DragonSword: Awakening launched on PC with a surprisingly large roster, and picking the wrong characters early wastes resources you won't easily get back. The good news is that the game is genuinely well-balanced across the board, so no pick is a total dead end. That said, some heroes pull ahead in the current meta, and knowing which ones to invest in first makes clearing content noticeably faster. This guide breaks down every ranked character from S-tier down to B-tier, with ability notes so you understand why each placement makes sense.
How does the tier system work in DragonSword: Awakening?
The tier list below splits the roster into three groups: S-tier (top performers in the current meta), A-tier (strong picks with minor limitations), and B-tier (functional but situational). Two things are worth keeping in mind before you commit to any ranking.
First, the roster is unusually well-balanced. Any team can clear content if the party members complement each other. Second, investing resources into a character changes the equation significantly. A B-tier hero with heavy investment can outperform a neglected S-tier pick. Use this list as a starting point for resource allocation, not a reason to bench characters you enjoy.

S-Tier Characters
Theresia
Theresia is the strongest character in the current meta and the most technically demanding. Her kit revolves around two toggleable abilities: Consecration and Celestial Verdict, which let you apply either bleed or stun depending on which is active. Divine Arc closes distance on a target and deals heavy damage while inflicting bleed. Holy Rise adds more bleed on top. The ceiling here is high, but you need real practice to switch between Consecration and Celestial Verdict at the right moments. Once that clicks, no other character comes close.
Lute
Lute is the safest S-tier investment, especially for players still learning the game. Stun Slash deals damage and stuns simultaneously. Healing Circle patches up the whole party, which is rare utility at this tier. Sword Grab lets you pick up an enemy and use them as a weapon against others. Relic Fall delivers strong AoE damage when timed correctly. There are almost no downsides to Lute, which is exactly why heavy investment here pays off consistently.
Reina
Reina rewards players who are comfortable staying airborne. Both Rising Cutter and Wind Slayer apply airborne status on top of their damage, and Tempest is a reliable option against high-priority targets. Her mobility ceiling is genuinely high, but managing her effectively requires comfort with aerial combat. She is not the easiest character to pick up, but the payoff is a constant stream of hits that most enemies struggle to punish.
Ornette
Ornette applies shock with both her active abilities. Holy Cross hits hard thanks to its raw attack power. Holy Circle trades some of that damage for a 30% boost to Ornette's critical damage, which then feeds directly into her Judgment and Holy Grail abilities. The synergy between Holy Circle's crit buff and her other moves makes her damage output more consistent than it first appears.
Kalsion
Kalsion is a melee-focused powerhouse. His weapon, Blaze, fires bursts of fire energy that deal damage and raise his own attack power through Flame Wave. He can charge into groups and generate shock waves to finish enemies within a radius. Alternative modes give him flexibility that most melee characters lack, making him effective across different encounter types.
A-Tier Characters
Charlotte
Charlotte is the only character in the roster with a stealth mechanic. She summons a clone to take her place, turns invisible, then detonates the clone for bonus damage. Her poison daggers apply a damage-over-time effect that chips away at enemy health independently. Illusion Kick gets her airborne, and Shadow Grab slams enemies down. For players who prefer an assassin playstyle, Charlotte is arguably S-tier material.
Roxy
Roxy is the most approachable bleed character in the roster. Crimson Spiral moves her forward while applying bleed on contact. Bloody Shower fires arrows in a forward line and bleeds every enemy it touches. Bleeding Grab and Kick Storm both manipulate enemy movement, giving you consistent control over fight positioning. She is not the highest bleed ceiling available, but the ease of use makes her reliable across most content.

Castella
Castella is one of the first characters you can unlock, and she holds up well into later content. Her kit focuses on knocking enemies down and pushing them away to control ground positioning. Her howling abilities extend that control further. There are no complex mechanics to master here, which makes her a dependable pick for teams that need reliable crowd control without a steep learning curve.
Aria
Aria is a ranged character built around explosive damage. Her bombs deal significant burst damage, and Switch-On gives you some control over detonation timing. She can also use multiple bolts for more traditional ranged output. The versatility between timed explosions and direct bolt attacks makes her genuinely fun to run, and she contributes well from the moment you add her to a party.
Dana
Dana is one of the few hybrid support characters in the roster. Most of her kit operates through her summon, Chako, who can deal damage, apply frost, and knock down targets at the same time. Chako can also deploy a shield to protect allies. Dana is niche, but the teams she fits into benefit meaningfully from what she brings.
Kalien
Kalien has a high skill floor. Her abilities take the form of a fox, and both Fox Chase and Fox Parade require you to learn their movement paths before you can use them effectively. Both moves deal damage and apply burn for ongoing health drain. The payoff for mastering her movement patterns is real, but expect a longer learning curve than most A-tier picks.
B-Tier Characters
Alex
Alex leans heavily defensive. Down Smash interrupts enemy momentum with a knockdown, and Guard Stance reduces super armor depletion rate. He works in specific team compositions, but his defensive focus makes him too narrow for most general content in the current meta.
Tarte
Tarte revolves around her holy orbs. Bolt Bubble generates them continuously, and Lightning Shock fires a bolt forward. The damage output depends entirely on how actively you trigger the orb system. She offers some healing as a bonus, but the situational nature of her core mechanic keeps her out of higher tiers.
Cerese
Cerese fits best on dedicated frost teams. Ice Storm is genuinely strong for controlling enemy movement patterns, and Ice Turn plus Frozen Spike both deal damage while applying frost and airborne status. The problem is that she does not slot naturally into most team compositions outside of frost-focused builds, which limits where you can actually use her.

What's the best team composition in DragonSword: Awakening?
There is no single correct answer, but the most consistent approach is to run one high-damage S-tier carry alongside a control character and a support or second DPS. Theresia or Lute as the primary carry, Castella for knockdown control, and either Dana for support or Roxy for additional bleed coverage covers most content without gaps.
For players who want a more aggressive setup, Kalsion paired with Ornette and Charlotte puts out serious damage from multiple angles. Kalsion and Ornette both apply shock, while Charlotte's poison adds a third damage-over-time layer.
The four characters still pending assessment (Sion, Astria, Eileen, and Othello) could shift some of these recommendations once their kits are fully evaluated. Check the DragonSword: Awakening strategy guides for updates as those characters get tested.
For players who enjoy this kind of character-driven combat system, there is a strong overlap with other adventure games that reward team-building and ability mastery in similar ways.
