Windrose Guide: How to Complete Fifteen Men on a Dead Man's Chest Quest

Treasure quests are the backbone of any good pirate game, and Windrose leans into that hard. The Fifteen Men on a Dead Man's Chest quest is one of the first curio-driven treasure hunts you'll encounter, and it's short enough to knock out in a few minutes once you know where to dig. The catch is that opening the chest doesn't go smoothly. Four drowned enemies spawn the moment you try to claim your loot, and if you're still in the early hours of the game, that fight can catch you off guard.

How do you start the Fifteen Men on a Dead Man's Chest quest?

The quest begins when you pick up the Blurry Sketch of the Island curio from a shipwreck on the east coast of the starting island, according to PCGamesN. Adding it to your journal automatically marks the dig location on your map. From there, open the pause menu, go to the Adventure tab, select the Journal option, and track the quest. A blue marker will appear on your map pointing to the center of the island, within the green section.

The quest has a single objective: Find the Pirate's Chest. It sounds simple, and it mostly is, but the fight that follows the dig is what trips up players who head there underprepared.

Where is the chest in Fifteen Men on a Dead Man's Chest?

Head to the blue marker on your map. You'll know you're in the right spot when you see four skeletons arranged in a circle on the ground. The chest is buried directly in the center of that formation, right at the star icon on the map.

Equip your shovel and dig. According to both PCGamesN and Deltia's Gaming, it only takes two to three digs before the chest surfaces. You don't need to dig deep, so if nothing is appearing, make sure you're positioned at the exact center between all four skeletons.

Once the chest is visible, interact with it and select "Open the Chest" from the dialogue box.

How to defeat the drowned enemies

Opening the chest triggers the four drowned enemies to rise from the skeleton formation around you. These are level 2 enemies, so they're manageable but not pushovers at the very start of the game. The most reliable approach, as noted by Destructoid, is to focus on one at a time rather than letting all four chip away at you simultaneously.

Once all four are down, you'll also pick up Undead Essence as a drop from the fight. That's a useful resource, so don't skip looting the bodies.

After clearing the enemies, return to the chest and interact with it again. This time, select "Take the risk and open the chest" to claim your rewards and complete the quest.

Of the three reward types, Silver Ingots are the most valuable going forward. According to Destructoid, you'll need them to craft and upgrade jewelry, so banking these early gives you a head start on gear progression. The guineas can be spent trading with smugglers, and the 50 XP contributes to your early character progression.

What's the curio system and why does it matter?

The Blurry Sketch of the Island curio that triggers this quest is part of Windrose's broader treasure hunting loop. Curios are collectible items you find by looting camps, shipwrecks, and points of interest across the different islands. Each one either marks a buried chest location or kicks off a quest with its own requirements, ranging from simple digs to full enemy encounters or sailing to a new island entirely.

The Fifteen Men quest is one of the more straightforward examples, which is why it works well as an introduction to how curios function. Get comfortable with this system early and you'll find a steady stream of silver, resources, and XP throughout your playthrough.
