The Duke is one of the stranger encounters waiting for you near the end of Queensbury Crypt in Mina the Hollower. This purple ghost is pining for his "fairest love" and needs your help reaching her, but he can only travel so far on his own before retreating to where you first found him. The reward for seeing this through is the Proto Spark, one of the best trinkets in the game. Here's exactly how to do it.
Where do you find the Duke?
The Duke appears as a glowing purple figure toward the end of Queensbury Crypt, the game's first dungeon. He'll ask you to escort him to his love somewhere in the halls. The catch: he has a limited range. Wander too far ahead or take too long, and he drifts back to his starting spot. If that happens, just return to where you first met him and pick him up again.

The Duke in Queensbury Crypt
How do you escort the Duke through the Crypt?
Once you have the Duke in tow, the path requires some careful navigation:
- Travel south from his position, working through the platforms and any enemies in the way.
- Head east across the lowest room in this section.
- Move north from there, taking the east pathway back toward the main hall of Queensbury Crypt.
The enemies here can interrupt the escort if you're not careful, so clear the path as you go rather than rushing ahead.
What's hidden in the main hall?
Once you reach the main hall, scan the room carefully. There's grass and plant growth covering the floor in several spots. Clear all of it. On the left side of the middle area, clearing the overgrowth reveals a statue head, the same type you've been collecting and returning to headless statues throughout the Crypt.
Pick up the statue head before doing anything else.

How does the boss fight trigger?
Carry the statue head north to the headless statue in the main hallway and place it. This triggers the area's boss encounter. The Duke's "fairest love" turns out to be this very statue, which makes a lot more sense once the fight plays out. Survive the encounter and the Duke will be genuinely grateful.

What happens after the boss fight?
With the Duchess defeated, there's one final step. Take the Duke north through the room, picking up the Health Rose along the way. At the end of this path, you'll seal the Duke into his own crypt so he can rest alongside his love permanently. He thanks you and hands over the Proto Spark trinket as a reward.

Proto Spark: one free death save
Is the Proto Spark worth getting?
Absolutely. The Proto Spark gives you one free save from death, making it one of the most useful trinkets available this early in the game. Given that Mina the Hollower doesn't always telegraph danger clearly, having a death buffer while you're still learning enemy patterns is genuinely valuable.
Sealing the Duke away is optional in the strictest sense, but there's no reason to skip it. The Proto Spark alone justifies the extra few minutes.
Getting the most out of Queensbury Crypt
The Duke quest is a good example of how Mina the Hollower hides its best rewards behind optional steps that the game never explicitly marks. If you're new to the game, the Mina the Hollower beginner's guide covers the broader survival fundamentals, from managing bones to trinket priorities, that will help you push through the rest of Tenebrous Isle after clearing this dungeon.
