Castella is one of the standout heroes in DragonSword: Awakening, and her Stun-based kit makes her a fixture in most team compositions. The problem hits around her second Breakthrough: the game suddenly asks for Leaf of Vigor, a resource that looks like it should be everywhere but somehow never is when you need it. This guide covers every reliable farming method, the dungeon routes that skip the open-world grind entirely, and the full checklist of what you need before the Breakthrough option even appears.
Where does Leaf of Vigor spawn in the open world?
Leaf of Vigor grows near trees in forested zones across Orbis. The nodes are not randomly scattered, so wandering and hoping to stumble across them is a reliable way to waste twenty minutes. Stick to the three zones below and you will cover all the meaningful spawn points.
The forest northwest of Hill of Journey is the clear winner. After testing all three zones back to back, the node count there is noticeably higher than the other two combined. Walk close to the base of trees rather than through open clearings, since the pickup prompts appear at ground level near trunks.

Castella's Breakthrough requirements
How do dungeons compare to open-world farming?
If you would rather earn Leaf of Vigor through combat, the Rusted Tusk Bandits' Treasure Vault dungeon drops it on every completion. The reward scales sharply with difficulty:
Very Hard hands you 10 leaves per clear, which beats multiple open-world laps when your gear can handle it. If your combat power is not there yet, Hard at 7 leaves per run is still competitive with the best overworld route. Running the dungeon also keeps you progressing through other rewards, so it is rarely a pure time loss.
Can you buy Leaf of Vigor from the Exchange?
Yes, but only as a last resort. The Exchange costs 2 Adventurer's Emblems for a single Leaf of Vigor. That exchange rate is punishing enough that most players will be better served by one dungeon run or a quick pass through the Hill of Journey forest. The only scenario where the Exchange makes sense is when you are one or two leaves short of the Breakthrough and have emblems sitting idle.
What else does Castella's Breakthrough require?
Leaf of Vigor is not the only material on the checklist. You also need two grades of Monster Essence, both obtained from the Goblin Bandits' Cave dungeon.
Run both difficulties back to back and you will have both grades in a single session. The Goblin Bandits' Cave is separate from the Rusted Tusk Vault, so plan your route to hit both dungeons before calling it a day.
The full Breakthrough requirement list:
- Leaf of Vigor
- Lowest-Grade Monster Essence (Goblin Bandits' Cave, Normal)
- Low-Grade Monster Essence (Goblin Bandits' Cave, Hard)
- Intermediate Mercenary Corps Rank
That last point trips up a lot of players. Even with every material collected, the Breakthrough option stays locked until your Mercenary Corps Rank reaches Intermediate. Complete the Looming Crisis quest to push your rank to that tier. Check your current rank before farming so you are not sitting on a full inventory with no way to spend it.

Monster Essence dungeon selection
What is the fastest overall route?
For most players, the quickest path to Castella's second Breakthrough looks like this:
- Run the Rusted Tusk Bandits' Treasure Vault on Very Hard for 10 Leaf of Vigor per clear.
- Clear Goblin Bandits' Cave on Normal for Lowest-Grade Monster Essence, then again on Hard for Low-Grade Monster Essence.
- If you still need leaves after dungeon runs, sweep the forest northwest of Hill of Journey for open-world nodes.
- Confirm your Mercenary Corps Rank is at Intermediate via the Looming Crisis quest.
- Open Castella's character menu and trigger the Breakthrough.
Co-op runs through the Rusted Tusk Vault cut clear times significantly if you have friends available, making the Very Hard difficulty much more accessible even at moderate gear levels.
