Dead Rails is one of the standout experiences in Roblox's The Hollow Halloween event, and its quest is genuinely more involved than most. You're not just pressing a button and waiting for a badge to pop. There are randomized key locations, a bank vault code, a boss encounter, and a multi-stop train sequence that catches a lot of players off guard. Finish it all and you walk away with the Hollow Quest badge, the permanent title Ticket Holder, 20 Tickets, and the Cowboy Hat of the Dead UGC item.

How do you start the Dead Rails quest in The Hollow?
There are two ways in. The first is through Floor 3 of The Hollow hub: navigate the maze until you find the secret room tied to Dead Rails (not the graveyard puzzle room). The second is faster: look toward the right side of The Hollow hub and enter Dead Rails directly alongside other experiences like Flee the Facility and Ao Oni.
Once you load in, create a match on Normal mode. Solo, duo, or squad all work fine. Before jumping into the quest, complete the short tutorial. It's optional, but it hands you starting cash that's worth having.
Step-by-step: how to complete the Dead Rails quest
Step 1: Find the Stain and claim Phantom Key 1
After spawning, search the map for a dark, shadow-like creature called the Stain. Its position is randomized every run, so there's no fixed spot. Check the walls around the Sheriff's Office, the houses to its right, and the General Store area. Both inner walls and the outer boundary of the map are valid spawn locations.
Interact with the Stain and a short cutscene plays. Phantom Key 1 drops directly in front of you. Pick it up and store it in your sack.
With the key in hand, head to the train at spawn. A Red Lock floats near the train. Use Phantom Key 1 on it, and a portal opens. Step through to board the Phantom Train.
Step 2: Board the train and stock up on supplies
Once inside the train, move toward the right end of the carriages. Every car you pass through has ammo and weapons sitting out. Grab everything you find, especially the Revolver on the seat near the exit door. You're about to need it.
Keep walking until you hit the first Red Lock. The train stops, and a town appears on your right.

Step 3: Get the bank vault code and find Phantom Key 2
Exit the train and clear the zombies in the first town. One of them drops a code when it dies. The code is unique to your session, so there's no universal answer to look up. Pick it up immediately.
Head to the bank, which is the first building on the left side of the town. Enter the code into the vault inside. The vault opens and reveals Phantom Key 2. Take it back to the train and use it on the Red Lock to get moving again.
Walk through the newly opened door and continue toward the right end of the train. Another Red Lock is waiting, and another town stop is coming.
Step 4: Reach Stillwater Prison and pull the key from the rock
The train stops at Stillwater Prison. Load your Revolver, exit the train, and deal with the zombies outside. Head into the prison and go straight. You'll spot Phantom Key 3 stuck in a rock near the center of the area.
Here's the catch: the moment you pull that key out, Goliath spawns and the prison gate closes. Goliath is a heavily armored boss who fires projectiles. Two approaches work here:
- Fight Goliath: Keep your distance, aim for headshots with a rifle, and whittle him down. Effective but ammo-heavy.
- Escape through the hole: Just past the rock, there's a hole in the prison wall. Grab the key and run straight through it. Goliath is slow, so you can outpace him easily. This is the faster option.
Either way, get back to the train with the key and unlock the Red Lock.
Step 5: Reach the Phantom Train Conductor and claim the badge
After the third Red Lock opens, the train moves one final time. Walk all the way to the far right end of the train until you reach the last room. The Phantom Train Conductor is waiting inside.
Interact with him. He teleports you back to the spawn area, and the Hollow Quest badge is awarded automatically. Head to The Hollow hub to claim your 20 Tickets.
How do you get the Cowboy Hat of the Dead UGC?
The badge is the prerequisite. Once you have it, take the lift in The Hollow hub up to Floor 3. Find the Dead Rails area, which is identifiable by the room with a theater stage. Inside that room, interact with the platform on the right side of the teleport portal to Dead Rails. The Cowboy Hat of the Dead is yours to claim.

- Stock up on ammo in every train car. Running dry at Stillwater Prison is the most common reason players fail.
- The escape hole at Stillwater Prison is almost always faster than fighting Goliath unless your squad is well-armed.
