The upgrade system in LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is easy to overlook when you're busy punching clowns across Gotham City. But spending your gold Skill Bricks wisely from the start makes a real difference, whether you're chasing trophies, buying Batsuits, or just want Batman hitting harder. Here's what to unlock first and why.

Skill Brick upgrade menu
How does the upgrade system work in LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight?
The upgrade menu splits into two paths: Combat and Exploration. Each upgrade costs 1 gold Skill Brick, which you earn by finishing story levels. You won't have a stockpile early on, so every choice counts.
The game walks you through the basics in an early tutorial, then leaves you to manage the rest. New tiers open as you complete chapters, which means the full tree stays locked until you push through the campaign. That gating makes your first few purchases more important, not less.
The Combat path (left column) focuses on making Batman hit harder and survive longer. The Exploration path (right column) handles stud collection and multipliers, and that's where you should spend first.
Why should you prioritize stud upgrades first?
Studs fund nearly everything outside the main story. You spend them at Bat-Mite's shop in the Batcave to unlock Batmobiles, Batsuit cosmetics, character outfits, and Batcave decorations. If you're trophy hunting or going for 100% completion, studs tie directly into a large chunk of the achievement list. The trophy "Life's been good to me." requires 1,000,000 studs on its own.
The problem is that you can't access the Batcave or Bat-Mite's shop until you hit a specific story milestone. That means the stretch between starting the game and reaching the shop is your best window to stack studs. Grabbing multiplier upgrades before you unlock the shop means you arrive with significantly more currency to spend.
What are the best upgrades to get first?
These three Exploration upgrades should be your first Skill Brick purchases:
These three upgrades work together. Stud Magnet ensures you're not leaving studs scattered on the floor as you move through levels. Hyper Combo raises the cap on how high your multiplier can climb. Stealthy Studs feeds the Stud Combo Meter when you use stealth takedowns, which directly boosts the multiplier that Hyper Combo extends. Stack all three and every fight starts generating noticeably more currency.

Should you invest in Combat upgrades instead?
If you're playing on a higher difficulty and fights are genuinely punishing, the Combat column becomes more relevant. Those upgrades make Batman a more powerful fighter, and on harder settings they're worth considering earlier.
On Classic difficulty, combat upgrades are less urgent. The game is forgiving enough that you can clear most encounters without them, which means the stud-focused Exploration upgrades deliver more practical value per Skill Brick at this stage.
Combat upgrades become more appealing once you've already secured your stud income. Get the three Exploration picks first, then circle back to Combat as you unlock higher tiers through chapter progression.

Tips for getting the most out of your Skill Bricks
- Complete every level before moving on. Skill Bricks come from finishing story levels, so skipping or rushing through stages delays your access to the upgrade tree.
- Check the upgrades menu after each chapter. New tiers unlock as you progress, and it's easy to sit on unspent Skill Bricks without realizing new options have opened.
- Pair Stealthy Studs with stealth playstyles. If you're already taking enemies down quietly, this upgrade gives you a free bonus for doing what you'd do anyway.
- Don't sleep on the final Exploration tier. The stronger stud multiplier upgrades are locked there, so keep pushing through the story to access them.
