Thebes | Map Reveal | Marvel Rivals

The Thebes convoy map landed in Marvel Rivals with Season 9 and immediately shook up the meta. Built around ancient Egyptian architecture fused with retro-futuristic technology, Thebes follows the heroes investigating Apocalypse's death in a collapsed timeline. The map's hybrid design means you start in open spaces before getting funneled into tight tomb corridors, and that shift completely changes how you need to play from round to round.

What kind of map is Thebes in Marvel Rivals?

Thebes is a Convoy objective map, which means the attacking team escorts the Faith-Harvesting Engine to the Temple of Khonshu while defenders work to stop it. The layout opens with relatively spacious areas before narrowing into constricted corridors, rewarding teams that adapt their hero picks to both phases rather than locking in a single strategy.

If the Arakko map felt familiar to you, Thebes will too. The structural DNA is similar: flankers and poke heroes thrive here, and brawler tanks become essential once the corridors close in. Teams that try to brute-force the main lane without accounting for flank routes will get punished.

Where are the three chokepoints on the Thebes map?

Pyramid entrance chokepoint

Pyramid entrance chokepoint

Chokepoint 1: Apocalypse's Pyramid entrance

The match kicks off in an open area that feeds directly into the entrance of Apocalypse's Pyramid. Do not let the initial space fool you. Close-quarters combat starts almost immediately once both teams engage, and it stays intense until the payload crosses into the pyramid.

For the attacking side, brawler tanks like Emma Frost, The Thing, or Hulk should lead the push. Duelists such as Hela and The Punisher can apply damage from behind the frontline while dive heroes like Psylocke, Magik, and Black Widow take alternate paths to disrupt the enemy backline. Getting stuck at this first corner is effectively a match-ender for attackers, so pressure from multiple angles is non-negotiable.

Defenders do well here with Vanguards like Peni Parker and Doctor Strange, who can hold the line and push the payload back. Strategists need to be proactive with healing at this stage because the frontline will take heavy, sustained damage.

Chokepoint 2: Inside Apocalypse's Pyramid

Once the payload clears the entrance, the fight opens up slightly with multiple elevated routes overlooking the central area. This is where aerial heroes earn their place. Iron Man, Human Torch, and Ultron can take high-ground positions and maintain constant pressure on grouped defenders, making it much harder for the defense to hold a static line.

Brawler Vanguards should stay close to the objective and handle any frontline threats, while the flying heroes work the upper levels. There is also a slide route through this section with a health pack attached, so use it if you get cornered rather than trying to fight out of a bad position.

This chokepoint is actually more forgiving for attackers than the first one, provided the aerial and flanking heroes are doing their jobs. The abrupt turn in the payload path can catch defenders off guard if the pressure comes from above.

Chokepoint 3: Temple of Khonshu entrance

The final push into the Temple of Khonshu entrance is the tightest space on the entire map. Both teams get compressed into a straight doorway, and it becomes pure hand-to-hand combat. Think of it like the Budokan chokepoint on the Tokyo 2099: Shin-Shibuya map: you need a decisive team fight win before the payload can complete its journey.

Moon Knight is a surprisingly effective pick here despite recent nerfs. A well-timed ultimate creates the space tanks need to push through the doorway. Strategists become the deciding factor at this stage. Jubilee and Invisible Woman are strong support options, and with both teams going all-in for the final push, whichever team's healers outperform the other will almost always win the round.

What are the best team comps for the Thebes map?

Thebes rewards flexibility. The hybrid layout means a single-dimensional team comp will hit a wall at one of the three chokepoints. Here are three comps that cover the map's demands across all phases:

The Balanced comp is the safest starting point if you are not sure what the enemy team is running. Emma Frost handles close-quarters brawling, Doctor Strange provides defensive utility, and Hela plus Elsa Bloodstone give you poke and sustained damage from range.

The Dive comp excels at punishing stationary defenders and is especially strong at the first and second chokepoints where flanking routes are most accessible. Jubilee and Cloak and Dagger keep the diving heroes alive long enough to create chaos in the backline.

The Anti-Dive comp is the counter pick when the enemy team is running aggressive flankers. Peni Parker's web traps and The Thing's durability make alternate routes much less appealing for divers.

warning
Avoid running two poke-only duelists in the same comp on Thebes. The tight corridors at the first and third chokepoints heavily punish teams without a close-range threat.

How do you win consistently on the Thebes map?

Beyond hero picks, there are five habits that separate consistent winners from teams that stall out:

  • Use flank routes actively. Thebes has more alternate paths than it initially appears. Flankers like Venom, Black Panther, and Psylocke should never spend the full match on the main lane. Constant backline pressure forces defenders to split their attention and creates openings for the frontline.
  • Pick brawler tanks at every chokepoint. The Thing, Emma Frost, and Hulk all have the close-range toolkit to break through tight corridors. A poke tank that relies on range becomes almost useless once the map narrows.
  • Control the high ground inside the pyramid. The elevated positions in the second section of the map are some of the most powerful real estate in the game. Teams that ignore them give the enemy free reign to rain down damage.
  • Keep healers off the payload when the fight is elsewhere. Strategists glued to the objective while the team dies 20 meters away accomplish nothing. Read the fight and position accordingly.
  • Switch heroes mid-match. Thebes punishes one-dimensional hero choices harder than most maps. If your current pick is not working at a specific chokepoint, swap. The hero pool suited to this map is wide enough that there is always a better option available.
