Search for the Needle on Roblox is a point-and-click game built around one deceptively simple task: dig a needle out of a haystack as fast as possible. The catch is that raw speed comes from smart currency management, the right tool order, and knowing which upgrades to prioritize before moving on. Get that wrong and you'll be poking around in hay for far longer than necessary.
How does Search for the Needle actually work?
When you load in, you'll see a lobby with multiple game queues. Pick solo or join other players, then step into the designated circle to start. Chapter One drops you in the Farmhouse, where the Farmer NPC hands you a quest: find a needle buried in a large pile of hay, with a $1,000 reward waiting on the other side.
The core loop is straightforward. Collect hay from the haystack, carry it to the friendly cow to sell it, then spend that currency on tools and upgrades in the barn shop. Early on you can only grab 25 pieces per run, so the opening minutes feel deliberately slow. That grind is the game teaching you why upgrades matter.
Every tool sits in the barn shop except the Drone, which you'll find on the side of the haystack area. Here's how they stack up:
Tool
How You Get It
Why It Matters
Upgrade Bag
Barn shop (currency)
Holds up to 500 hay at max upgrade
Infinite Bag
Barn shop (Robux)
Unlimited carry, no upgrades needed
Pitchfork
Barn shop (currency)
Scoops multiple pieces per swing
TNT / Dynamite
Barn shop (currency)
Second-best; blasts hundreds of hay per explosion
Vacuum
Barn shop (currency)
Best tool in the game at max upgrade
Drone
Next to the haystack
Costs 40 Gems; flies and collects passively
The Vacuum is the clear endgame tool. Fully upgraded, it pulls in a massive amount of hay per second and makes every other tool feel like a toy. The Dynamite is a strong second option while you're saving up, since each explosion clears large chunks at once. The Infinite Bag is a Robux purchase, so it's optional, but the Upgrade Bag maxed out at 500 hay capacity is perfectly viable without spending real money.

How to upgrade items in the right order
Upgrading is where most beginners lose time. The upgrade menu opens with the TAB key, and every tool has its own stat tree.
Start with your Hand upgrades first: Hold, Speed, and Grasp. These three directly increase how fast you move and how much you carry on every single run, which compounds into faster currency generation for everything else.
Once your Hand is solid, move to the Pitchfork and work through Cooldown, Hold, and Sweep in that order. Then shift focus to Dynamite, prioritizing Lucky Blast first, then Speed, then Power. When you finally reach the Vacuum, max out Power, Cooling, and Runtime to unlock its full potential.
The Drone is a passive income source worth upgrading when you have spare Gems. Focus on Speed, Grasp, and Capacity to make it collect more without you lifting a finger.
How to enter the Basement
Once you locate the needle and hand it to the Farmer NPC, don't expect a clean reward. The Farmer reveals the prize is in the basement, nudges you inside, and locks the hatch. Classic.
The Basement runs on the same core loop as the Farmhouse: collect hay, sell it, buy upgrades. What changes is the added layer of objectives you have to complete alongside finding the needle. To finish the Basement stage you need to find a key, solve 3 puzzles, and pull all the levers scattered around the room. The Basement is a step up in complexity, but the tools and upgrades you've already built carry over in value.
How to get pets and what do they do?
Two pets are available in Search for the Needle as of September 2026, both purchasable from the shop at the loading location.
Cow grants 5.5 speed, +0% hay value, and 20 grasp. Its main advantage is that it eats large amounts and sells hay without you needing to walk to the trough manually, which cuts down idle time on every run.
Dog grants 8 speed, 100 carry, and 10 grasp. The Dog fills its mouth and runs the load to the trough on its own. The higher raw speed and carry bonus make it appealing for players who want to move fast and haul more per trip.
Pet

Special Behavior
Cow
5.5
+0% hay value
20
Auto-sells without trough walk
Dog

10
Carries load to trough independently
The Dog edges out the Cow on raw numbers, but the Cow's auto-sell behavior has real value if you prefer a more passive style. Neither pet is a bad choice; it comes down to how you like to play.
Quick tips to find the needle faster
Max your Hand upgrades before buying any new tool.
Farm Gems passively from the haystack and save 40 for the Drone.
Don't buy the Infinite Bag unless you're comfortable spending Robux; the maxed Upgrade Bag handles the job.
In the Basement, tackle the key and levers as you farm so you're not scrambling at the end.
Pick up the Dog pet if speed is your priority; the Cow if you want passive auto-selling.
