Overview
Developed by Ubisoft Bordeaux and released on October 5, 2023, Assassin's Creed Mirage is a deliberate step away from the sprawling RPG format that defined Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla. The game centers on Basim Ibn Ishaq, a young orphan living on the streets of Anbar who dreams of something greater than petty theft. When a botched infiltration of the Caliph's palace triggers a brutal crackdown on his community, Basim is forced to flee and ultimately joins the Hidden Ones, the secretive precursor to the Assassin Brotherhood.
The story takes Basim from the mountain fortress of Alamut, where he trains under the stern mentor Roshan, to the labyrinthine districts of Baghdad, where he hunts down members of the Order of the Ancients. As Basim closes in on the Order's leadership, his childhood visions of a monstrous jinni grow harder to ignore, pulling him toward a truth about his own identity that connects directly to established franchise lore. The narrative is compact and character-driven in a way the series hasn't been since its early entries.

Gameplay and mechanics
Mirage returns stealth and parkour to the center of every encounter, rather than treating them as optional approaches in a combat-first system. Key mechanics include:

World and setting
Baghdad in the ninth century is one of the most distinct settings the franchise has used. Ubisoft Bordeaux recreates the city during the Abbasid Caliphate's golden age, when it was among the most populated and intellectually active cities in the world. The game divides Baghdad into several distinct districts, each with its own social character, architecture, and guard density.
The city rewards exploration on foot and across rooftops. Markets, canals, and dense residential quarters create natural parkour routes, while the contrast between wealthy enclaves and poorer neighborhoods gives the world texture beyond visual variety. Basim's background as a street thief makes the lower districts feel like home territory in a way that feeds directly into the game's tone.
What does the Valley of Memory update add?
The free Valley of Memory update expands Mirage with an entirely new region based on AlUla, a desert area featuring oases and ancient rock formations. It introduces a self-contained story arc for Basim involving family secrets and a local gang threatening the valley's residents. The update also brings several fan-requested gameplay changes: mission replay, adjustments to parkour responsiveness, and expanded customization options. For players who finished the base game, it offers a meaningful reason to return without requiring any additional purchase.

Content and replayability
Mirage's focused structure means it runs shorter than recent Assassin's Creed entries, with a main story completable in roughly 15 to 20 hours depending on how much side content players pursue. That tighter scope is a feature rather than a flaw. Each assassination target comes with its own investigation phase, where gathering intel before striking opens up alternate approaches to the kill.
