If your party needs someone to absorb every hit a boss can throw, hold enmity through a full dungeon run, and keep the group alive long enough to deal damage, the Templar is that class. Armed with a Longsword and built around block mechanics, the Templar in Aion 2 sits at maximum survivability with respectable utility, though raw damage output is firmly at the bottom of the class roster. That trade-off is the whole point. Here's everything you need to know to play one well.
The Templar's three core responsibilities never change regardless of content: pull first to establish enmity, control where the boss is facing, and soak the hardest hits with mitigation skills.
On the enmity side, the Templar has access to Taunt (a Stigma skill that directly forces aggro on a target) alongside passive tools like Insulting Roar, which increases Enmity Boost by 100% for 5 seconds after a front attack. Losing aggro as a Templar usually means you stopped attacking, not that your enmity generation is weak.
Boss positioning matters because back attacks are a core damage mechanic for classes like the Assassin. Keeping a boss rotated away from the party is a habit you want to build from your first dungeon run. It costs nothing and directly increases your party's damage output.
Mitigation is where the Templar really separates from other classes. Warding Strike (available at level 8) grants Warding for 10 seconds, which increases PvE Damage Tolerance by 20%. The passive Block Pain triggers on being hit and adds another layer of PvE Damage Tolerance. Guarding Seal fires automatically when HP drops to 50% or lower, blocking a set amount of damage for 30 seconds on a 1-minute cooldown. Stack these together and you can survive hits that would delete other classes.
At max level, skill point allocation becomes specific. The following ranks are what testing across dungeons and boss content supports for a level 45 Templar. Skills marked with an asterisk require Daevanion Board investment to reach the listed rank.
| Skill | Recommended Rank | Key Speciality Choice |
|---|---|---|
| Vicious Strike | Rank 10 | +20% MP Restored |
| Pummel | Rank 10 | Absorbs 3% HP (drop MP cost with a healer) |
| Poach | Rank 8 | Cooldown reset on kill; boss version: gap-close on Incap Immunity |
| Shield Smite | Rank 8 | Removes MP cost, restores 200 MP on hit |
| Judgment (Board) | Rank 10 | Absorbs 1% HP; extra damage on bosses |
| Flash Rampage (Board) | Rank 8 | Absorbs 5% HP |
| Debilitating Smash (Board) | Rank 8 | 30% chance to Stun for 3 seconds |
| Warding Strike (Board) | Rank 8 | +100 Block during Warding; swap to -5s cooldown with better gear |
| Shield Rush (Board) | Rank 8 | +10m Range |
| Annihilate (Board) | Rank 10 | +100% damage vs Incap Immunity targets |
| Punishment | Rank 10 | +30% Skill Speed |
| Defiance (Board) | Rank 8 | Restores 20% HP on activation |
Debilitating Smash deserves a callout beyond its rank. Hitting up to 4 enemies within 4 meters and reducing their Defense by 25% for 5 seconds makes it a mandatory part of any multi-target pull rotation, not just a filler skill.
Passive investment follows a clear priority. Enhance Health and Insulting Roar both take 10 ranks. Fury goes to 11 ranks since it buffs party PvE Damage Boost on block, which makes it a group contribution skill, not just a personal one. Punishing Benediction takes 10 ranks for the 50% chance to deal additional damage on hit. Block Pain, Survival Willpower, and Warding Shield each take 2 ranks, while Ironclad Defense and Guarding Seal sit at 1 rank each.
The Western version of Aion 2 limits Stigma slots to 4 at a time, which changes the build compared to Korean and Taiwanese servers. At this point in progression, the recommended setup is:
Empyrean Lord's Punishment at 15 ranks is the long-term upgrade once resources allow, but it is not the priority right now.

Here's the short answer: use Tab Target Mode, not Action Combat Mode. In Tab Target, your character fires auto-attacks between skills, which means more total hits, more enmity generated, and more DPS. Action Combat looks better but produces weaker results for a Templar running macros.
To bind your macro key, open Settings, navigate to Key Settings, and scroll to the Macro entry. It has no default binding, so assign something accessible like the - key. Then open the Skill section of your character sheet and click the Macro button in the top right to access the Macro UI. Players with high latency may need to raise the delay value to around 40; otherwise leave it at default.
The four macro lines to set up:
Auto-Attack Line
Main Macro
Shield Smite Line
Doom Shield Line
The Auto-Attack Line and Main Macro carry most of your rotation. Skills outside those macros like Fury need to be activated manually between macro presses to keep the party damage buff rolling.
The Templar does not need to spread points across every board. The early game plan is two boards, with minor dips into the others at the very end of progression.
Focus on these nodes first:
The Vaizel and later boards (Triniel at level 40, Azphel at level 45) provide Critical Damage Boost, Multi-Hit stats, and PvP-specific nodes. Azphel is entirely PvP-focused with PvP Damage Boost, PvP Damage Tolerance, Status Effect Chance and Resist, and PvP Critical and Accuracy/Evasion nodes.
Gear optimization for the Templar centers on a handful of stats that compound well together:
| Stat | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| Front Damage Boost | Templars always attack from the front; this is your primary damage multiplier |
| Smite | Chance to deal double damage; target helmet, shoulder, and cape |
| Weapon Damage Boost | Direct damage increase, no conditions |
| Critical Damage Boost | Amplifies crits, pairs with Punishing Benediction procs |
| Attack / Defense | Both are equally important; do not neglect either |
| Combat Speed | Directly affects how quickly Judgment fits into its skill loop |
For accuracy targets: aim for 900 in Conquest content and 1300 for Sanctum, where keeping aggro stable requires the higher floor.
Combat Speed has a soft cap at 50%. Going beyond that produces diminishing returns, so stop investing once you hit that number.
Wings are a meaningful stat source that players sometimes overlook early on. Season 1 has 26 collectible wings (4 Green, 6 Blue, 16 Gold). Owning and fully upgrading all 26 adds 430 Extra Attack, 8% Bonus PvE Damage, 2% Force, 120 Accuracy, 135 Crit, 2000 Vitality, 600 Defense, and 300 Penetration. The full set contributes roughly 10% more PvE damage alongside a 10% enmity boost. Check out the Aion 2 wings list and how to get them to plan your collection efficiently.
For BiS titles, the Genesis title (earned by fully enhancing 15 gold wings) gives Bonus PvE Damage +5.5%, Force +4%, and Extra Accuracy +90. The Ruler of All Things title from collecting 200 different pets adds Extra Defense +300, Rear Damage Resist +5.5%, and Boss Damage Resist +6%.

For a deeper look at how the Templar compares to every other class in the game, the Aion 2 class tier list breaks down PvE and PvP rankings across the full roster. And if you want to get your hotbar and skill macros configured correctly from the start, the Aion 2 hotbar and macro setup guide covers every slot and binding option in detail.
Can the Templar deal meaningful damage or is it purely defensive? The Templar's damage rating is two stars out of five, so it is the lowest in the class roster. That said, skills like Punishment (which grants up to 7.5% PvE Damage Boost and 15% PvP Damage Boost at max charge) and Debilitating Smash (which cuts enemy Defense by 25%) mean you are contributing offensively, just not leading the damage charts.
When should I use Defiance? Defiance removes Stun, Knockdown, Airborne, Grab, Frost, and Fear, then grants Status Effect Immunity for 5 seconds. Use it reactively when you get hit by a CC chain that would cause you to drop aggro, not on cooldown.
What is the Templar's biggest weakness? Mana. Fresh level 45 Templars run out of MP faster than any other class in extended fights. The Vicious Strike MP Restored speciality and Shield Smite's MP cost removal are the primary fixes. Until your gear improves, treat mana management as an active part of your rotation.
Is the Templar worth playing in PvP? The Azphel Daevanion Board is entirely dedicated to PvP stats, and Stigma skills like Second Skin (30% PvE Damage Tolerance, 15% PvP Damage Tolerance) and Comrade in Arms (damage sharing with party members) have clear PvP applications. The class is viable in PvP but requires more investment than in PvE to reach its ceiling.
