The Foothills biome is where Windrose stops holding your hand. Enemies hit harder, resources are more spread out, and you need an iron pickaxe before you can properly farm the area. The good news: Foothills is packed with materials that unlock some of the game's best crafting recipes, from gunpowder to tanned leather and fishing rods. This guide covers every discovery, where to find it, what it unlocks, and the one major quest that gates your access to the next biome.
danger
The Foothills biome unlocks after completing some of the starting quests. You cannot access it from the very beginning of the game.
How do you unlock the Foothills biome?
The Foothills biome becomes available after completing certain early quests in Windrose. The biome sits between the starting area and the Cursed Swamp, which you unlock by defeating the boss at the end of the Foothills main quest. Expect pirates, wolves, and mountain goats as the primary threats here. None of them are trivial, but with iron-tier gear you can handle the region without too much trouble.

What are all the key discoveries in Foothills?
Key discoveries are the most impactful finds in the biome. They unlock entire crafting stations and recipe categories, so getting them early makes a real difference.
Foothills Iron Ore is the most time-sensitive of these. You need it to craft an iron pickaxe, which in turn lets you mine more efficiently across the whole biome. Prioritize it first.
info
Divi-Divi trees drop both Hardwood and Tree Bark, so chopping them down gives you two key discoveries at once. Clear every stump you see.
What are the major discoveries and where do they drop?
Major discoveries are mid-tier finds tied to enemy drops, harvesting, and environmental sources. Several of them feed directly into consumables and elixirs.
Sulfur is the standout here. Homemade Gunpowder is a crafting ingredient you will need repeatedly, and Sulfur Deposits are described as common across the biome, so farm them whenever you pass one. The wolf and goat drops (Wolf Fang and Bezoar) are worth grinding specifically because the Elixir of Precision and Elixir of Concentration are useful consumables for tougher fights.
warning
Wolves and mountain goats in Foothills are more dangerous than they look. Clear them with ranged attacks when possible, especially the Alpha Wolf that drops the Wolf Head trophy.

What are the other discoveries in Foothills?
These are secondary finds with fewer crafting applications but still worth collecting for completeness and specific recipes.
One point worth flagging: the two sources differ slightly on Aloe Leaf. Deltia's Gaming lists it as coming from Bushes, while Destructoid attributes it to the Plague Crocodile. The Plague Crocodile source appears more specific and may reflect a more reliable drop method, but both could be valid. Check both if you are farming it.
info
Salt drops from both standard Crocodiles and the Plague variant, so you do not need to hunt specifically for the elite version to stock up.
The Needle in a Haystack quest: how does it end?
The Foothills biome has one major quest: Needle in a Haystack. The objective is tracking down Israel Hands, and completing it rewards you with Charon's Obol. Defeating Israel Hands also unlocks access to the Cursed Swamp biome, which is the next region in Windrose's progression. This is the only main quest tied to Foothills, so it acts as the biome's natural endpoint.
