Overview
Released in January 2019, Resident Evil 2 is a full ground-up remake of Capcom's 1998 original, developed by Capcom Development Division 1 using the RE Engine. The result isn't a remaster or a port with a fresh coat of paint. Maps are redesigned, character models rebuilt, and story beats reimagined to feel genuinely new even for players who know every corner of the original Raccoon City Police Department by heart.
The shift to an over-the-shoulder camera, borrowed from Resident Evil 7: Biohazard's design philosophy, completely changes how the game feels. Tension that once came from fixed camera angles and tank controls now comes from tight corridors, limited ammunition, and the ever-present threat of Mr. X, the relentless Tyrant who stalks Leon's campaign without warning or mercy. The RE Engine handles all of this with a level of visual fidelity that made it one of the best-looking games of 2019.
Gameplay and mechanics
The core survival horror loop here is tight and deliberate. Resources are scarce, inventory management matters, and every encounter forces a decision: spend the ammo or find another way around. Key features that define the experience include:

- Over-the-shoulder third-person shooting
- Inventory grid management with limited slots
- Environmental puzzle solving
- Crafting ammunition and healing items
- Mr. X's unpredictable patrol behavior
Both Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield have separate campaigns that cover the same events from different angles, with unique weapons, story beats, and supporting characters. Playing both isn't optional if you want the full picture.

World and setting
Raccoon City in 1998 is ground zero for a viral outbreak engineered by the Umbrella Corporation. The city has collapsed overnight, and the two protagonists, a rookie cop and a college student looking for her brother, are caught in the middle of it. The RPD building serves as the game's central hub, a sprawling, interconnected space that rewards exploration and punishes carelessness.
The atmosphere is relentless. Flickering lights, distant groans, and the heavy footsteps of Mr. X overhead turn routine backtracking into something genuinely stressful. Capcom's sound design does as much work as the visuals here.
What makes the two campaigns worth replaying?
Each campaign runs roughly eight to ten hours on a first playthrough, but the game is built with repeat runs in mind. Leon's route through the RPD differs meaningfully from Claire's, and the so-called "2nd Run" for each character introduces new story content and altered puzzle solutions. Speedrunning has become a major part of the community around this game, with players chasing S+ ranks under strict time limits.

Separate downloadable content adds three standalone scenarios, including "The Ghost Survivors," which explores what-if stories for three characters who don't survive the main game. These are shorter, more arcade-focused experiences that add replayability without padding the main campaign.
Impact and legacy
Resident Evil 2 holds a Metacritic score above 90 across platforms and is widely cited as one of the strongest survival horror games released in the last decade. Its success directly influenced the direction of the series, feeding into Resident Evil 3's 2020 remake and the development approach for Resident Evil Village. For anyone interested in how modern survival horror is made, this game is the clearest example of the RE Engine's potential and Capcom's willingness to rebuild rather than simply repackage.
