The hang glider is the single biggest quality-of-life unlock in Everwind. Without it, crossing between floating islands means building bridges, praying your jump arc is right, or eating fall damage that kills your momentum before you even get started. With it, you leap off your ship and glide down to any island you want. The problem is the game never tells you how to get it. The unlock process spans multiple biomes, requires a specific key, and demands a crafting station you cannot build yourself.
What do you need before hunting the glider?
Three things have to happen in order: get a Steamer Vault Key, find a Steamer Shuttle crash site at high altitude, and locate a Fabricator to actually build the thing. Skipping ahead on any of these will cost you time. Here is the full sequence.

Steamer Islands from the spyglass
How to get the Steamer Vault Key
The Steamer Vault Key is the first gate. There are two ways to find one, and one of them is a significant waste of time.
The dungeon method (skip this)
Mortivar Dungeons contain Laboratory Rooms, which are office-style chambers covered in blueprints and cybernetic equipment. Chests in these rooms have a chance to drop the key. The operative word is chance. The spawn rate for Laboratory Rooms inside these dungeons is low enough that you can clear five of them back to back and come up empty. Unless you are already grinding dungeons for other reasons, this route is not worth pursuing.
Steamer Islands (do this instead)
Pull out your Spyglass and scan the horizon for islands covered in large, bright purple metal structures. These are Steamer Islands, and they are far easier to find than Mortivar Laboratory Rooms. Land on one, search every chest in the area, and the Steamer Vault Key drop rate here is noticeably higher. You will also passively farm Steamer Metal Scraps while you are there, which you need for crafting later.
info
Farm Steamer Metal Scraps while hunting the key. You need 4 of them for the glider recipe, and Steamer Islands are the best source for both at the same time.
Where to find the hang glider blueprint
Once the key is in your inventory, you need to find the lock it belongs to.
Why altitude matters
The Steamer Shuttle crash site, which is where the glider blueprint lives, does not spawn at normal island height. According to the community and confirmed by multiple players, these wrecks appear at around 510 blocks of altitude. They share the same rusty purple aesthetic as Steamer Islands, so use your Spyglass and angle it upward rather than scanning the horizon line. If your ship cannot reach that height, you may need engine upgrades before making this trip.
warning
If your airship tops out below 510 blocks, the Steamer Shuttle will be completely out of reach. Upgrade your engines first or you will waste the trip.

The crash site vault entrance
Unlocking the hologram room
Inside the crash site, work through the wreckage until you hit a heavy vault door. Consume your Steamer Vault Key to open it. The room beyond holds a spread of loot worth grabbing, but the main objective is the glowing hologram projecting the hang glider schematic. Walk up and press your interact button. The recipe is now yours.
This is also the exact moment where a lot of players get confused. As noted in the r/Everwind_Official community, players frequently unlock the hologram and then head back to base, open their crafting station, and find the glider completely absent from the menu. The game is not bugged. The hang glider requires a Fabricator, not a standard workbench.
Why can't you craft the glider at your workbench?
The hang glider is classified as advanced technology. Your basic crafting station cannot process the schematic. You need a Fabricator, which is a high-tier crafting station that you cannot build on your ship or take home with you. You have to find one out in the world and craft on site.

Where to find a Fabricator
Two locations spawn Fabricators reliably:
- Steamer Islands: Fabricators occasionally appear among the purple ruins. Since you are already visiting these islands for the Vault Key, keep an eye out while you are there.
- The Rottenlands: This is the more reliable option. Fabricators spawn frequently here, inside ruined buildings and on rooftops of towers. If you cannot find one on a Steamer Island, head to the Rottenlands.
danger
Bring every crafting material with you before making the trip to a Fabricator. You cannot carry the station back to base, so a missing resource means a second run.

Here is everything you need in your inventory before sitting down at the Fabricator:
info
Reinforced Pipes are the one material that regularly trips players up. If you only have the blueprint for them, craft the pipes at the Fabricator before attempting the glider.
How do you use the hang glider once you have it?
Open your inventory and drag the hang glider into its dedicated equipment slot. From that point, deploying it is straightforward: jump and press Spacebar while airborne. The wings deploy immediately. You can now leap from your ship to raid a lower island, cross gaps that would previously require a bridge, and generally stop worrying about fall damage as a constant threat.

The full route at a glance
- Scan for Steamer Islands with your Spyglass and loot chests until you get a Steamer Vault Key
- Climb to approximately 510 blocks altitude and locate a Steamer Shuttle crash site
- Enter the wreck, open the vault door with your key, and interact with the hologram to unlock the recipe
- Gather all 6 materials (prioritize Reinforced Pipes since they are the most likely gap)
- Find a Fabricator on a Steamer Island or in the Rottenlands
- Craft the glider on site and equip it from your inventory
- Press Spacebar mid-air and never build another bridge again
