The Bog is where Well Dweller stops holding your hand. Routes branch off in three directions, golden gates block promising paths, and Queen's Castle looms in the background demanding feathers you don't have yet. The goal here is straightforward: meet Ilda, check the Queen's Castle gate, defeat the Swarm boss, then unlock Climb and Tent Travel before heading into The Drains.
What do you actually do in The Bog?
The Bog sits between Night Garden and The Drains in the progression order, and it serves as the first region that deliberately shows you more than you can finish. You arrive with the Slingshot and Flaming Vessel already in hand, which opens several routes, but taller walls and high platforms make it clear that not everything here is meant for this visit.
The core sequence to focus on: meet Ilda at her camp, check the Queen's Castle gate, work through the lower Bog route, defeat the Swarm, collect the Climb ability, then backtrack to unlock Tent Travel near Night Garden before continuing into The Drains.
Trinkets worth grabbing along the way
Before the major story beats, two trinkets are worth collecting as you move through the opening Bog rooms.
The Hair Pin is the first. Cross the body of water by jumping over the two white eggs, which creates a solid path and clears the blockage on the left side. The Hair Pin's effect is simple: go 8 seconds without attacking and your next hit deals double damage. It rewards patience more than aggression, but nothing in The Bog requires you to build around it.
The Golden Ticket Needle sits inside the Burial Vault section. Drop down from a platform and head right, navigating over spiked platforms to reach the dead end where it waits. Its effect activates when you drop below 25% health, surrounding you with a circle of spikes. Useful in a pinch, but the Bog's bigger challenge is the Swarm fight, not the standard enemies.
The Scrap of Fabric Trinket is another pickup that slightly increases attack damage while you're airborne. Given how much of the Swarm fight involves staying grounded, this one matters more in later areas.

Meeting Ilda and the campfire sequence
Ilda appears in The Bog surrounded by hostile bees. Use your matchstick to scatter them, then talk to her. She's gathering firewood and needs Glimmer's fire to light the camp, which triggers the camping sequence and unlocks the A Warm Fire achievement.
After the night, Ilda moves to the tent and sets up a map station with two functions. The first map points out major destinations across the kingdom when you're unsure which large objective to pursue next. The second tracks collectibles in rooms you've already visited, so a marker on the map doesn't mean the item is currently reachable, only that you passed through that room.
Don't turn the new map into a full collectible sweep right now. The Bog has more pressing things ahead.

Queen's Castle needs 7 Golden Feathers
One Bog branch reaches the base of Queen's Castle earlier than you'd expect. Use the intercom at the gate and the guard explains the situation: the Queen wants 7 Golden Feathers for her dress, and entry requires all seven. There's no local switch or combat room that bypasses this.
Note the requirement and move on. The golden gates scattered through The Bog are a separate system from the Queen's Castle entrance, and the key for those arrives through a different objective later in the game.
How do you defeat the Swarm?
The Swarm is the Bog's major boss fight and the second boss in Well Dweller's progression, following the Groundskeeper from Night Garden. The fight has three distinct phases.
Phase one involves the Swarm flying above you, throwing projectiles and surrounding itself with an attack barrier. Attack upward or jump to hit it in midair. When waves of bugs fly in from the right side of the screen, jump over them using the bubbles scattered around the arena for extra height.
Phase two begins just before the Swarm reaches half health. The bugs fly to the background, retrieve a skull, and start controlling it. You can now target the skull directly, which is a larger and easier hit than the bugs themselves. The skull adds a ground pound that creates a shockwave, so watch for that and dodge accordingly.
Phase three kicks in at around a quarter of the Swarm's health remaining. The music speeds up and the attacks intensify. Single bugs begin appearing at ground level from both sides, flying straight at you. Slide dodge or jump over them depending on what else is happening in the arena at that moment.

Between larger attacks, use normal hits to refill the Flaming Vessel and throw it when the arena gives you enough room to finish the animation safely. The fight rewards controlled movement over aggressive jumping.
Defeating the Swarm awards the Buggy Business achievement.
| Phase | Trigger | Key Attack | Counter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phase 1 | Fight start | Projectile barrier + bug waves | Jump on bubbles, attack upward |
| Phase 2 | Just below 50% HP | Skull ground pound shockwave | Target the skull, dodge shockwave |
| Phase 3 | Around 25% HP | Ground-level bugs from both sides | Slide or jump depending on context |
How do you unlock Climb?
After the Swarm goes down, head right to the bird's nest and collect the ability egg inside. This teaches Glimmer Climb.
Hold jump while pressing against a wall to start climbing. Both clinging and climbing consume stamina, and that stamina refills when you reach solid ground. The important thing to know about tall shafts: wall jumping doesn't consume stamina, so alternating between two walls gives you far more vertical range than trying to crawl up a single surface uninterrupted.
Climb immediately opens vertical connections throughout The Bog and also makes several Night Garden routes feel obvious in retrospect.
Unlocking Tent Travel
With Climb active, use the new wall routes to work back toward Night Garden. This return trip is part of progression, not a detour. The path brings Glimmer to a safe tent near the Night Garden side of the kingdom where Tent Travel unlocks.
From this point, any safe tent you've previously discovered becomes a fast travel destination. Open the map and select the tent you want. The game also expands the main objective here: search the kingdom for your missing family and collect the Golden Feathers.
Tent Travel changes how you approach blocked routes. Leave anything that requires an ability you don't have, push forward somewhere else, and return later without repeating the full journey.

Some Bog routes stay blocked
Climb doesn't make every remaining marker in The Bog reachable. A few high exits and side passages still need movement abilities you haven't earned yet. If Climb gets you noticeably closer but the final crossing has no sensible landing, there's nothing to force here.
The Bog stays relevant later in the game, particularly during objectives that send you back for gated pickups. Those return trips are much faster once Tent Travel and later movement tools are available. For now, check the Well Dweller guides collection if you want to track down specific collectibles or plan your feather route.
Where to go after The Bog
With Climb and Tent Travel both unlocked, the next destination is The Drains. Wind Ride is obtained there, not in The Bog, so if that's the ability you're looking for, keep moving. The Drains introduces Willow, wind currents, a broken elevator, and a search for 3 Elevator Parts. Repairing that elevator leads to the Lady of the Drains and another Golden Feather.
Well Dweller is one of the stronger recent entries in indie games that takes the Metroidvania formula seriously, and The Bog is where that structure starts to click. The branching paths that seem overwhelming on first arrival make much more sense once Tent Travel removes the pressure to finish everything in one pass.
