The Gilded Ruin Camo is one of the more interesting unlocks Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 has offered in a while. It ties a pre-order incentive for Modern Warfare 4 directly to an active challenge, and the first 100,000 players to finish it get a version stamped with their own unique serial number. That serialized variant is the real prize here. Once those 100,000 slots fill up, the opportunity is gone permanently.
What do you need before starting the challenge?
Before a single Skull counts toward your total, you need to have pre-purchased Modern Warfare 4 (Standard or Vault Edition). Doing so grants you the Gilded Pearl Camo Pack, which contains two things: the Moonlit Pearl Universal Camo (available immediately in Black Ops 7 at the start of Season 5) and access to the Gilded Ruin challenge itself.
Pre-ordering before July 23, 2026 at 12 PM PT meant the challenge unlocked the moment it went live. Pre-ordering after that date still grants access, but your odds of landing inside the 100,000-player window drop fast depending on how many slots remain.

How to earn 5,000 Skulls fast
The challenge tracks a single Skull Score across all game modes. Every elimination you earn contributes, but the rate varies significantly depending on where you play.
The math here is pretty clear. Warzone is the most efficient mode by a wide margin: 167 eliminations gets you to 5,000 Skulls. Compare that to Zombies, where you would need 5,000 eliminations for the same result. Zombies is the slowest route by a significant margin.
Multiplayer sits in a comfortable middle ground. At 10 Skulls per kill, you need 500 eliminations total, which is achievable in a few solid sessions. Players who prefer objective modes where kills flow naturally will find Multiplayer the most consistent grind.
Endgame at 5 Skulls per elimination is roughly half as efficient as Multiplayer, but it can still contribute meaningfully if you switch modes to break up the session.

Skull Score mid-match
What is the fastest route to 5,000 Skulls?
If your Warzone skills are solid, that mode is the clear winner. 30 Skulls per elimination means a 10-kill Warzone game contributes 300 Skulls toward your total. A decent run of five or six matches could put you within striking distance of the finish line.
For players who struggle to rack up Warzone eliminations, Multiplayer on high-kill maps is the more reliable path. Modes that encourage aggressive play and frequent contact will keep the Skulls ticking over faster than objective-heavy modes where you might spend more time contesting points than shooting.
Zombies is genuinely not worth prioritizing for this challenge. One Skull per elimination means you would need to grind through thousands of rounds to make meaningful progress. Treat any Zombies time as bonus contribution rather than a primary farming strategy.
What happens after you hit 5,000 Skulls?
Once your Skull Score reaches 5,000, you need to manually claim the Gilded Ruin Universal Camo. The camo does not land in your inventory automatically, so make sure you actually trigger the claim. If you were among the first 100,000 players to reach the target, your copy will carry a serialized number reflecting your exact finishing position, from #1 to #100,000.
Both the Gilded Ruin and Moonlit Pearl camos transfer automatically to Modern Warfare 4 when that game launches on October 23, 2026. You do not need to re-earn anything; they will be available in your Gunsmith from day one in MW4.

Is the Gilded Ruin Camo worth chasing?
For most players, yes, but the urgency depends entirely on how much you value the serialized version. The standard Gilded Ruin Camo is a solid Universal finish that works across every weapon in both games, and it costs nothing beyond a Modern Warfare 4 pre-purchase you were likely making anyway.
The serialized variant is a different calculation. Low serial numbers carry genuine bragging rights in a game built around showing off cosmetics, and once those 100,000 slots close, that window shuts permanently. If you pre-ordered before July 23 and have any interest in camo collecting, running this challenge as soon as possible is the obvious move.
For players deep in Black Ops 7's Zombies content, the grind might feel disruptive since Zombies contributes so little per elimination. Finishing up any active Zombies objectives first, such as unlocking the Agarthan Device Relic or grabbing the Music Box Relic, before pivoting to Multiplayer or Warzone for the Skull grind is probably the smarter order of operations.
