How to Get the Hang Glider.jpg

The hang glider is the single biggest quality-of-life unlock in Everwind. Without it, crossing between floating islands means building bridges, hoping your jump arc works out, or eating fall damage that kills your momentum before you even start. With it, you leap off your ship and glide down to any island you want. The problem is the game never explains how to unlock it. The process spans multiple biomes, requires a specific key, and demands a crafting station you can't build yourself.

What do you need before hunting the glider?

Three things must happen in sequence: obtain a Steamer Vault Key, locate a Steamer Shuttle crash site at high altitude, and find a Fabricator to actually craft the glider. Skip any step and you'll waste time backtracking. Here's the complete sequence.

How to get the Steamer Vault Key

The Steamer Vault Key is your first hurdle. Two methods exist, and one is a waste of your time.

The dungeon method (skip this)

Mortivar Dungeons contain Laboratory Rooms — office-style chambers filled with blueprints and cybernetic equipment. Chests in these rooms can drop the key. The catch is can. Laboratory Room spawn rates inside these dungeons are low enough that you can clear five dungeons and walk away with nothing. Unless you're already farming dungeons for other loot, don't bother with this route.

Steamer Islands (do this instead)

Grab your Spyglass and scan the horizon for islands covered in large, bright purple metal structures. These are Steamer Islands, and they're far easier to locate than Mortivar Laboratory Rooms. Land on one, loot every chest you can find, and the Steamer Vault Key drop rate here is significantly better. You'll also collect Steamer Metal Scraps while you're there, which you need for the glider recipe later.

info
Collect Steamer Metal Scraps while hunting the key. You need 4 of them for the glider recipe, and Steamer Islands are the best source for both at once.

Where to find the hang glider blueprint

Once you have the key, you need to locate the lock it opens.

Why altitude matters

The Steamer Shuttle crash site, which holds the glider blueprint, doesn't spawn at normal island height. Player testing consistently places these wrecks around 510 blocks of altitude. They share the same rusty purple aesthetic as Steamer Islands, so use your Spyglass and angle it upward instead of scanning the horizon. If your ship can't reach that height, you'll need engine upgrades before attempting this trip.

warning
If your airship maxes out below 510 blocks, the Steamer Shuttle will be completely inaccessible. Upgrade your engines first or you'll waste the journey.

Unlocking the hologram room

Inside the crash site, navigate through the wreckage until you reach a heavy vault door. Use your Steamer Vault Key to open it. The room beyond contains a spread of loot worth grabbing, but your main objective is the glowing hologram projecting the hang glider schematic. Walk up and press your interact button. The recipe is now unlocked.

This is where many players hit confusion. They unlock the hologram, return to base, open their crafting station, and find the glider missing from the menu. The game isn't bugged. The hang glider requires a Fabricator, not a standard workbench.

Why can't you craft the glider at your workbench?

The hang glider is classified as advanced technology. Your basic crafting station can't process the schematic. You need a Fabricator, which is a high-tier crafting station you can't build on your ship or transport back to base. You must locate one in the world and craft on site.

Where to find a Fabricator

Two locations spawn Fabricators reliably:

  • Steamer Islands: Fabricators occasionally appear among the purple ruins. Since you're already visiting these islands for the Vault Key, watch for one while you're there.
  • The Rottenlands: This is the more consistent option. Fabricators spawn frequently here, inside ruined buildings and on tower rooftops. If you can't locate one on a Steamer Island, head to the Rottenlands.
danger
Bring every crafting material with you before traveling to a Fabricator. You can't carry the station back to base, so a missing resource means a second trip.

Here's everything you need in your inventory before using the Fabricator:

info
Reinforced Pipes are the one material that regularly trips players up. If you only have the blueprint for them, craft the pipes at the Fabricator before attempting the glider.

How do you use the hang glider once you have it?

Open your inventory and drag the hang glider into its dedicated equipment slot. From there, deploying it is simple: jump and press Spacebar while airborne. The wings deploy instantly. You can now leap from your ship to raid a lower island, cross gaps that would previously require a bridge, and stop worrying about fall damage as a constant problem.

The full route at a glance

  1. Scan for Steamer Islands with your Spyglass and loot chests until you obtain a Steamer Vault Key
  2. Climb to approximately 510 blocks altitude and locate a Steamer Shuttle crash site
  3. Enter the wreck, open the vault door with your key, and interact with the hologram to unlock the recipe
  4. Gather all 6 materials (prioritize Reinforced Pipes since they're the most likely gap)
  5. Find a Fabricator on a Steamer Island or in the Rottenlands
  6. Craft the glider on site and equip it from your inventory
  7. Press Spacebar mid-air and never build another bridge again
