There are 36 Pieces of Heart in the Ocarina of Time remake, the same count as the original, but several have moved. Here's where to find every one of them.
Key takeaways
- The remake has 36 Pieces of Heart, not counting the Heart Containers you get from bosses.
- Four pieces make one heart, so all 36 add nine hearts. Your maximum is 20 hearts.
- Some pieces moved. The Ice Cavern piece is gone, and there are new ones in Hyrule Field and Death Mountain Crater.
- Two of the new pieces are sold by Business Scrubs for 100 Rupees each, so bring cash.
- Your map now shows how many Heart Pieces are left in each region, which makes the cleanup much easier.
How many Heart Pieces are in the Ocarina of Time remake?
36, and that number doesn't include the eight boss Heart Containers. You start with three hearts, the bosses give you eight more, and the 36 pieces give you nine. That's 20. If you want a route that picks up every collectible in one pass, a minimalist 100% walkthrough is a good companion to this list, and there's a side-by-side Switch 2 and N64 Heart Piece list if you want to compare against the original.
The original had 36 as well. I guarantee you I never 100%ed it though. This time I'd be going for all 36, full completionist. Now that the internet's there to help, I'm a much more likely candidate to 100% things than when it was: do you have an older brother that's beaten the game? No? Then you're never going to know where everything is.
What changed from the original?
The total is the same, but not every piece is where you remember it. Several are in brand new locations.
The main changes:
- The Ice Cavern piece is gone. The original had a piece in the Ice Cavern behind red ice. In the remake it has effectively moved to a new Business Scrub in Death Mountain Crater.
- Hyrule Field is different. The original had a Business Scrub selling a piece for 10 Rupees and an underwater grotto piece. The remake has a password Business Scrub that charges 100 Rupees, and a chest you can only open by visiting it in both time periods.
- One graveyard piece is easier. The grave piece moved two tombs to the left and no longer needs the Sun's Song.
- You pick pieces up with A now. Picking one up also restores your magic, and the Boomerang and Hookshot can't grab them.
Navi's new Fairy Thoughts, notes written on walls and trees, also hint at some of the new spots. For the rest of what's new, see our list of remake changes.
Where are the Heart Pieces you can get as young Link?
These are in roughly the order you can collect them.
- Lon Lon Ranch: In the crumbling stone building in the back corner, move the crates away from the wall and crawl through the gap.
- Lost Woods, Skull Kids game: Go right from the Kokiri Forest entrance, drop down by the target, stand on the stump and copy the two Skull Kids' tunes. The notes now show on screen and you don't have to match the rhythm, so it's easier than it was.
- Lost Woods, Saria's Song: Go left from the Kokiri entrance and play Saria's Song on the stump in front of the lone Skull Kid. Our songs guide has the input.
- Graveyard, Dampe's dig: At night, pay Dampe 10 Rupees to dig. The piece is random. If he says the spot is hard, pay again. The hard spot costs 5 more Rupees, and that's where the piece is.
- Graveyard, tombstone: Pull back a grave in the right-hand column and drop into the hole for a chest. If the first grave you try is empty, work through the rest of that column.
- Goron City vase: Light the torches around the big vase on the bottom floor with a Deku Stick, then drop a lit bomb into the spinning vase from above.
- Death Mountain Crater, netting: Go in at full health, run left and climb down the netting.
- Death Mountain Crater, Business Scrub: This one is new. Head left and down as young Link to find a Business Scrub who sells a piece for 100 Rupees. Stun him with a Deku Nut or reflect his shot with the Deku Shield.
- Kakariko rooftop: Ride Kaepora Gaebora down from Death Mountain. He drops you on a roof, and the piece is on the roof below, so just look down.
- Kakariko, man on the roof: As a kid, glide with a Cucco to the blue-roofed house, or come back later with the Hookshot. Either way, the man gives you a piece.
- Bombchu Bowling Alley: Clear all three difficulty levels.
- Castle Town, Richard the dog: At night, find the white dog and walk it back to the woman by the entrance.
- Gerudo Valley chest: Carry the Cucco to the left of the bridge and glide across to the chest.
- Gerudo Valley waterfall: Glide down towards the waterfall and follow the steps behind it.
- Fishing Pond: Catch a big fish as young Link. Go for the biggest fish you can see.
- Zora's River, first platform: Use a Cucco to reach the vines, take the Cucco from the grotto up top and glide to the raised platform.
- Zora's River, upstream ledge: Take a Cucco to the end of the river and glide back to the ledge.
- Zora's Domain torches: Light every torch to make a chest appear. Din's Fire is the quick way to do it.
- Frogs, Song of Storms: Play the Song of Storms to the frogs on Zora's River.
- Frogs minigame: Make all five frogs grow, then hit the notes as each one lights up. The colours map to L, R, Y, X and A.
- Treasure Chest game: At night in Castle Town, wear the Lenses of Truth to see which chest has the key, five rooms in a row.
- Hyrule Field, password Scrub: Bomb the patch right of the Castle Town drawbridge. As an adult, read the Fairy Thought on the nearby tree for the password, "Sell somethin', will ya?". Then come back as young Link and buy the piece for 100 Rupees.
- Hyrule Field, empty chest: Under the rock arch near Gerudo Valley, find the chest open and read the note as an adult. Come back as young Link and it's closed, with the piece inside.
Where are the Heart Pieces you get as adult Link?
- Graveyard bean plant: Plant a Magic Bean as a kid, then ride the plant as an adult.
- Windmill: After winning the Hookshot in Dampe's race, the exit drops you in the windmill. Ride the platform to the piece.
- Dampe's race: Beat it in under a minute. The new sprint makes this much easier than it used to be.
- Lakeside Laboratory roof: Ride the bean plant at Lake Hylia to the lab roof.
- Lakeside Laboratory tank: Get the Golden Scale by beating the fishing record as an adult, then touch the bottom of the lab's dive tank.
- House of Skulltula: The 50-token reward is a piece. Our Gold Skulltula guide has all 100.
- Death Mountain Trail bean: Ride the plant outside Dodongo's Cavern to the ledge above it.
- Death Mountain Crater bean: Warp in as a kid with the Bolero of Fire and plant a bean by the warp, then ride it as an adult.
- Zora's Fountain ice: Hop across the ice platforms in the north-east corner.
- Zora's Fountain floor: After the Ice Cavern, sink to the bottom with the Iron Boots.
- Gerudo Fortress roof: Get to the back rooftops and use the Longshot to reach the chest. Summon the scarecrow to cross the gap.
- Horseback Archery: Score 1,000 points. Ten bullseyes does it.
- Desert Colossus bean: Plant a bean by the Spirit Temple as a kid, then ride the plant as an adult.
Which Heart Pieces are easiest to miss?
The two time-travel pieces in Hyrule Field. You have to find each one empty or sold out as an adult first, then come back as a kid.
The Death Mountain Crater Scrub is the other one. It only works as young Link, and the crater burns your hearts the whole time you're in there. Leave it until you have more hearts.
The bean pieces need planning too. You buy the beans as a kid from the salesman on Zora's River, plant them in soft soil, and ride the plants seven years later. Buy as many beans as you can early.
Which ones were a pain in the original? Honestly, all of them. I kind of just sucked, not gonna lie. Me and my brother would struggle through it together.
How do you track which Heart Pieces you're missing?
The remake does it for you. You can now see how many Heart Pieces and Gold Skulltulas you've collected in each region, and the world map shows how many are left. That alone is a big help over the original. A lot of the complaints about the remake are that some of it is more accessible than it was before, and I can see how for the nostalgia-bait crowd that's a bad thing. But it makes sense that things get more accessible, so it's a game that's playable in this world. If it tells me how many hearts are in each region, good.
