Well Dweller is the new Metroidvania from Kyle Thompson, the developer behind Crypt Custodian and Islets, and it packs a roster of 13 bosses across its world. The Starsinger is the boss waiting for you in The Lookout Tower, the teal-coloured area you'll spot on your map. It's a projectile-heavy fight with a second phase that ramps up the pressure fast, but once you understand what each attack is doing, the whole encounter becomes manageable.

What are the Starsinger's health values?

Before getting into the attack breakdown, it helps to know what you're working with. The Starsinger starts with 540 HP on Easy and 570 HP on Normal and Hard. The second phase kicks in at 225 HP or below on Easy, or 285 HP or below on Normal and Hard. That transition isn't instant, so don't panic when you hit that threshold and the boss pauses briefly before escalating.

How do the Starsinger's attacks work?

The Starsinger leans heavily on projectile spam. Most of its patterns mix standard throws with the black feather volleys that define the fight.

Projectile patterns and black feathers

The boss throws projectiles in varying directions and timings throughout the fight. None of these follow a completely predictable arc every time, so staying mobile is the baseline requirement. The black feathers are a separate mechanic: they don't actively track your position, but they spread across the arena in ways that punish standing still.

Keep circling the arena. The moment you stop to focus on one threat, the other one clips you.

The ground pound

Here's the attack that catches most players off guard. While you're watching the projectiles and feathers, the Starsinger will occasionally throw in a ground pound. It signals that you need to split your attention rather than tunnel-visioning on the ranged threats. When you see the boss commit to a downward move, get clear of the impact zone and reset your position.

The black feather circle (the fight's hardest pattern)

This is the move that defines the encounter. The Starsinger signals it with a pink flash, then generates a ring of black feathers around your current position. Those feathers close in and form a circle on the ground where you were standing.

The way out is straightforward once you know it: use your dodge slide to enter the circle, then immediately use the dodge slide again to exit through the other side. Two slides, in and out. Trying to jump over it or run around the outside doesn't work reliably. Commit to the slide-through.

How does the second phase change things?

Once the Starsinger hits its phase threshold, it gets visibly angrier, with a more red-faced appearance that signals the escalation. The attack intensity increases across the board: more projectiles, tighter timings, and the black feather patterns come faster. The core strategies don't change, but the margin for error shrinks.

The flame vessel is your primary damage tool here. Keep using it consistently rather than saving it. This isn't a fight where you want to hold resources.

What trinkets should you equip before this fight?

Trinket loadout matters more in this fight than in most. After testing different setups against the Starsinger's projectile density, one trinket stands out: the one that grants a brief period of invulnerability after using an oil flask. Oil flasks are already your healing option, so getting a few frames of invincibility on top of the heal turns a desperate recovery into a safe reset.

If you're struggling with the second phase in particular, check your trinket slots before retrying. A single loadout swap can turn a wall into a clean clear.

What do you earn for defeating the Starsinger?

Beating the Starsinger unlocks the "Song of the Stars" achievement and trophy. It's one of several boss-specific achievements in Well Dweller, with the full roster including rewards for the Silver Doll, the Gravedigger, the Shrine of the Seven Sons, the Lady of the Drains, and the Swarm, among others.

For more help with the game's other encounters and collectibles, the full Well Dweller guides collection covers every boss and area. Well Dweller is one of the stronger indie games to come out of September 2026, and the boss design holds up across the full roster.
