Velgar is the first real gear check in RuneScape: Dragonwilds. He is Kuldra's poison general, the named dragon that closes out Bramblemead Valley, and the gate you have to pass before Fellhollow opens up. The fight is not the hardest in the game, but players who skip antipoison or show up with damaged gear will wipe fast and not understand why. Get the preparation right and Velgar falls cleanly. Skip it and you will spend healing food on poison damage before the real attacks even start.
How do you reach Velgar and trigger the fight?
Velgar waits at Velgar's Rise in the Fractured Plains. The Dragon Slayer quest routes you through a goblin castle, a swamp vault, and Garou territory before you arrive. None of that section is covered here since this guide focuses on the boss fight itself.
The fight does not trigger automatically. You have to craft the Challenge Horn and place it on the Dragonkin Altar at the top of Velgar's Rise. There is no accidental pull, which gives you full control over when the encounter begins.

What are the Challenge Horn ingredients?
Craft the horn at a smithing anvil using:
- 5 Bronze Bars
- 1 Dragon Tooth (harvested from giant dragon remains in Stormtouched Highlands, requires an iron pickaxe)
- 1 Bloodwood Sap (from Bloodblight Swamp, requires progression past starter woodcutting tools)
The Dragon Tooth does not come from a standard ore deposit. Look for the enormous dragon skull in the Stormtouched Highlands and inspect the exposed teeth directly. If the harvest prompt does not appear, the issue is your tool tier, not the location. Both ingredients naturally push you past the most basic starter equipment before you ever reach the fight, which is the game's way of confirming you are ready.
What gear and consumables do you need?
Power Level 4 iron is the expected minimum. Bronze weapons can technically land hits, but they leave no margin for missed evades. If you have the materials, bring the Anti-Dragon Shield as well.
The single most important consumable is antipoison. Brew it at a brewing cauldron using Harralander, Bittercap mushroom, and a clay vessel. Both herbs grow in Whispering Swamp. The protection window lasts 120 seconds, so do not drink it while you are still reorganizing your inventory back at base. Time it so the window covers the actual fight.
What are Velgar's attack patterns?
Velgar has three distinct attacks. Learning the tells for each one is more valuable than farming an extra gear tier.

Poison breath
Velgar exhales a blight cone in front of him. If antipoison is active, this becomes a positioning problem. If it is not active, this is a fight-ending problem. Sidestep the cone. The tell is visible before the cone releases, so you have a short window to move laterally. Melee players standing directly in front of the mouth will eat this attack repeatedly.
Claw slam and spike eruption
Velgar slams the ground, stunning anyone who did not block or evade, then spikes erupt and chase outward. Tempest Shield and a clean evade (the dedicated evade input on keyboard) are the counters here. The spike count increases after each flight phase, so this attack gets more demanding as the fight progresses. If you are getting stunned consistently, the problem is evade timing, not gear.
Poison meteors (liftoff phase)
Velgar takes off and rains blight rocks across random arena positions. Do not stand in the puddles they leave. This phase is where ranged and magic players have a structural advantage because the hitbox is airborne and melee cannot chase it effectively.
The resource to protect during liftoff is stamina. Do not drain the bar chasing Velgar or rolling during quiet moments before the phase begins. Once ground lines start arriving in quick succession, you need enough stamina to move through several attacks in a row, not just survive the first one. Dodging forward through an incoming line works better than running sideways after the danger has already spread across the floor. Stop attacking entirely, clear the sequence, then resume damage when Velgar lands.
What damage type works best against Velgar?
For magic players, Air spells produced the strongest direct single-target damage in testing, reaching 51-damage criticals without heavy gear farming. Water was noticeably weaker as direct damage. Fire had value from sustained pressure but moved Velgar's health bar more slowly than Air.
Melee is fully workable. The positioning difference is real though: staying too close means reading the bite and paw attacks correctly every time, and staying too far back encourages more ranged pressure from Velgar. A middle distance works best for magic, far enough to avoid close-range attacks but not so far that the fight becomes a constant ranged exchange.
How does co-op change the fight?
Split positions so the whole party does not share the same spike landing zone. Call the liftoff phase out loud so everyone looks up and stops attacking. Bring antipoison for every player, not just the one who remembered. If adds appear during the meteor phase, one player can peel for them while the rest maintain pressure on Velgar.
Friendly fire positioning also matters in co-op. A melee player standing beside Velgar and a magic player firing through the same space can create overlap that has nothing to do with the boss.
What do you get for killing Velgar?
After Velgar falls, open the quest-item tab to find Velgar's Head. The kill also drops the Tome of the Dragon Slayer, which awards 500 XP in Attack, Ranged, and Magic simultaneously. Take the head back to the Wise Old Man in Bramblemead to complete Dragon Slayer and unlock Fellhollow.
The kill also opens the Anti-Dragon Shield upgrade path through the Dragon Visage and Dragonblight Shield, so the loot has downstream value beyond the immediate quest reward.
Velgar is Kuldra's general, not the final boss. Treat the 500 XP tome as a combat bump, upgrade to steel, and continue through Fellhollow toward Dowdun Reach and Umbral Sands. For everything that comes next, the RuneScape: Dragonwilds strategy guides cover the full regional progression from here to the Scorned Wilderness raid.
Is Velgar harder than earlier Bramblemead content?
Yes, deliberately. He is the first real gear check in the game. Bramblemead content prepares you, but the iron floor and antipoison requirement are a step up from bone clubs and tannery leather. If Velgar's ordinary attacks are removing most of your health and your damage barely moves his bar, improve the setup. If you are consistently reaching the second half of the fight, repair, fix poison protection, and clean up liftoff movement before spending hours on another full equipment tier.
RuneScape: Dragonwilds is a survival action game built around exactly this kind of progression gate, and Velgar is the first place that becomes obvious. Clear him and the rest of Ashenfall opens up.
