Silver is the resource that separates players who can breathe underwater from those who can't. In Subnautica 2, you need it to craft the air tank, wiring kits, system chips, and dedicated cores, all of which feed into base construction and the Tadpole vehicle. The starting biome keeps it hidden deliberately, but there are two reliable spots close to the Lifepod that will stock you up fast.
What is silver used for in Subnautica 2?
Before heading out, it helps to know why silver is worth prioritizing. Silver goes into the air tank (more time underwater), wiring kits (used in the Sonic Resonator, Wakemaker, and other tools), system chips, and dedicated cores. That last category feeds directly into base facilities, so you will run out of silver faster than almost any other early resource.
There are two forms of silver to collect. Small Silver Ore nodes can be grabbed by hand from cave walls and floors. Larger Silver Outcrops require the Sonic Resonator to break open. Since the Sonic Resonator takes hours to unlock, this guide focuses on hand-collectible ore first.
Silver nodes are easy to miss because they only protrude slightly from cave walls. Slow down when you are inside any cave and scan the ceiling and walls carefully, not just the floor.

Where does silver spawn in Subnautica 2?
Silver generally spawns at depths of 30 meters or deeper. You will not find any in the shallow water near the Lifepod itself. The resource concentrates in cave networks, particularly those near the Old Habitat ruins, which sit roughly 350 to 400 meters north of the Lifepod depending on which source you reference. Eurogamer's guide notes that silver deposits tend to appear in caves marked by Dangling Saps, alongside unnamed green and pink flowers that frequently co-locate with silver and copper.
Best silver farming spots near the Lifepod
Spot 1: The Jelly Lei cave (200 meters north)
This is the fastest silver you can grab without completing any story objectives. Head directly north from the Lifepod, swim past the first Coral Domes, and keep going until you are roughly 200 meters out. Look for an overhang with purple Jelly Lei hanging over a downward-sloping cave entrance.
Drop into that cave and the walls are lined with silver nodes. For a cave this close to the Lifepod, the yield is surprisingly high. PC Gamer's guide recommends bringing a portable locker to carry extra ore back to base, and there is one available in the cave directly beneath the Lifepod if you have not found it yet.
Spot 2: The Old Habitat cave (350-400 meters north)
The second farming spot sits just to the right of the Old Habitat colony ruins. You will visit this area during a story mission to find a black box, but nothing stops you from swimming there earlier if you need silver urgently.
From the Old Habitat, look for a large cave entrance on the right side. Follow the glowing green plants on the walls downward. At the deepest section, where bright blue bulbs grow out of the ground, silver deposits cover the walls and ceiling. IGN notes that the nodes here are small and easy to swim past, so reduce your speed when you reach the blue-bulb section.
Spot 3: Necrolei Fields (silver ore, 370 meters north/northwest)
GameSpot's guide identifies the Necrolei Fields as another reliable early source. This area sits roughly 370 meters north/northwest of the Lifepod, just above the Wu "Wu" Lianghai marker on your HUD. The pink and blue plant life makes it easy to spot from a distance. Silver ore runs along the ground where the Necrolei grow and up the cliff walls surrounding the area.
Spot 4: Stalagmite area (Silver Outcrops, 200 meters southeast)
Once you have the Sonic Resonator, head 200 meters southeast of the Lifepod to the stalagmite formation. GameSpot confirms that Chap's Blackbox Signal is near this location, so you will pass through it during normal progression. Both the ground near the stalagmites and the surrounding caves contain Silver Outcrops ready to mine.

How to use the Scanner Station to find silver
Eurogamer's guide points out a tool that most players overlook early on: the Scanner Station. Build one inside your base and interact with it to select Silver from the resource list. The station generates a 3D map showing every silver deposit within a 300-meter radius of your base, and selecting any deposit adds a waypoint to your HUD.
If silver does not appear in the Scanner Station's list, there is none within 300 meters. The fix is straightforward: swim 300 meters in a new direction, drop a temporary base with a new Scanner Station, and search from there. Eurogamer notes this situation is unlikely given how common silver is, but it can happen if you have already cleared nearby deposits.
The Scanner Station tracks resources relative to your base location, not your current position. If you are farming far from home, build a secondary base to extend your tracking range.
What to craft with silver first
With silver in hand, the priority order matters. The air tank upgrade is the most immediate need since it extends your dive time and makes every subsequent resource run easier. After that, wiring kits open up the Sonic Resonator and Wakemaker, both of which accelerate progression significantly.
For a broader look at resource priorities, check out our guide on best locations to farm silver for additional context on where silver fits into the early crafting chain. Silver is also closely tied to other materials you will need at the same time. If you are running low on other resources during your cave runs, our guides on how to find and farm salt fast and where to find quartz cover two materials that share some of the same cave networks.
Silver looks nearly identical to Titanium on cave walls. Both share similar grey-white coloring and grow in the same formations. If you think you found Titanium but the deposit feels slightly different, check your inventory: you may have picked up silver by accident, which is a good accident to have.
For everything else you need to get started, the full Subnautica 2 guide collection covers resources, blueprints, and progression from early access forward. Subnautica 2 is one of the standout survival games of 2026, and silver is the resource that unlocks most of what makes the mid-game interesting.
