicago Blackhawks, Colorado Avalanche, Florida Panthers, Los Angeles Kings, Minnesota Wild, Montreal Canadiens, Nashville Predators, Pittsburgh Penguins, San Jose Sharks, St. Louis Blues, Tampa Bay Lightning, Toronto Maple Leafs, Vancouver Canucks, and Winnipeg Jets.

Uniform additions are extensive, covering ECHL teams like the Adirondack Thunder, Jacksonville Icemen, and Toledo Walleye, plus Liiga clubs Jokerit Helsinki and Tappara Tampere, and a full set of uniforms across the Swiss National League and SHL.

For more on NHL 27 and how these changes affect your approach to each mode, the full NHL 27 strategy guides collection has you covered. EA Sports is one of the more active sports simulation games publishers when it comes to post-launch support, and Update 2 is a clear example of that.
