DragonSword: Awakening Isn't a Gacha Game – How It Actually Works

DragonSword: Awakening throws a lot at you from the opening hours. Hero recruitment, Karma weapons, elemental gear, Familiars, World Bosses, daily missions — it's a lot to parse before you've even left the first region. The good news is that the systems connect logically once you know which thread to pull first. This guide breaks down every major mechanic, tells you what to prioritize, and gets you past the early-game wall without wasting resources on the wrong things.

How to progress in DragonSword: Awakening?

The main story is your progression engine. Every chapter you complete opens new gameplay systems, unlocks Hero Quests, and reveals additional regions to explore. Skipping ahead to optional content before finishing story chapters means missing out on those unlocks entirely, so keep pushing the campaign forward.

Two daily activities sit right below the main story in terms of priority: Regional Missions and World Bosses. Regional Missions reward Skill Scrolls needed to upgrade your heroes' abilities, plus Forging Molds that let you customize the main stats on endgame gear. World Bosses drop Basic Karma, which you need to upgrade and ascend your Karma weapons. Both activities reset daily, so skipping them even a few days creates a noticeable progression gap.

tip
Completing the Prologue hands you your first Fate's Invitation Ticket. Don't spend it until you've read the hero roster and confirmed who fits your preferred playstyle.

How do you unlock new heroes?

DragonSword: Awakening skips the traditional gacha model entirely. Every hero is recruited using Fate's Invitation Tickets, and you choose exactly who you want from the Exchange menu. No random summons, no duplicate pity systems to worry about.

Tickets come from two reliable sources: main story chapters and Hero Quests. Hero Quests unlock after reaching specific campaign milestones and reward both additional tickets and Exclusive Karma tied to particular heroes. Some characters also join your roster automatically through story events, so you won't need to spend tickets on everyone.

Because tickets are genuinely scarce, only spend them on heroes that fit your intended team composition. Recruiting a character just because they look interesting and then benching them is a fast way to stall your progression.

What is the Awakening system and how does it work?

Awakening is a late-progression power spike for heroes you're already committed to. Each hero has six Awakening levels, and each stage unlocks unique bonuses that either sharpen offensive output or add new passive effects that change how that character plays.

The material you need is Stigma Awakened Stones, purchased for 200 Fragment of Sacred Light each. Since Sacred Light takes consistent exploration effort to accumulate, Awakening is a long-term investment rather than something you'll max out in your first week. Focus on awakening your main DPS first before spreading resources across the roster.

What are the best beginner teams?

Combat in DragonSword: Awakening is built around elemental effects and crowd control chains. The strongest teams aren't just three high-stat heroes — they're heroes whose abilities extend each other's combos and create openings for follow-up damage.

This lineup produces some of the highest damage output in the game. Charlotte handles burst damage through stealth combos, Johnny applies Poison rapidly to extend pressure, and Renia freezes enemies to set up additional combo opportunities. The catch is that it demands good timing: aerial combos, manual character switching, and consistent dodging. If you're comfortable with the combat system, this team rewards that skill ceiling hard.

This is the team to run if you're still learning the combat rhythm. Seris deals consistent Frost damage while freezing groups, Othello locks down enemies with Ice Spears and follow-up hits, and Dana covers the team with shields and additional crowd control. Because most of the damage comes from range, you spend less time in dodge-or-die situations and more time maintaining Freeze combo chains. It clears story bosses efficiently without requiring frame-perfect play.

For deeper team-building options beyond these two lineups, the best team compositions guide covers Bleed, Airborne, and Stagger setups in full detail.

warning
Avoid building five pieces from the same gear set. Full set bonuses activate at three pieces, so mixing two sets almost always produces stronger passive effects than going full mono-set.

How do you get and reforge gear?

Most gear comes from the Blacksmith rather than enemy drops. Crafting materials are available through Trait Dungeons, the Exchange (using Adventurer's Emblem medals earned from missions), or the Alchemist NPC Shanoa.

Every hero is tied to a specific element, so always craft gear that reinforces their elemental strengths. For stat placement, put your strongest offensive stats — Critical Damage or Attack Power — on chest and leg pieces, since those slots carry the highest stat values.

If your crafted gear rolls bad secondary stats, the Reforging system at the Blacksmith lets you reroll them. Reforging costs a Stat Grinder (25 Adventurer's Emblem medals each) plus gold. The results are random, so treat it as a gradual optimization tool rather than something to grind aggressively early on. When prioritizing substats, rank them in this order:

  1. Critical Damage
  2. Attack Power
  3. Defense Ignore
  4. Airborne Damage

How does the Karma system work?

Karma attaches to your heroes' weapon system and directly affects damage output. Basic Karma provides universal stat bonuses and can be equipped across multiple heroes. Exclusive Karma is character-specific and unlocks additional combat abilities that meaningfully change how that hero performs in battle.

How do you upgrade and ascend Karma?

Upgrading Karma consumes the required materials to push it to the next tier. Ascending Basic Karma requires duplicate copies of the same Karma, which is exactly why farming World Bosses daily matters — they're one of the most consistent sources of those duplicates.

If you receive Exclusive Karma for a hero you don't use, dismantle it for resources rather than letting it sit. If you have a Fragment of Afterimage, you can exchange it for Exclusive Karma belonging to heroes you actually play. Crafting a Fragment of Afterimage requires a Fragment of Memory and a Whirling Thoughts, both farmable at the Tower of Trials in Skyspire Rock mountain.

For a full breakdown of all four upgrade systems including Breakthrough and hero leveling, the hero upgrade guide covers every layer in detail.

How do you farm Fragment of Sacred Light?

Fragment of Sacred Light is the currency used to buy Stigma Awakened Stones for hero Awakening. The primary source is exploration: opening hidden treasure chests, defeating mini-bosses scattered across the world, and clearing optional exploration content all reward them.

As you unlock better Familiars and traversal abilities, previously unreachable locations become accessible, which means more chests and more fragments. Collect every fragment you find rather than skipping optional areas — they become increasingly valuable as you push into later progression stages.

How do you unlock Familiars and increase Mercenary Rank?

Familiars are your mounts, but each one does more than boost movement speed. Every Familiar grants a unique traversal ability that opens up different parts of the world. Some are locked behind story progression or specific quests, while others unlock by hitting Mercenary Rank thresholds.

Your Mercenary Rank climbs through story chapters, regional exploration, and general activity completion. Here are the five Familiars worth prioritizing early:

Skills unlocked from additional Familiar variants can often be equipped on your other mounts, so picking up duplicates when available isn't wasted effort.

tip
If you don't own the Deluxe Pack, the Bright Crowtit's Air Dash is your best early traversal option. Reaching Novice Mercenary Corps rank should be a near-term goal for any player who wants faster exploration.

For full unlock conditions and traversal ability details on every Familiar in the game, the Familiars unlock guide has the complete list.
