The Docks area throws one of Well Dweller's more aggressive bosses at you before you ever set foot in The Depths. The Creature from the Deep guards the submarine vehicle you need to progress, so there's no going around it. The good news: this fight rewards movement over memorization, and once you understand its three core attack types, it stops being a wall and starts being a speed bump.
Where do you find the Creature from the Deep?
The boss is located in The Docks, the brown-colored region on your map. You cannot access The Depths or the water vessel until you take this fight. Head through the area until the encounter triggers at the dock itself.
What attacks does the Creature from the Deep use?
The boss fights with a swordfish sword and builds its entire moveset around that weapon. Spend the first few seconds watching rather than swinging. Three patterns repeat throughout the fight:
- Aerial projectiles launched upward from the sword, which arc back down toward Glimmer
- Ground shockwaves sent across the floor in both directions
- Side-to-side charges where the boss rushes across the full width of the arena
None of these are especially hard to read once you've seen them once. The danger comes from the boss chaining them quickly and catching you mid-recovery if you're standing still.

Movement is your defense
This fight punishes players who plant their feet and trade hits. Keep Glimmer moving at all times. Use your full toolkit: slide, hover, and jump are all useful here depending on the incoming attack. The hover specifically trivializes the ground shockwave, so burn it freely on those.
For the charge attack, time a slide to pass through or a jump to clear the boss entirely. Don't try to tank it.
When to deal damage
Attack windows open up right after the boss finishes any of its three moves. The recovery animation is short, so commit to two or three hits with your matchstick and then back off. Don't get greedy chasing a fourth hit.
Flaming Vessels are the most efficient damage source here. You can throw them from a safe distance during the recovery window without closing the gap, which matters when the boss is being especially aggressive.

Check your trinket loadout before entering
If the fight is giving you trouble, exit the area and review your trinket loadout. This is one of those bosses where a poorly optimized set of trinkets makes the fight feel harder than it actually is. Equip anything that boosts survivability or projectile damage before re-entering.
| Attack | Counter | Ability to use |
|---|---|---|
| Aerial projectiles | Reposition laterally | Jump or slide |
| Ground shockwave | Clear the wave entirely | Hover |
| Side-to-side charge | Pass through or over | Slide or jump |
| General aggression | Attack during recovery | Matchstick or Flaming Vessel |
What do you unlock after defeating the Creature from the Deep?
Taking down this boss rewards you with the "Into the Deep" achievement and trophy. More practically, it unlocks the water vessel and opens up The Depths as the next major area. You'll also rescue the crew member of the Barge, which triggers the next story beat.
From The Docks tent, a few steps right and down leads to the water vessel entry point. Inside The Depths, you'll pick up the Torpedo ability for your vessel and eventually face The Colony, the boss that drops the Endless Climb ability.
What comes after The Depths?
Beating The Colony in The Depths frees two of Glimmer's siblings, Thistle and Thimble, and earns the Endless Climb ability, which gives unlimited stamina while climbing walls. That ability then opens up previously unreachable paths in the Autumn Forest, which leads toward the Dollmaker's House and its own boss fight.
The Creature from the Deep is the gate between the early-game areas and the more complex underwater and post-game content, so clearing it cleanly sets you up for everything that follows.
