Runes are one of the quieter power spikes in DragonSword: Awakening, and the game does almost nothing to explain them before you start collecting. There are five distinct types, five rarity tiers, and a slot-unlock system that costs a specific crafting material most players overlook entirely. Get it right and your damage output jumps noticeably. Get it wrong and you're wasting raid rewards on the wrong stats.
What are runes in DragonSword: Awakening?
Runes are stat-boosting items you attach to equipment pieces. Each rune targets one specific stat, and you earn them primarily through raids. They come in five rarity tiers: Damaged, Intact, Refined, Radiant, and Perfect.
Here's the part most players miss early on: RNG affects a rune's actual power independently of its rarity. An Intact rune can roll stats close to a Damaged one, so don't assume higher rarity always means a massive upgrade. Test what you pull before discarding lower-tier options.

What are the best runes to prioritize?
Resolve and Amplification sit at the top of the priority list for both early-game and endgame builds. Flat ATK from Resolve feeds into every damage calculation, making it universally useful regardless of which hero you're running. Amplification pushes your Critical DMG multiplier higher, and once you clear that 150% mark, the difference in raid performance becomes obvious.
Concentration is worth considering if your CRIT Rate feels inconsistent, but most players find it more efficient to reach a solid CRIT Rate through gear and Karma choices rather than spending rune slots on it. Guardian and Vitality are situational. Survivability runes have their place in harder raid content, but they don't move the needle on damage the way Resolve and Amplification do.

How do you unlock rune slots on equipment?
Rune slots don't come pre-unlocked. You can only attach runes to gear rated 4-star or higher, and each slot requires one Anonymous Artisan's Crafting Tool to open.
To unlock a slot, either click directly on the locked rune slot when inspecting a piece of gear, or press Triangle on PlayStation or Y on Xbox while in the equipment screen.
Where to get Anonymous Artisan's Crafting Tools
Crafting Tools drop from several sources:
- Raids (primary source)
- Story progression
- Ashen Ruins dungeon completion
- Exchange shop for 100 Adventurer's Emblems per tool
The Exchange shop option is the most reliable fallback when raid RNG isn't cooperating. If you're sitting on Adventurer's Emblems without a clear use for them, converting them into Crafting Tools is almost always the right call.

How do you add and remove runes?
Once a slot is unlocked, equipping a rune is straightforward. Select the open slot and choose the rune you want to apply.
Replacing or removing a rune costs 10,000 gold per swap. The process doesn't destroy the rune you're removing, and it doesn't require another Crafting Tool. You can freely rotate runes between gear pieces as your build evolves, provided you have the gold.
After testing rune swaps across multiple gear pieces, the gold cost becomes manageable at higher progression levels, but it stings early. Prioritize getting your main damage dealer's slots sorted first before worrying about support heroes.
