The Ocarina of Time remake has six Great Fairy Fountains, and the fairies now charge Rupees for their gifts. Here's where each one is, what she gives and what she costs.
Key takeaways
- There are six Great Fairy Fountains, the same number as the original. A few fountains moved slightly, but you reach them the same way.
- Great Fairies are no longer free. They charge Rupees, up to 500.
- Din's Fire and the Spin Attack have swapped fountains. Din's Fire now comes from the Death Mountain fairy, and the Spin Attack from the one by Hyrule Castle.
- You still summon each fairy by playing Zelda's Lullaby on the Triforce symbol.
- The first fairy you visit has to be the Death Mountain or Hyrule Castle one, or the others won't appear.

How much do Great Fairies cost in the remake?
Up to 500 Rupees. In the original, every fairy was free.
The fee rises with each fairy you meet, so each one asks for more Rupees than the last. If you visit them in the usual order, the prices in the table are what you'll pay. The fountain outside Ganondorf's Castle is the 500 Rupee one, so start saving well before the end of the game.
I remember when it was gaming magazines where you got tips and tricks. Back then the fairies were free, so there was nothing to save up for. Paying now is fair. I can see why people find it annoying, but it gives you a goal and something to spend Rupees on, so you're not just collecting them for the sake of having all the Rupees.
Which Great Fairy should you visit first?
Death Mountain. Go there straight after Dodongo's Cavern, when you're at the summit anyway, and pay the toll for Din's Fire. This fairy also gives you the Magic Meter, which you need for every spell after it.
There's a new rule here. Your first fairy has to be either the Death Mountain one or the Hyrule Castle one. If you try another fountain first, playing Zelda's Lullaby won't make her appear. Death Mountain is the safe pick, because that's the fairy that gives you the Magic Meter.
Din's Fire also gets used straight away. Use it to light the torches in Zora's Domain for a Heart Piece.
What does each Great Fairy upgrade do?
Each fairy gives you something different, and the spells all run on your Magic Meter.
- Din's Fire: a ring of fire bursts out around Link. It hits every enemy close to you, and it lights torches you can't reach, like the ones in Zora's Domain. In the remake it plays out in real time.
- Spin Attack: charge your sword, then let go to spin and hit everything around you. It's the best answer when you're surrounded, and in the remake the charged spin no longer costs magic.
- Farore's Wind: sets a warp point inside a dungeon. Cast it again later and you can jump straight back to that spot, which saves walking back through rooms you've already cleared.
- Magic Meter upgrade: doubles your Magic Meter, so you can cast more spells and fire more magic arrows before you need to refill.
- Nayru's Love: a crystal barrier that stops you taking damage for a short time. It's handy for the last few bosses.
- The final fairy: halves the damage you take for the rest of the game.
If you're short on Rupees, get the Magic Meter upgrade before Nayru's Love. Every spell runs on magic, so the bigger meter makes the others last longer.
What changed from the original?
Quite a bit, for six fountains.
- They cost Rupees. The original fairies gave everything away.
- Din's Fire and the Spin Attack swapped. On the N64, the Magic Meter and the magic Spin Attack came from the Death Mountain summit, and Din's Fire from the path to Hyrule Castle. In the remake, Din's Fire is at Death Mountain and the Spin Attack is at Hyrule Castle.
- The Spin Attack doesn't use magic. A charged Spin Attack no longer drains your Magic Meter, and the upgraded spin costs none at all.
- Din's Fire plays out in real time. It no longer freezes the world when you cast it.
- Some fountains moved a little. The routes in are mostly the same.
Nayru's Love is still in. The final fairy still halves your damage, the upgrade the N64 version called Defensive Power. For everything else that's new, see our list of remake changes.
The spell I went for back then was Farore's Wind. Seeing the name again brought it back.
How do you afford the Great Fairy upgrades?
Bigger wallets help. The starting wallet holds 200 Rupees, up from 99, and every upgrade holds more than before.
Gold Skulltulas pay for most of it. The 10-token reward is the Adult's Wallet and the 30-token reward is the Giant's Wallet. The Giant's Wallet holds 1,000 Rupees on Switch 2, and the 500 fee needs the Giant's Wallet. Our Gold Skulltula guide has the full list.
A few other Rupee sources:
- Big Poes: The Poe Collector pays 30 Rupees for each one.
- Running Man: He now gives you a Gold Rupee for the Bunny Hood.
- 100 Gold Skulltulas: This reward pays 200 Rupees, and you can collect it again.
What are the regular Fairy Fountains?
There are eight smaller Fairy Fountains on top of the six Great Fairies. They don't give upgrades. They're pools of fairies that heal you, and you can catch one in a bottle. A bottled fairy brings you back with full hearts if you fall.
The Great Fairy's laugh stuck with me from watching people 100% Ocarina of Time in recent years, more than from my childhood.
