Edicts are one of the most impactful progression systems in Bizarre Lineage on Roblox. They sit on top of your Stand and fighting style, adding persistent passive bonuses that carry through every fight. Introduced in Update 1, there are currently two Edicts available: Soul Calibre and Dark Determination. Each one requires its own quest chain to unlock, and both scale through upgrade tiers using Prestige Shards. Getting them early and upgrading them fast is the difference between a player who wins trades and one who loses them.

What are Edicts in Bizarre Lineage?
Edicts function as a persistent passive ability layer. Unlike your Stand moves or fighting style, they don't require active inputs to trigger their core effects. Instead, they run in the background and shift your combat math in your favor, provided you've met the right conditions.
Both Edicts upgrade through Prestige Shards, meaning you'll need to push your prestige progression before you can max either one out. If you haven't thought about prestige yet, check out the Your Bizarre Adventure Prestige Guide for context on how shard farming fits into long-term progression.
Here's a quick comparison of both Edicts at a glance:
Soul Calibre: how does the stance system work?
Soul Calibre is a dual-mode Edict that gives you two distinct combat stances: Offence and Defence. You toggle between them actively, which means you can adapt mid-fight depending on what the situation demands. Running down an opponent? Flip to Offence. Getting pressured and need to survive a burst combo? Switch to Defence.
The upgrade path runs from Tier 1 through Tier 5, with each tier costing Prestige Shards. Higher tiers strengthen both stances, so the sooner you start feeding shards into it, the more value you extract from every fight.
How to unlock Soul Calibre
Soul Calibre unlocks through a 3-step quest chain. The NPC you need is Doppio, standing on the bridge near Bus Stop 14. The quest chain is relatively short compared to Dark Determination, making Soul Calibre the more accessible of the two Edicts for players who are still building up their progression.
Dark Determination: is the high-risk Edict worth it?
Dark Determination is the more demanding Edict to unlock, but the payoff is significant. It activates automatically when your HP drops below 60%, triggering a set of combat bonuses that include damage buffs, defense increases, HP recovery, and lifesteal. At higher tiers, you also get extended duration and cosmetic rewards on top of the core stat bonuses.
The risk is obvious: you need to be in danger for it to turn on. Players who run passive or defensive builds might not hit that 60% threshold often enough to get consistent value. For aggressive players who trade hits and push fights, Dark Determination is genuinely strong.
What does Dark Determination require to unlock?
This is where things get demanding. Dark Determination requires three separate prerequisites before you can even start:
- Completing a 7-step quest chain with the Determination NPC at Bus Stop 14 (behind the boulder)
- Having the Bloodlust Perk active
- Being a member of a Gang
All three conditions need to be met. The Gang membership requirement in particular means you can't solo your way to this Edict without engaging with that system first.
How many upgrade tiers does Dark Determination have?
Dark Determination has 5 tiers, with 20 total Prestige Shards required to reach max tier. Each tier adds to the core bonuses: damage, defense, HP recovery, and lifesteal all scale up as you invest shards. The extended duration and cosmetic rewards unlock at the higher tiers, giving you a visual signal when the Edict is active in addition to the mechanical benefits.
For a deeper look at how fighting style choices pair with these Edict bonuses, the Your Bizarre Adventure Fighting Styles Guide breaks down how styles like Vampirism stack with lifesteal-oriented builds.

Dark Determination tier upgrades
Which Edict should you prioritize?
The honest answer depends on your playstyle. Soul Calibre is easier to unlock and gives you consistent value through the stance toggle regardless of your HP. If you're newer to the game or still building out your prestige levels, start here.
Dark Determination has a higher ceiling but a steeper unlock cost. The 7-step quest chain, Bloodlust Perk, and Gang membership requirement mean you need to be reasonably deep into the game before it's even accessible. Once you have it at Tier 4 or 5, the lifesteal and damage bonuses in the sub-60% HP window can completely flip fights that you should have lost.
Long-term, you want both. They occupy different roles and the Prestige Shard investment pays off across the full game. Check out the Bizarre Lineage Tier List to see which Stands and Sub Abilities pair best with each Edict's bonuses.
Edict upgrade priority: where to spend your Prestige Shards
Here's a practical spending order based on what delivers the most immediate combat impact:
- Soul Calibre Tier 1-2 first, since the unlock cost is low and the stance system is immediately useful
- Dark Determination Tier 1 as soon as you meet the unlock requirements
- Alternate between both from Tier 2 onward, prioritizing whichever fits your current build
- Dark Determination Tiers 4-5 last, since those tiers add the extended duration and cosmetics rather than core stat jumps
