Graven Valley is one of the more story-heavy areas in Well Dweller, Kyle Thompson's dark fairy-tale Metroidvania where you play as Glimmer, a small bird armed with a burning matchstick. The local boss, Lida the Terrible, is the fourth named encounter in the game's roster of 13, and she sits at the center of a witch-burning ceremony you have to crash before you can fight her. She is not the hardest boss in the game, but her homing projectiles and a mid-fight arena change catch players off guard the first time. Here is everything you need to get through her cleanly.
How do you reach Lida the Terrible in Graven Valley?
Getting to the fight takes more legwork than most bosses in the game. Graven Valley is the grey zone on the world map, accessible from the Hunter's Cabin after progressing through The Drains. The zone also connects to Midnight Drench, which routes toward the Desiccated Castle, so it sits at a meaningful crossroads in the mid-game.
When you first arrive, the area has several objectives to clear before the boss becomes accessible. You will collect the Broken Bell Trinket, grab a Workshop Token, and work your way through a series of bell-activated platforms that create temporary paths across the zone. The bells are hit with your matchstick and produce a brief window to cross before the platforms vanish, so keep moving.

The key gate is the Ticketer. You cannot enter the execution ceremony without a ticket, and the Ticketer is located deeper into the zone after ascending through several platform sections with hanging bells. Once you have the ticket, fast travel back to the Gravenvalley tent, drop down to the Announcer, show him your ticket, and head inside.
Inside the ceremony area, hit the rope with your matchstick to free the two prisoners. That action triggers Lida the Terrible to spawn.
What trinkets should you equip for this fight?
The tent in Graven Valley lets you access the cauldron for trinket management. Two trinkets are worth considering here.
| Trinket | Effect | Best Use Case |
|---|---|---|
| Fish Hook | Improves vessel refill rate at low health | Survival during phase two |
| Cracked Marble | Slightly increases damage at full health | Aggressive phase one openers |
The Cracked Marble trinket is found in Graven Valley itself, requiring the Wind Ride ability to reach. It rewards clean play but punishes taking hits. Fish Hook is the safer pick if you are still learning the fight. Trinkets can be upgraded for a cost, and an upgraded trinket occupies the same number of slots as before, so upgrading is always worth doing if you have the resources.
How does the Lida the Terrible boss fight work?
Lida the Terrible has two distinct phases separated by a clear environmental shift at roughly 50% health.

Phase one: projectiles and homing knives
Lida opens by throwing standard projectiles, then transitions into homing knives. The homing knives are the part that trips up most players. They track your position, so standing still is not an option. The key is understanding their movement arc rather than panicking and burning through your dodge slide cooldown.
Your dodge slide has a cooldown, so you cannot chain slides indefinitely. Wait for Lida to commit to an attack, slide or jump out of range, then move back in for a short hit window. Do not try to chain matchstick hits while standing next to her. Short bursts of melee between attacks are more reliable than extended combos.
When closing the distance feels risky, throw the matchstick as a projectile instead. It deals damage from range and keeps you out of the homing knife patterns.
Phase two: table, spikes, and falling cleavers
At around the halfway point, Lida raises a table in the center of the arena and spikes emerge on both sides. This compresses the fighting space significantly. Two new attack patterns replace the phase one kit.
Falling cleavers drop in sets of three, but there is a gap in the middle of each set. The catch is that they fall fast, so you need to read the pattern and position yourself in the gap before they land rather than reacting after. Getting caught flat-footed here deals heavy damage.
Cone-shaped knife drops also appear. The knives fall in a cone formation, and the correct dodge is toward the point of the cone, not away from it. Moving toward the tip of the cone puts you in the narrowest part of the spread, which is the safest gap.
With the reduced space, the table itself becomes your best positioning tool. Staying on top of the table lets you deal continuous damage while keeping your options open for dodging downward if needed. Slide through attacks when possible and keep your combos short.
What do you get for beating Lida the Terrible?
After the fight, head left from the boss arena. You will find Egbert in the room there. Collecting him unlocks the "Littlest Bird" achievement and trophy. Egbert is the first of your siblings you rescue in the game, and once collected, family members appear inside your save tent.
There are 4 more siblings to find after Egbert, so this is the start of a longer thread that runs through the rest of the game.
Where does Graven Valley fit in the full boss roster?
Well Dweller has 13 bosses total across its 15 biomes. Lida sits in the middle of the roster, not among the early fights and not among the late-game encounters. For context on where you are in the run, the confirmed bookends are The Groundskeeper first (Night Garden) and The Queen last (Queen's Castle), with The Swarm as the second confirmed fight in The Bog.
For a broader look at every encounter in the game, the Well Dweller guides collection covers all 13 bosses with individual breakdowns.
Well Dweller is part of a strong wave of indie games that have pushed the Metroidvania genre forward in recent years, and Thompson's track record with Crypt Custodian and Islets makes the boss design here feel deliberate rather than arbitrary. Lida is a fair fight once you understand the phase two geometry. The cone dodge in particular is counterintuitive on first contact but becomes readable after one or two attempts.
