Destiny 2 Monument of Triumph Release ...

The Monument of Triumph update is Destiny 2's final content patch, and the servers are going to take a beating when it goes live. Preloading is your best option for getting in quickly, but the storage requirements vary wildly by platform. Some of you are going to need to clear out a serious chunk of hard drive space before the download even starts.

When does the preload go live?

Preloading for Monument of Triumph opens at 11am CT on June 9, exactly one hour before the patch itself drops. That one-hour window is tight, so if you're on a slower connection, getting the preload started the moment it becomes available is worth doing.

How big is the Monument of Triumph download?

The actual patch content runs between 27 and 37 GB, which is manageable. The preload is a different story. Depending on your platform, you could be looking at up to 180 GB in download data, and that's before accounting for the storage space you need free on your drive.

Here's a full breakdown by platform:

The reason Steam and Epic Games Store users need so much free space is that both platforms keep the old and new versions of the game on disk simultaneously during a preload. Once the update goes live and the old build is cleared out, that number drops back down to around 180 GB. Still a big game, but at least you're not holding two copies of it indefinitely.

How to preload on PC (Steam and Epic Games Store)

On Steam, the preload should appear automatically in your library once 11am CT hits. Make sure Destiny 2 is set to either update automatically or flagged as high priority in your download queue. If the preload doesn't show up after the window opens, restarting the Steam client tends to force it to check for available updates.

On Epic Games Store, the process works the same way as Steam with similar storage requirements. Check the game in your library and the update should queue up automatically.

How to preload on console

Console players have a simpler setup process, and the storage math is a bit more forgiving than PC.

PlayStation 5 users can trigger the download by highlighting Destiny 2 on the home screen, pressing the Options button, and selecting Check for Updates. This is done from the console dashboard, not from inside the game itself.

Xbox Series X/S players can enable automatic updates by going to Settings, then System, then Updates. With that toggle on, the preload will download in the background without any manual input.

PlayStation 4 users should note the higher storage requirement of up to 235.32 GB, which is notably more than PS5. Make sure you've got that space cleared before starting.

For older consoles and Microsoft Store users, Bungie's own Destiny Update Guide covers the specific steps for each platform.

Should you skip the preload?

If you're on Steam or Epic and don't have 353 GB free, skipping the preload is the smarter move. The 27-37 GB patch download at launch is much easier on your storage, and unless you're on a very slow connection, it shouldn't take long enough to matter.

Console players with limited storage on PS4 face a similar calculation. Up to 235.32 GB is a lot to ask, and clearing that much space just to be in the game an hour earlier isn't worth it for most people.

For everyone else with the space available and a fast connection, the preload is straightforward. Get it done before launch and you'll be loading into the first activity while others are still watching a progress bar.
